This is great. Bowie's soundtrack would have given the movie so much more otherworldliness--the one they used is so abrupt and wrong in so many places and I feel it undermines the film. It takes you out of the movie. Bowie's work would have underscored the character and the feel. I so want someone to just score the film with his instrumentals from Low and whatever else survives from his work on the soundtrack. Love this, hope you do more scenes!

Absolutely stunning. I had long thought tracks from Station to Station and Low perfectly fitted the film. This is a wonderful realisation and amply demonstrates a Bowie soundtrack would have lifted this brilliant and troubling film to even higher levels of genius. Thanks for the work you put in on this. I just heard an interview with Bowie--and that is what he said--the soundtrack he wrote for this film was turned into Station to Station, but mostly Low.
Mr.Sussex, first of all a mighty and heartfelt thank you for all of the hard (and unpaid)work that you've done here. I thoroughly enjoyed viewing my beloved tmwfte opening scenes meshed with my even more beloved David Bowie composition. What a joy! And it works! So, then I officially cast my vote for you to carry on with this 'experiment'. I await the next installment. Really. Seriously, do consider making more. It is appreciated probably more than you realize.

Works well and shows how the film could have had a more meditative, otherworldly quality had they gone with DB (assuming that the lost soundtrack is similar to side two of Low) - great job! I hope they release Bowie's soundtrack demos, it's the unreleased thing of his I most want to hear.
Would really love to match up the entire film with Bowie's soundtrack. Had forgotten how distracting the accepted soundtrack was to the film. Cut out a few scenes with the professor and add this soundtrack and it would be a masterpiece.
You may have discovered something very interesting. When the initial melody takes a minor key phrase, it coincides with the first appearance of the shadowy government figure on top of the hill. Coincidence or more telling about the composition of this piece? Well done.

I always imagined Speed of Life suddenly crashing in as that car goes sailing by Thomas Jerome Newton. Thank you for doing this. I've felt for some time that this film would be great to refurbish using Bowie's Low LP. This opening scene is great work.

The question remains Bowie after been influenced by the Electronic music coming out of Germany in the 70's Cluster , Harmonia , Kraftwerk , Neu , and so forth . It is well known that Bowie wrote and worked on a full sound track for this film. But after the producers decided to use a more conventional sound track , so of these idea later turned up on Low , along with Eno's input. Many have said the sound track still exists in Bowie's archive , that would be nice but , it is also good to remember Bowie was in a bad place when this film was made , heavy Drug addiction. Before the move to Berlin. I would love to see a re-edited version of this film using what ever recoverd tracks they could find , with the families permission that his . Thanks for the video.

That's way better than the original soundtrack! I wish it would come out later, that Bowie had created the whole soundtrack for this movie and they would release it!
Just an observation: I never noticed this before, but when you first see David walking down the hill, he’s wearing these interesting looking white shoes. In all the other shots, which I’ve always assumed were meant to be on the same day, he’s wearing black shoes. I wonder if that’s a continuity error or if it’s intentional for some reason?

This is good. Unfortunately, the original "Poker Dice" actually used as the intro soundtrack in the film was one of the only perfect and appropriately well chosen pieces of music in the movie. I also really liked the electro funk piece of music with the Vocoder used - I think, - over the scene when Newton gets to the city (NYC?). This "electro funk" piece is not on the new soundtrack release and I can find no clue as to the identity of the piece! Neither is it listed in the music credits at the end of my copy of the film. Does anybody know who this is and what it's title is? I'm sure it isn't, but it does sound like something Bowie would have done in that era.
Heyo, I believe the piece used is Weeping Wall from the album Low. Supposedly the B-side to Low was meant for this movie but the director disliked it. Real shame in my opinion, the soundtrack for this film was pretty 'meh' overall; just bizarre country music. I'm guessing you're not Bowie fan but a Film fan, would I be correct in saying that?
Oscar Smith Hi, no, I'm a Bowie fan primarily (although I do like film). The actual musical backing on "The Man Who Fell To Earth" over the opening titles is a piece called "Poker Dice" by Stomu Yomashta. It is this music that has been replaced here with the Bowie track. My point was that, even though the Bowie track works well here, the Yomashta piece, in my opinion was already perfect over the opening titles. I agree, that, the majority of the rest of the soundtrack is poor, particularly when divorced from the film itself but I do like the "mutated" funky "Vocoder" piece that is used in the film (I think at the point when Newton first takes his patents to Farnsworth in New York?) and it is this piece that I can't identify or find any reference as to who the artist was / is.

Oscar Smith Thanks man. I took a look at the IMDB soundtrack listed for the film as you suggested. Whilst it is a very detailed list, the piece of music I'm talking about isn't listed there either... so, in this respect, is just like other sources I've looked through in my time. The track remains a mystery! (The only two tracks it possibly could still be are both by John Phillips: "Devil's on the Loose" or "Black Broadway". I say this as, all the other soundtrack pieces listed on the IMDB run down are on RU-vid and, upon examination aren't the number I'm looking for. These two John Phillips numbers whilst they are on RU-vid are listed as "Not Available" when you try to play them so I haven't been able to check these two. However, given the style of the rest of the numbers Phillips contributed to the soundtrack I would be massively surprised if the piece I'm talking about turned out to be one of these two tracks). As I say, I've been trying to track down this piece of music for years but I can't find anything to do with it. It isn't listed in the end credits of the film and it isn't listed as being on the soundtrack album release (only being released this year for the first time as you will know) on Amazon; nor can I find reference to it in other articles or previous listings. It's baffling. I very much doubt it is by him, given all we know of the history of Bowie's attempts at producing his own music for the purpose of being the soundtrack, but it does, to my ears, sound very distinctly "Bowieish" in style; much more so than anything other in the soundtrack and I could easily imagine Bowie producing such a piece of music in that era. Thanks for trying though.
Solved!! I've just watched "The Soundtrack" featurette on the new "Man Who Fell To Earth" blue ray (just issued this month). The piece I've been looking for is used in the film as "Bryce's theme" (and not to introduce the Farnsworth scene as I'd stated in the posts above). And it turns out it IS a John Phillips' piece! (and one of the two Phillips numbers I noted as "unlikely" possibles in my post above): It's "Devil's On The Loose" but (if I've understood the featurette commentary correctly) reworked for the film as an instrumental and using a Vocoder. The Crusaders are the backing band on this (as well as on the original John Phillips vocal version). All of this only helps me so much however as the number still isn't included on the newly issued soundtrack album!!!! I can't understand why not however as A: John Phillips was the main composer for the film, B: other re-workings by Phillips are included on the soundtrack album, C: music used in the film by artists other than Phillips are included on the soundtrack release (so we can't blame the fact that The Crusaders played on the track with Phillips) and, finally, D: Other than the Stomu Yamashta music used in the film ( and also included on the new soundtrack release), this version of "Devil's On The Loose" is the only decent music on the soundtrack! (Alright, so this last point is subjective..... but I'm sticking to it!). On Amazon I can't find the film version of the track under The Crusaders name, nor on RU-vid. The original version of the piece is on Amazon (with vocals and sans Vocoder) under John Phillips name. Neither the original John Phillips "vocal" version nor the soundtrack instrumental Vocoder version is on RU-vid (although, as I stated in a post above this, it appears as if the "original" John Phillips vocal version has been posted on RU-vid at some point but is blocked from being able to play!). So.... the mystery is finally solved but, it appears, there is still no way to hear the soundtrack, instrumental / Vocoder version of the piece other than in the snippet used in the film itself. What a shame. ( The new blue ray release of the film does come with a soundtrack cd [which only compiles the John Phillips material from the film and, therefore, excludes the music used in the film by artists other than Phillips]. This version of the soundtrack states it includes some extra /outtake material from Phillips's contributions to the soundtrack not included on other releases of the soundtrack currently being issued. One of these "out takes" is entitled "Bryce". Confusingly, - and, frustratingly, - however, "Bryce" isn't the piece I'm talking about here and is something other entirely. This is odd given that, as noted above, the soundtrack featurette refers to the Vocoder version of "Devil's On The Loose" as being "Bryce's theme".).
You know i agree that david bowie was very attractive 🌝🤚🏼in this film Adorkable in fact 😍 (because of my interest of him i decided to watch his films...so far labyrinth is my top favs ) ...i was excited to see this film for many reasons: 1). My top favorite genre is fantasy/sci-fi (psychological thriller, horror, adventure, and romance) since this was a sci-fi film it caught my interest 2). David bowie starred in this and this is one of his early films 😍(i loved him since the labyrinth) I wanted to learn more about him and i know this film would be a inspiration to him the most because he is a unique beautiful creature (if it was any creature ill describe him it’ll be an serpent, unicorn, martian, fae, and a phoenix )because of the different personas express through his style in music, his sexuality, his charm, and fashion etc And i love how he expresses his unique quality It makes him extraordinary from the rest At first i watch some scenes on youtube to get quick review and it loook like it was filmed by a amateur but it was funny but also ...confusing ...and odd but i like to watch things thats different and i understand this film was made in a different decade from mines(early 21st century girl💁🏽♀️) But usually i don’t watch mist films that was made in the 70s ... because how its too monotonous and outdated No offense 🤚🏼🌝🤚🏼 Im more interest in 80s retro Most of scenes were risqué, the beginning was pretty...disturbing... The relationship between the professor and his students...and the dialogue... When the students was talking about the comparison of their ....🤦🏽♀️father 🙁 Those scenes were cringe...very Then other scenes when the drunk alien and his side chick human was engage into adultery ..🌝well it was like watching homemade VHS porno cast by two ppl on drugs(kinda reminds me of them “WTF i just watch” videos) i didnt know whether to feel disturbed in revelation or slightly amused of the comical obscenity 😳🥴 it was like watching nymphomaniac part 1 and 2 (Only that movie actually made more sense and its more indecent and deep..😣*shivers* ) But ....the film is two hours long and it not adequately detailed.. Everything seem to be cut short and brief Not adequate information or purpose on the characters Like everything is briefly summarized but not deeply establish,acknowledge, or simply explained For example, when the professor was screwing around with the students besides of him getting fired what about seeing the consequences to other characters reactions (like his family, or the students family or his boss, etc) Another example when Sussex/tommy talked about his wife.. i kinda wanted to know more about his life or family And how he get into a deeper relationship with mary lou(ew cringe😰😤) It went from his talking to her in the elevator to her over staying and having drink with him... And ironing his clothes And eventually already saying she likes him ....even tho he has a wife🌝... It all this happen for a short time ..they barely talked or really got to know each other 🤦🏽♀️... everything just seemed rushed with barely adequate details but overall the film, 1-10 issssss a 4.5 or ig a 5. (For david bowie and how funny it was 🌝🤷🏽♀️) Like i said I’d watch strange, cringy, indecent, and odd films before but from i have my limits🌝🤚🏼 there are movies you can be shock and disturbed but can still watch at till the end (But not always a selective choice) Like this movie🌝👆🏼 But there are also movies where it goes over your limits Such as: nymphomaniac and other i regret seeing🤦🏽♀️ 1-10 (too far to the limit of not watching ) Is a 6.5 or 7 🙃😶🤔
