FILM DESCRIPTION:
Near the end of the Korean War, a platoon of U.S. soldiers is captured by communists and brainwashed. Following the war, the platoon is returned home, and Sergeant Raymond Shaw (Laurence Harvey) is lauded as a hero by the rest of his platoon. However, the platoon commander, Captain Bennett Marco (Frank Sinatra), finds himself plagued by strange nightmares and, together with fellow soldier Allen Melvin (James Edwards), races to uncover a terrible plot.

My God, what a great movie. You've got a Sinatra and Leigh romance and his dogged pursuit of justice. You've got Laurence Harvey bravely playing a broken man, James Gregory as the perfect sap, and in the piece de resistance, Angela Lansbury (against type) as one of the most deliciously evil characters ever played on screen. Bravo to all that made this possible, one of the best films ever made.

Angela Lansbury played several evil women in the 1960s. Besides Manchurian Candidate , she played a weird mother obsessed with her oldest son in All Fall Down , a cold wife in Dear Heart , and another cold wife in a film with Peter Finch and Jane Fonda

It always breaks my heart when Raymond says to Marco "Oh God, Ben" and turns the gun on himself. It makes me cry pretty much all the time. He is truly desperate to get out and thinks the only way is to sacrifice himself. He saved the world...he just couldn't save himself.

Poor Raymond. Poor friendless, friendless Raymond. He was wearing his medal when he died. You should read some of the citations sometime. Just read them. "Taken, eight prisoners, killing four enemy in the process while one leg and one arm was shattered and he could only crawl because the other leg had been blown off - Edwards. Wounded five times, dragged himself across the direct fire of three enemy machine guns to pull two of his wounded men to safety amid sixty-nine dead and two hundred and three casualties - Holderman." Made to commit acts too unspeakable to be cited here by an enemy who had captured his mind and his soul, he freed himself at last and in the end, heroically and unhesitatingly gave his life to save his country. Raymond Shaw... Hell... _Hell._

How ironic that this film was made in the middle of the CIA M K Ultra program which was basically trying achieve the same ends. And many would say they succeeded.

Absolutely correct. The film sort of muddles this up on purpose (Shaw's last words even make you wonder if Shaw somehow broke the spell and decided himself to kill the villains), but the book makes it pretty clear that Ban not only ordered the last-minute change in plans as to who is assassinated, but also that Shaw then kill himself. As I recall, Ben's explanation is "no electric chair for a Medal of Honor man".

I must say that Sinatra's twitch when Raymond shoots himself is brilliant. Perfectly conveys the shock without graphically showing the suicide. Another winner from director John Frankenheimer. Superb cast and screenplay by George Axelrod is compelling.

The assassination scene gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I watch it. Even Marco felt shocked witnessing Raymond’s suicide. Other than that, The Manchurian Candidate is one of my favorite Frank Sinatra films despite the assassination scene.

It never occurred to me that one of the great tragedies in the story is that the true villains (China and the USSR) have basically gotten away with murder. Sure, the conspiracy is ultimately unraveled and they don't get their chosen puppet stooge elected, but Raymond's final act also unwittingly destroyed all the key witnesses. The final loss Marco is faced with is both personal and professional. A small battle won but a larger battle lost. Great film.

I like the two kills. The guy simply slumps and spasms slightly because he's been killed instantly whereas the women seems to have been shot somewhere in the upper torso and instead recoils before dying.

I think it was more a matter of he couldn't live with himself after he'd killed the woman he loved, even though he couldn't help himself -- or perhaps even _because_ he couldn't help himself. Can you imagine the mental trauma? Having your own free will taken away from you and being made to act as someone else's programed robot. It would be the ultimate violation. Thankfully, we know this level of brainwashing is fictional. It makes for a fascinating movie, but thankfully, it's impossible to do this in real life.

It's a great ending to a great film, but although I don't want to be "that guy", they totally changed the ending from that in the book. In the book, it is VERY strongly hinted that Ben (the character played by Sinatra), when he figured out how the hypnosis autosuggestion plan was supposed to work and then "counter-hypnotized" Raymond using the deck of 52 Queens of Hearts, actually programmed Raymond BOTH to kill Mr. and Mrs. Iselin AND then to kill himself. Ben explains this later to his girlfriend by saying : "No electric chair for a Medal of Honor man", i.e., he wanted to spare Raymond the agony of a trial for murder which would have led to his death in any event and also dishonored him in the process. But this is a trivial point: this film was a masterpiece in every way.

What's spooky is how prophetic this movie was. The assassination rifle has a scope, it's bolt-action and it looks almost identical to the Oswald rifle. The distance between assassin and his targets is eerily similar to JFK and at a downward angle from an obscure window. But just as amazing to me is that the Presidential ticket physically resembles Eisenhower/Nixon in 1952 & 1956. James Gregory played "Iselin" to perfection in looking like Nixon from the 40's and 50's. Apparently, the scary similarities between this fictional movie and real life and the JFK assassination led to the powers at be to "pull" the film from distribution not to be publicly seen again until 1988. Wow!

A bolt action and a telescopic sight? I wonder who was watching. Good thing Ben Arthur didn't have a rifle, or Raymond and his mother might have lived to complicate things. (It's not "Police Squad.") Raymond had a Soviet paratrooper's rifle. Imagine those paratroopers going against our infantrymen with their fully automatic M14 rifles. Nikita would have been forced to drop the H-bomb to save face. I also wonder who watched Raymond assembling the rifle, just after he made it to the booth. At least, the rifle was designed to be disassembled and stored in the paratrooper's backpack (no, not a brown paper bag) and reassembled after he touched down, without so much as a dime to help. The novel ends as Ben Marco walks away from the booth. The movie adds Marco's lament for poor Raymond. Both spare us the official investigation, which informed us that Senator Iselin and his wife were both shot from behind. Imagine this happening in a virtual convention. Fortunately, totalitarian rulers love adoring crowds. There's often a joker in the deck.

Antonio Montana it wasn't banned. Sinatra owned the movie. As a friend of JFK, He pulled it from tv and being produced on video until the late 80's.

Meryl Streep in the remake: gawd awful. As with all her portrayals, you can see the wheels turning. ALL THE TIME. An amazingly brilliant TECHNICAL actress, but not a truly natural or soulful one; just technique in the attempt at the latter. Here, her 'characterization' is a joke, one which earns no comparison to Lansbury's absolutely ingenious incarnation of serpentine-matriarchal evil. Streep is so out of her league here. Her performance (vs. a portrayal) is simultaneously laughable and insufferably irritating. A nice and generous lady, to be sure. And, undoubtedly, a wonder for other actors to work with (and loads of fun). But definitely not my idea of a truly great actor -- in and from the soul depths. She's not my cup of tea (understatement). But, hey, others are free to enjoy what they themselves esteem and admire.

Absolutely agree with you about Streep's acting. This is something that I have thought about for years. She is way too self conscious and never totally loses herself in the role. Far better actors out there.
