I've come to the conclusion that the familial atmosphere and structure surrounding the band contributed mightily to Keith surviving his excesses. He had a lot of people watching out for him. Many of his peers weren't so fortunate.

good point, and yes agreed. Then again.....Keith's sources for drugs were top notch and he only had the best, except for a few dog shit batches when he was desperate. But yes, he had folks around him that cared.

Yes MB, you do get it. cool. However, as the melodic playing of Taylor were lost, they still brought on brilliance in their new sounds. Side 2 of Tattoo You is just like no other, even songs on Emotional Rescue. Post 82', they have a real change in their sound that we all hear, and it did not fair with many fans.

But, I can see where others may not. - *'Dirty Work':* It _'is-what-it-is'._ - *'Steel Wheels':* Good album. A few great songs. But, (most importantly) a _'re-birth moment'_ that assured fans they weren't DEAD YET! - *'Voodoo Lounge':* (see below) - *'Bridges To Babylon':* Good album. A few great songs. I personally dug it. But, I can see where others may not. - *'A Bigger Bang':* Good album. A few great songs. - *'Blue & Lonesome':* As _'rock-star-Blues-homage'_ albums go. (think Johnny Winter/Canned Heat/ Aerosmith), this one's right up there. After all; They WERE part of the original (British) _'blues-boy'_ scene. So, guzzle a beer/crack another/hit the doobie/light a candle & (re)listen to 'Voodoo Lounge' in reverse order. - Skip the last (#15) song. - Start w/#14 (a _'Keef-song'_ ). - and move your way up. *You won't regret it!* Peace. @@jellobiafra2810 nice breakdown Dave. From what I can remember, hearing STONES albums for the first times...it always took many listens to get into it and absorb. I believe from Steels Wheels on, many folks have NOT given deep deep listens. I am included. My issue is the Lyrics are very lame and Mick is trying to hard on some songs. The research you do is top level ... Wayne said in a Guitar Player magazine article in the 70s ('77??), that it was Keith who wanted to stay all English. I'm sure you could find it with your level of research acumen. This was a great album. Ive come to like more over the years. But if you grew up with the Stones, it was a real diversion from what you came to expect. Memory Motel is a great tune and I remember listening to it over and over on an 8-track on the way back from the Jersey shore, lamenting a girl I met on our last night there. I can still conjure up that feeling 46 years later, that is a testament to how great a song that is. That said, I offer up this unpleasant opinion: Unpopular take ~ Leave now if you do not want to be offended!! Ron Wood was the wrong person to choose. It seemed Mick Taylor inspired Keith to aspire higher. When Ron Wood came, I feel he knew he reached the highest he could ever go, and had no impetus to play like he did with the Faces. He lost his drive. He did not play with the intensity of the Faces, and became a cartoon character of Keith. Both of them relished in the new lowered standards and the music suffered. There are clips of Ronnie staggering around on stage, so drunk, he can barely stand up. I feel they went from musicians who did drugs, to druggies who did music. They never got the intensity or musicianship of the Taylor era, back. Maybe they just ran out of material, who knows, but the new era Stones was a very different entity than the previous one. I saw them a few times in the 70s, and I feel '78 tour was shutting the door on that era. This is the new Stones. Despite that, they will always be my absolute go-to band for any occasion. We'll never see this again.
@FlipSideCT
@FlipSideCT 2 года назад
thanks for commenting LW. I did mention that about 'staying english', and is something Keith would say. A great album for sure, and why I had to push it more as there are so many claimed Stones fan that do not get it. They gave us great memories and we can recall places and smells when we heard the songs over and over again. Everyone has there points on the Stones.....but, I will say there is nothing I dislike. The era's are surely different and the 3 guitarists of Brian/Mick/Ron had their contributions in so many ways. We surely hear the sounds change and drift into different directions. I prefer to listen mostly to post 68' , still listen to any. No problem with your opinions or feelings, as long as we all can say "the greatest rock and roll band ever" we are all in sync. cheers

@L.W. Mason I'm from Detroit (blow the reveille)! What do you call the _'Mick Taylor era'?_ The Stones made many R&R and Pop tunes from '64-'67. For the next two years ('68-'69): *They took over the world!* There was practically no Mick Taylor (or Brian Jones) during that period. 'Beggar's Banquet', 'Let It Bleed', & 'TTPD' (more than just a 'greatest hits'). This is what I call: *The Keith Richard Era!* (& Jagger, of course!) *Post-Mick Taylor:* Great songs (Healthy assist: Ron Wood): -'It's Only Rock & Roll'(co write/guitar erased) - 'Hot Stuff' -'Hey Negrita' -'El Macambo '77' set (from 'Love You Live') -'Miss You' -'Beast Of Burden' -'Shattered' -'She's So Cold' -'Start Me Up' -'Heaven' -'Undercover Of The Night' -'She Was Hot' -'Too Much Blood' -'Pretty Beat Up' -'One Hit (To The Body)' -'Mixed Emotions' -'Love Is Strong' -'Flip The Switch' -'Rough Justice' Not sure if I could live w/o these songs. *Wouldn't wanna try!* Peace. Stay Healthy! - Dave B.

Elton was in CO to record at Caribou Ranch Studio high in the Rockies, and you could tell Keith was annoyed when he came onstage. The Stones played great! We were loving Ian Stewart's playing - because he played all the old parts we were familiar with, and we loved Billy Preston because his stage presence and playing are so magnetic... but Elton's playing style was just wrong - trying to show-off, he didn't fit in the groove. We were excited when Metamorphosis and Made in the Shade hit, and just loving every second of It's Only Rock and Roll and later Black and Blue when it came out.

VERY COOL Paul.....love it! thanks for sharing. I have PT3 in the making, and Fort Collins is a feature in it. I found some info of someone who taped Mick and Elton talking on the phone prior and wrote the dialog out (not the actual recording). I heard he went all the way to Midnight Rambler.....he did get off for Billy and Ian, but came back on.......I need to hear the boot...Elton did mention and gave the excuse in his memoirs he was coked out. But he asked to join them, they did not ask him. I can remember B&B coming out, that is when I just started my RnR groove. ...76' cheers

For anybody obsessed with rock n' roll this really is 1st class content. Imagine being Ron Wood and having to tackle the Stones back catalogue. Hello Steve; An outstanding continuation of the Black & Blue documentary. Pieced together in chronological order explaining in the best way possible how the events unfolded. Telling the story with a revolving door of personal, until the desired group was chosen & unleashed on a receptive audience. The documentary as presented tells the tale of exactly how this tour came to be. The interloping stories of each band member, their wives, girlfriends & acquaintances along for the ride. The focus on Ronnie from his starting point in the band continuing right thru the tour is well explained. The building, lighting, overall costs of the stage, & moving it from venue to venue. There is no way to fully realize the amount of time it takes to properly document this entire process, a true labor of love. As before, well done. On to part 3, all the best. Tina & Pat!~

It's _'even-money'_ The Stones are watching *YOU* at this point. *"Don't drop the ball!"* _LoL~°_ *1975:* Saw them twice (Clev. & Det.) At Cleveland Stadium; Me & John were bringing in a cooler with 2 cases of beer. My plan was to bribe security with $5. It didn't work ( _shoulda used a $20_ ). While they're removing our beer; John asked if we could sell it to the folks outside the fence. Security said: "Yeah, go ahead." _(it was a lotta beer!)._ While doing the deal, I noticed security wasn't watching us anymore. So, we *'likety-split'* with about 1 1/2 cases *still left!* Remember: This was in the _'No-Alcohol-Sold'_ days. We enjoyed a very hot afternoon as the only ones among 80k+ who had beer! (When we were walking around) People would offer us a dollar for _"..whatever's left in the can."_ "No way, man!" We DID share with our neighbors though. Then, The J. Geils Band did their set, which was met with apathy from the crowd. 😥 Us ( _Dee-troiter's_ ) felt personally insulted! "Ok, Ok. This is a Stones crowd." (we said). Hello Steve. I discovered your incredible work yesterday and listened to the making of Black and Blue, Part 1. I am now half-way through Part 2. I just had to stop to say how extraordinary these documentaries are. Hell, I love the Stones so that is a give but the insight you provide here just puts everything on another level. I particularly have enjoyed listening to how the Stone replaced the awesome Mick Taylor with the amazing Ronnie Wood, via a who's who of superb guitar players. Have just watched the part about Freddie Sessler and Keith and Ronnie catching up whilst they were out on Long Island. I know it's naughty but my God, I would not of minded coming along on that trip hee, hee. I just want to thank you for the effort put into this work - it has given me a hellava lot of pleasure listening to all this. I cannot wait to to hear your take on 'Let it Bleed' and 'Goats Head Soup' etc. Thanks again for the effort put in here. I shall pass on your link to those I know who will appreciate such work. Tim.

Easily THE BEST, without question, THE BEST in depth Rolling Stones documentaries ever! Only problem I'm having watching and listening is I'm so "into it" that I've pulled out one of my Fender Telecasters, tuned to 'open G' and playing 'Hand of Fate' while trying to not miss a second of this doc. WELL DONE.

@@FlipSideCT Lol, don’t interrupt me, I’m still tryna finish watching it while playing along on my guitar:) What’s crazy is.., I’m 52, I’ve been obsessed with, researching, collecting and archiving The Stones (as well as The Who, Beach Boys..., Sabbath..., ) researching these bands since I was 9-10 years old.?? I now consider myself an expert (The Who first, Stones 2nd...).., where I can recite from memory facts, dates and histories of these bands better than I can recall events from my own life. You’re documentary series(s) on The Stones are the first I’ve watched in 10-20? years that have so much “new” to offer as far as marrying period correct vintage footage (I thought I’d seen it all) with factually correct “deep” info as opposed to the ‘gloss and hype’ docs that are all the rage. You’re editing is superb, you’re narrative approach is calming and engaging, allowing the story to breathe as well as allowing the viewer to ‘mentally’ participate instead of feeling as if he’s being lectured..., you’re sound levels are spot on as well. I would do something like this for The Who if I had your skills..., sadly you’ve set the bar too high. Can’t imagine the time, work and effort involved. Short version is I’ve seen every commercially available and homemade doc on this band since I was a little boy..., and you’re producing award winners for fans like me that just NEED TO KNOW things like..., ‘Oh.., OK so Keef used Mcawber on 5th ave in 1975.., whew’ . Thanks

@@michaelr4063 @Michael R lol.....nice comments and sharing! so you are RnR geeky, and love to turn folks on to music and info, and so tired of the crap that people have put out there. Sounds like me....yup. Know it! I would love to see a Who version like this. that would be great. I have thought of doing a live class on how to approach and make these docs. the main ingredient is getting a timeline down of the events, and "a fan" is the one to do it. I am not fortunate of a good memory.....but like you said, some of the facts just sticks. Like I can ridiculously remember where I bought my vinyl records. cheers, oh, yea, I was shocked Keith brought out Macawber in the rainy weather.

In regards to "depth"... I experienced something once which you may find interesting. I was in a band in the 80's, touring smaller venues and some festivals in the UK and Europe. In a few major cities we were well promoted and known by larger bands. (Bill Wyman didn't get in at our sold out Marquee show.) Anyhow, when in Paris I knew a girl who knew Keith Richards. We went to his condo to invite him to the Paris show. We were told he wasn't there and was working at a studio in Paris. Later so we t to the studio. If only to get a glimpse as a fan. While standing with many fans, i noticed Mick J. Exiting a taxi and trying to sneak by the crowd gathered outside. While watching him I noticed Ian Stewart standing not far away. I decide to go over and ask him for an autograph. He looked at me asked about my band, and said." You are a bit old for this sort of thing aren't ya?". Haha I was 23, that one statement changed my life and I realized he was saying Ito me you are in this business, and to not believe the smoke and mirrors. I felt I was lucky to get such a lesson from a guy who obviously mentored the Stones themselves. Anyway. Just thought you might get a laugh out of the story. Keep up the good work!!

Superbly well done. Wonderfully paced. The narration is refreshing--no "quirky" verbal posturing drawing attention to itself, but rather a laid back conversational tone. I know a fair amount about The Stones, but many details in Parts 1 & 2 were new to me, along with lots of archival photos I'd never seen before. This documentary is a great pleasure indeed. Looking forward to Part 3. CHEERS

Hey mate, I've now watched twice, great job! I've seen very short clips of the flatbed truck day over the years but this was so much more, and I was thinking as I was watching it, wow, this really was the Stones "Beatles on the roof" moment...and then realising, who is there but none other than Billy Preston! Again! What a guy. Great anecdotes from recording out in Long Island, never knew any of this. And you put into words so very well "the power" of the Stones and just why we love them so much. Really well done. Looking forward very much to #3
