“I don't want to know what happened in the past. All I want to know is who are my commanders, where are the Chinese, how much ammunition have I got...”
The life and career of Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw was as illustrious as his name. Back in 2002, interviewed by his own grandson for a documentary, this is how he recounted his days of glory.
Thanks to Parzor Foundation for the footage.

We were at Coimbatore airport and Sir Manekshaw was coming inside. My husband went to wish him. Sir Manekshaw bent from his great height and shook hands with my 2 young daughters and when I folded my hands to do Namasthe, Sir Manekshaw said”No young lady “ and shook hands with me too . A gentleman to the core and it was a great honour for us . Greatest Indian.

I think you are lucky to have lived in Navsari. I visited Navsari about 10 years ago. Quite an interesting little town and saw few Parsi families. I visited a local library where a librarian actually showed me a very old book Zoroastrian history and religion and was written in old Persian script. I was actually quite disappointed by the way the librarian treated the book. I wish Indians take more care in preserving various aspects of history and artefacts in public places. But funnily enough the librarian treated me like I was a foreigner but in a good way the moment I told her I was Tamil Nadu. I think it’s a bit sad to see Parsi community dwindling and disappearing from the face of India!
