Henry Cavill ("Man of Steel") stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer ("The Social Network") as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series. Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo's only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe. "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" also stars Alicia Vikander ("Anna Karenina"), Elizabeth Debicki ("The Great Gatsby"), with Jared Harris ("Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows"), and Hugh Grant as Waverly. The screenplay was written by Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, who previously collaborated on re-imagining the classic detective Sherlock Holmes in two hit films. The story is by Jeff Kleeman & David Campbell Wilson and Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, based on the television series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." John Davis ("Chronicle"), Steve Clark-Hall ("RocknRolla," the "Sherlock Holmes" films), Wigram and Ritchie produced the film, with David Dobkin serving as executive producer. Ritchie's behind-the-scenes creative team included two-time Oscar (R)-nominated director of photography John Mathieson ("The Phantom of the Opera," "Gladiator"), production designer Oliver Scholl ("Jumper," "Edge of Tomorrow"), editor James Herbert (the "Sherlock Holmes" films, "Edge of Tomorrow"), and Oscar (R)-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston ("Lincoln"). The music is composed by Daniel Pemberton ("The Counselor").(c) Warner Bros

I'm a little worried that movies like this and Impossible Mission are being given something of a free pass by the WTF team these days. There seems to be this small admission that the movie makes no sense/has plot holes and this is glossed over. A movie should never be excused for lazy writing.

+drjameselliott 1 MFU was always a spoof lite in essence good writing because they actually capture the series 2 Mission impossible is worse in that they took a great non violent clever series and turned into wham bam thank you mam

Saw the film, loved it. Mostly agree w/reviewers, except I give it a higher rating. And maybe it says something about my sick sense of humor, but I laughed through the "gruesome" death scene (you'll know it when you see it). And it had a sense of justice to it. I laughed a lot during this film. I totally agree with this "occupying the space between Thunderball and Our Man Flint". It's pure fun. See it in IMAX if possible (and it's IMAX 2D only! Yay!)
@RabbiSteve
@RabbiSteve 9 лет назад
And I add & will admit, for the sake of full disclosure, it's possible that I give it a higher rating because I did grow up in the 60s, and I did watch and love the TV show. And I felt that the feel, the look, the humor, and the energy was completely nailed by the filmmakers for this.

I haven’t either. What’s up with that? Oh right, it depended on where one lived. The affiliates of the three networks choose what after school reruns...which ran all the way to eight o’clock. I am so curious about it however because my brother did see them, and he would attack me as a child and make me say uncle. Which he stopped only because of my size. A ten, twelve year old boy can get pretty rough with a one -three year old.

And I think the best instance of homoerotic subtext in the film was the Italian love song playing in the background while Napoleon decided to save Illya's life.

The tone was off. idk what they're talking about. it wanted to be Kingsman for 75 percent of the time with the humor and stylized lightheatedness, but then near the ending, final battle, it wanted to be serious and dire

I'm surprised they didn't make a Gilligan's Island movie during the '90s when it seemed like they were making movies out of almost every old show. Hopefully they never will.

I'm sorry but the idiots that don't understand what Cavill was trying to go for as presented in the trailers alone do not get the point of this film! Its a 60s spy spoof based on a tv show about a perfectly dressed, debonair, alpha male agent teaming up with his Russian male counterpart! The two leads in my opinion dont sound boring at all. They sound like their fitting the writers idea of what the characters are supposed to be perfectly! Plus, Alicia Vakander is an extreme talent! This sounds like a fun movie! One of the rare better remakes actually! If it wasn't for all these people who made all these stupid Straight Outta memes without being compensated by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, real geniuses, the movie would have done alot better at the box office, its a shame!

I'm not really sure about this film. I'm hearing that the small car chase scene shown in the trailers is the big action piece of this movie. And from the trailer, it's boring. Like a lazy Bourne action piece. Jokes about fashion...not my interest I guess. Also, instead of making this a Man from UNCLE origin story - they could have just called it the Spy Movie. I'm a fan of the first season of TMFU and there's nothing really here to connect with. One only real tie-in to the series are the character names. The idea of the agency (as listed in the title) doesn't come until the end of the movie. (Not much of a spoiler since this is already well known.) And that amazes me because having the agency already established would have created a ton of humor, since humor seems to be the big selling point everyone is making. The whole thing just seems dull and all the reviews I've read or listened to just aren't convincing enough to inspire wanting to see it. Maybe some weeks down the line when I can pay $2.00 for it and have nothing else to do, I may see it. For now.....I guess I'll pass. Too bad since I was interested originally.

"Henry cavill sounded like he was reading the news the whole time" I heard that on another review and I agree. This film was okay. The chemistry was meh and the pacing seemed weird. a lot of exposition and uneccessary flashbacks. The stylized tone saved it. 6.5/10
