The MAM Journals -Suzuki 800 RE - A Universal Japanese Adventure (UJA) bike of today?

The Suzuki 800 Road Explorer is the latest bike from Suzuki with the new 776cc Parallel Twin . I go through the specifications of the bike , go for a ride and then come to some conclusions. I also reflect on the price of bikes today . Are they really more expensive than they were "back in the day" or is it just that everything else has gone up?
Many years ago we referred to Japanese four cylinders , in a cradle frame as UJM , Universal Japanese Motorbikes . Good value, reliable and capable . Are these new generation of adventure bikes , the UJA , "Universal Japanese Adventure" bikes of our time ?

Thank you, Michael, for another well thought out and researched motorcycle review. I believe this Suzuki is very good value for money, and I would personally consider owning one were it not for the issue of my currently owning one or two bikes too many. Suzuki’s always, for me at least, were not that well finished but offered a great engineering package. Having inspected the RE 800 up close, I have to say it does look well made and robustly finished. I think you were spot on with your ‘universal Japanese adventure’ bike’s comment. Currently this Suzuki fits in to the slot beautifully and at a very fair price.

Thanks - I enjoyed the content and the presentation. I like simple 'no nonsense' bikes and ride a Honda CB500X, which is a great all rounder but lacks a little power on motorway jaunts. Not rode this new Strom, but i have test rode the GSX-8S and its a great engine. But i'm not taken with the looks of this new Strom and wouldn't trade my Strom 650 for it. My 650 is super comfortable, with a well proven reliable and characterful v twin engine. It is also super comfortable, does everything i need a bike to do and gets between 64 and 70 mpg depending on how i ride it.

I noticed you skirted neatly around German and European bikes in the 'value for money' section. Many years ago at work we did a test of how many hours you had to work to buy something, with the older guys saying what they used to earn and what they earned now, and what things used to cost and what they cost now... It seems most things were actually a lot more expensive years ago and not such good quality.
@michaelmam
@michaelmam 2 месяца назад
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Chris . I didn’t deliberately skirt round the German and European prices , just reflected briefly on my personal experience when I bought my new Z650 in the early 80’s . I remember considering bikes that included the Ducati Desmo and concluding I couldn’t afford it and that the Moto Morini 3.5, which I could afford was slower than the bike I already had . I also concluded that BMW stood for Beyond My Wealth … I suspect your research was right ..👍

It looks a bit like a Suzuki bandit, from back in the day. The older i get, the fewer people i have to impress, so an adventure type bike may not be the most beautiful, but it certainly gets the work done. On the valve of the bike, i see moto morini x cape available new for about £5800 i think, if memory serves me, and its one of the better looking adventurous type bikes.

Hello Michael, I recently stumbled across you channel searching for videos on the new Suzuki V-Strom 800 RE. I hat the opportunity to try out the DE version last year and I really liked it. But when the RE version came out, I decided to order that version as I don't ride off-road. And the journalists at the test launch in France said that the RE has a comfy suspension as well. As you have the direct comparison with the DE version, my question to you is: is the RE suspension-wise similarly comfortable as the DE? I'm thinking here especially of you "bumpy road test" :) And I'd like to tell you, that I really like you channel (I've been watching a lot of you recent and past videos since I discovered this one). You look like a very sympathetic guy to me. BTW: my bike is due to arrive till mid February. Keeping fingers crossed :) Greetings from Hungary! :)

I quite liked the rideability and character of the 650, but with the difference in MSRP being only $700 USD here ($9,199 vs $9,899), would you say the 800RE is a better buy than the 650RE? The Higher the number the mode , the more quickly traction control is engaged . Which is what I saying in this video as well ? . @ioandragulescu6063
@ioandragulescu6063 6 месяцев назад
@@michaelmam hmm, so all this time I misunderstood how the TC indicator works. I thought that when the TC indicator blinks it means the wheel is slipping and THEN TC intervenes, so more blinking would mean more slipping thus when you were saying in the video that it blinks like a Christmas tree, for me it ment LESS intervention :) But reading carefully what you said and the manual I got it now. The TC blinks when the system intervenes to prevent slipping and thus loss of tractions so obviously, a higher TC level will lead to more blinking because the system intervenes more (not that the wheel is slipping more). At least I was using it correctly and not riding with an improper setting of the TC for the road conditions... that would have been bad. Tnx for making me understand properly how it works :)

Dunlop makes a tier lower tire generally, they are typically a notch below Michelin, Bridgestone and Pirelli as an example. Almost universally when reviewers comment on a tire being bad, it's a Dunlop
@michaelmam
@michaelmam 5 месяцев назад
Certainly the OE fitted tyres are not universally popular . I have no doubt Dunlop can make excellent tyres . Personally I am not convinced RE and Suzuki are playing in the same space but respect your opinion . I know a few who have both brands , including me, but I think they are quite distinct brand characters . I actually think the new 450 Himalayan might ruffle a few of the smaller middleweights but will wait to ride one before coming to any conclusions . For me , appearance , the subjective beautiful or ugly, is separate from character . I don’t like the “modular” lines of adventure styled bikes generally but they are a lot more fun to ride than to look at . 👍 We are all different , and that is fine . To me.. this bike makes NO sense at all.. suzuki has hopped on the Fad Wagon with parrallel twins & their "P Strom".. the V Twin 1000/1050 & 650 are a much better engine.. with a tiny bit of effort they could have easily got the Vs down to a 200kg mark.. same can be said for Yamaha not reviving the tdm900.. THAT bike could be trimmed to an amasing 170kg.. that.. would be a big seller then.. 🙏🇳🇿🇳🇿nz

Personally I think , certainly in the showrooms here in the UK , the big VStrom was running out of steam . The 650 is a good bike , I have an XT , but they needed a bit more power to stay competitive and clearly decided to go again with a new twin . I like both engines . I was a bit surprised that they didn’t go for more power at launch but we will see how it evolves .. and how the sales go .

@@michaelmam I haven't seen one in the flesh let alone ride one, and nor will I. This is the usual great review but these don't interest me in the slightest for the aforementioned reasons. The only twin I've ever owned with the dozens of bikes I've had over the decades was a Yamaha RD400 back in the 80's, which in contrast to it's modern four stroke twin brethren had character, zest and charisma in spades. IMO anyway. And the only twin I ever sort of hankered after was a Yamaha TX750, but they were rare here in NZ. As mentioned I'd buy a V Twin any day, except for a Ducati but the latest parallel twins, yawn.
