I live in Great Falls MT and we here stories about this growing up. There’s actually enough mineshafts under Butte that it can circle the earth. The whole town is held up by water flooding the shafts. A lot of people have been hospitalized from drinking the water. My sixth grade teacher was born in butte and said he saw it dissolve a barn. It was being carried by a truck.
@@johndc2998 the barn was getting transported to the owners new property, when the truck got in a crash and what remained of the barn rolled downhill into the pit. It floated for about 3 minutes, then the wood started degrading and bubbling.
I wouldn't have my faith restored in humanity so fast considering humans were the people to begin with that polluted the surrounding groundwater. The jurisdiction in charge should cover it up considering it's a danger to any living thing.
I watched a video about this like a year ago and I'm glad this is getting more notoriety. This water is right in the migration path of a ton of birds so this job saves countless birds per year.
The fact that humans caused this in the first place makes it go back down to negative for me. At least we’re kind of helping but at the same time no ones gonna sit and stare at a lake 24/7 to watch for birds yknow? And imagine how many non-bird organisms are also dying off bc of the copper. Sad. Edit: they have the speakers tho I wonder if they help much or cause more damage overall
@@maddiesmenagerie8853, Slowly let it trickle out across a long ditch, and fill the hole. It shouldn't recollect if they fill the hole it leaves. Screw the ground around it, since it's not worth using, AnyWay.
Tom Scott also covered the pit a few years ago. In addition to scaring away birds, they're also treating the water and discharging clean water from it. If they didn't, the water level would get too high and contaminate the surrounding area.
@@krustycloth no it isn't. Sure Tom made better and longer video about this but the footage isn't stolen from him and covering a wierd place in a video isn't same as stealing
most people are saying how much of a community service this is but when that much birds die its practically saving the ecosystem they still do it out of the kindness of their heart so good work
Imagine waking up without an alarm. That sounds genuinely amazing like a low key super power. I have 4 twin bell alarms and timed lights it my room and I still can't get up in the morning. Update: I bought an electrocuting alarm watch. It works.
Hello! Person from a certain town that I won’t name about 45 minutes away from butte speaking here! You can actually go through a small tunnel to an overlook and the photos don’t do it justice. The pit is about 1.3 miles across ( and about double that deep without from top to bottom not jsut the water) with gorgeous (and deadly) blue and green water. You can hear the blips going off all day. If you weren’t convinced already to visit it’s also full of history and historical buildings. I’d suggest visiting butte with my whole heart
Bury me softly in this womb I give this part of me for you Sand rains down and here I sit Holding rare flowers in a tomb, in bloom Down in a hole And I don't know if I can be saved See my heart, I decorate it like a grave You don't understand who they thought I was supposed to be Look at me now a man Who won't let himself be Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, losin' my soul I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied Down in a hole And they've put all the stones in their place I've eaten the sun so my tongue Has been burned of the taste I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth I will speak no more of my feelings beneath Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, losin' my soul I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied Bury me softly in this womb (oh I wanna be inside of you) I give this part of me for you (oh I wanna be inside of you) Sand rains down and here I sit (oh I wanna be inside of you) Holding rare flowers in a tomb (oh I wanna be inside) Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, losin' my soul Down in a hole, feelin' so small Down in a hole, out of control I'd like to fly But my wings have been so denied
@@devonlockwood1477it is a very beautiful sight and do not forget to visit many of the other historical sites in the area of Uptown Butte such as the art chateau much of the architecture in the area is from the era and you will enjoy taking a step into the past
Another perfect example of why I love this channel, never know what type of story I'm going to hear. Thanks for sharing and have a blessed day everyone
Easier said than done, I'm afraid. As much as I wish the company that did this (ARCO, btw) would pay, I doubt anyone could get enough out of them to actually fix this mess.
All they need to do is get those non-toxic balls, I've seen this, some plant somewhere did not want to lose its water so they covered it with these non-toxic black ballsshooting your gun cuz you can't stop them the water is 22 drawing so cover the water up.
@[ The Glitchenator ] man..... it's a contrast joke not literally. It's removed from the context specifically for the Joke!!! Wait..... do you save bees????
I love birds and I love studying them. Lots of birds are not endangered but because of events like these, they could easily lose a lot of their population. I support what these guys are doing and wish the world could protect not only birds but all wildlife, to protect both creepy and cute creatures, and keep our home Earth safe in sound.
I live an hours drive from Butte, and I've toured the pits and the mines beneath the city before. When you get close enough, you can smell the heavy metals in the air, but it's a pretty cool experience.
Sometimes we actually refilled the pit with water do to because of the structure inside of the minds are getting held up by that water. My dad studied this and he’s been in the middle of it on a boat.
All of these peoples go like "faith in humanity destroyed" My fellow species member, certain people profited off letting a literal lake full of poisoned water form
That's amazing, but there just has to be a better solution. Hopefully something is done to fix this problem one day. In the meantime, these people are doing incredible work.
That's a good measure of how much someone loves their job. I will ask that on an interview some day. If you work for us how many alarms do you set? Or how many times do you hit snooze?
