The Mandoverse has a big Luke Skywalker problem 

I'm in the camp of "remove the sequels from the equation and then we'll talk". I refuse that as being Luke's fate.

I’m in the “I’ve completely given up any hope Disney can make good Star Wars” camp. I just don’t think the toothpaste goes back in the tube.

They could have established some small thing Luke did that allowed for a lasting positive impact on the galaxy. As things stand now, he could have stayed a miserable moisture farmer and things would probably have been mostly the same and Rey would show up to be the *real* hero. Functionally, Luke and the entire OT was basically a speed bump thanks to Disney's shortsightedness.

Since they brought in time travel and teleportation, ERASE THE SEQUELS. 😊

The fact that the end game is the sequel is yeah , I don’t care if they got the greatest writer of all time designing that lore on Luke, he will always end up trying to merk his nephew and hide with green milk

I don't think they should use Luke, as any scenes about him building a new Jedi order just reminds fans how Rian "Your Snoke Theory Sucks" Johnson drove the franchise off a cliff.

They've already hinted it will link in to the sequel trilogy, that's enough for me to give it a hard pass.

If that Mando movie ties in to the disney trilogy, then it's a hard pass. I will go if Luke is the head of a Jedi order with Mara Jade as his wife and Ben his son. Until they move away from the disney trilogy I'm not interested.

Unpopular opinion: I think Star Wars is dead forever. I don’t think what made it popular was the characters of the first or second trilogy, it was this amazing world with grand stakes. Effectively Star Wars was cool unique. They could remove the Disney trilogy, they could try to rework Luke and Han , they could do whatever, but fundamentally they don’t understand the spark of Lucas, which made Star Wars so interesting.

All roads lead to The Last Jedi, so I couldn’t care less about what Luke does post-ROTJ. He’s ruined.

I'm a lot more pessimistic on how well the Mando & Grogu movie is going to do. The title and concept art are generic, and look like they were thrown together by a committee meeting desperate for an easy win. And it's coming on the heels of the weak Mando season 3, which saw declining viewership. Watercooler talk is pretty much dead for this show, as well as the franchise in general, so they're not going to be able to count on a large audience just automatically showing up like in years past. Can't imagine the Filoni movie will do well either, considering the soft response to Ahosoka season 1, and the fact that having MCU-like interconnected stories can backfire spectacularly if there aren't enough fans consuming all the required viewing.

I've been ignoring the sequels for years. Very effective.

I've said it once, I'll say it a million times. TLJ creates an impassable bottleneck by killing Luke. All stories prior, even a great one about Luke, are meaningless because we know how it ends and therefore impossible to get invested in it. They killed Luke mother-effin Skywalker, the OG, the GOAT, the man that represents the values and virtues of a true jedi. Star Wars died when Rian Johnson selfishly decided to be the troll who would kill him off in the worst and most meaningless way possible. They then tried to replace him with Rey "Personality of a Piece of Plywood" Palpatine and told the fans to consume or be called bigoted, and we can see how that's all worked out. Either figure out a way to retcon Luke's death with something like the Veil of the Force while Mark Hamill is still alive, or Star Wars will continue to suck. Disney/KK will never do that so at this point we can just hold out hope for them to sell the IP and another studio to retcon the entire Disney EU and ST.

Unless and until Disney formally apologizes for the way they have handled Star Wars, I'm permanently out. I wish they would just stop making it so we could all just forget about the sequel era.

Truly, what was done in the Sequels was *insane.* Genuinely unhinged. Someone dropped a whole crate, a whole cargo ship of balls. "Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy" would have been a license to print money and a way to mint any number of fresh heroes, as many as they wanted. The High Republic was an effort to get some of that dynamic back, but it was never going to have the draw of a New Jedi Order. That whiteboard of ideas for the High Republic? Those would all have been better in Luke's Academy and a New Republic! Yes, even "dinosaurs". I've never seen a bigger, fatter golden goose killed.

One thing that I noticed about the sequels is that they made the galaxy seem a lot smaller. Like, I always got the impression that it at least took a couple of days to travel from Tatooine to Alderaan or Naboo to Coruscant, but then Rey and co. go to like five planets in what we're canonically told is only 36 hours. Anyway, this creates a problem with Luke in the Mandoverse. If the galaxy is "big," you can reasonably say that he's off at his isolated Jedi school, unaware that Thrawn or whoever has emerged as a threat 75,000 lightyears away; it's the real-world equivalent of him being on another continent, and at least gives a buffer before a character comes by to tell him. But now, you'd have to question why he doesn't hear about it and show up in an hour.

It will make me sad always knowing how he ends up being an attempted child killer, pessimistic hobo, dying alone.

No matter how cool they make their Luke knowing how he ends up makes it a nonstarter.

Heads really should have rolled after the the disney sequel trilogy - it will be a cautionary tale for future Hollywood talent, on how you can shoot the goose that lays golden eggs. They actually damaged all the previous films,- thats spectacular in its destruction.

I am one of those fans who hates, HATES the Sequels (especially TLJ) with a passion, but if the Rey movie is actually made and is somehow a success, then ofcourse Disney will continue the sequel era going forward; that's specifically why KK pushed for that movie and why Iger signed off on it, that was always their plan, for "Rey" and the Sequels to lead all of Disney starwars. They never once planned for or even expected *Mando & Grogu* to become huge like they did. I do not for one second believe Luke Skywalker will appear in the Mando & Grogu movie, he would distract too much away from those main characters and it would simply smack of desperation. I'll be surprised if the rey movie ever gets made now, and I think the biggest "Luke Problem" Disney has is Dave Filoni explaining WHY Anakin wasn't there to help his own son, where he has helped guide Ahsoka in her journey through the Ahsoka series. Like, WHERE was Anakin to help guide Luke when he was conflicted after when went down between him and Ben in TLJ flashbacks. That's something NOBODY is asking or even thinking about right now, but it's something Filoni is going to have to explore and answer at some point in the future.

…and that’s just Luke. I can’t imagine what they’re going to do to explain Leia, Han and Lando not being there. We’re going to beat Thrawn without the best ship in the Galaxy.

Damn y’all… Let them cook and tell the damn story, no one cared at the end of season 2. It “saved star wars” then. Bottom line we just wanna see A LOT of bad ass heroic Luke Skywalker. Give us a Trilogy of him going HAM! Don’t ruin it for everyone else.

They really painted themselves into a corner by setting the sequals so far in the future and bringing back the original characters only to give them unsatisfying endings.

luke's ultimate fate is such a big shot in disney's foot, there is really no such point in doing with anything involving luke with his ultimate fate in TLJ... hyping him over just ultimately makes his fall in more abrupt and worse, sinceall roads have to lead to the sequels similarly to how all roads in greek myth lead to the trojan war or how all roads in the norse myth lead to the ragnarok

I still think Sebastian Stan can pull off being a younger middle Luke in his 40s. And Disney needs to backup the money truck or promise him to finance a film of his choosing to do it.

Next few Star Wars movies will fail, Mando was great but getting rid of Gena was horrible move and I've heard in season 3 Mando wasn't even a main character

I still haven’t watched the 3rd disney movie because the last jedi just killed the story entirely. I would only see another movie if my family really wants to see it, but even then, I probably just wouldn’t go.

Mandoverse Luke is already an idiot for telling Grogu that attachments are forbidden and for allowing him to go to Tatooine alone without any protection, not to mention doing absolutely nothing about Thrawn or any orher threat to the New Republic

I completely lost interest in Disney Star Wars after they turned Luke Skywalker into a depressed homeless man. I felt like they didn't understand Luke's character ark in the original trilogy. The person who could feel the good in Darth Vader would never react to his nephew that way. Disney's Luke was not the same person. I started to change my mind after the first two seasons of Mando. I thought that Disney was finally going in the right direction when Grogu was going to train with Luke. Of course that didn't last long. Disney went back to the statue quo during the Boba Fett show. I have skipped most of the Disney plus shows since then.

The best way for Luke to get used would be for old-school fans at Lucasfilm to sneak him into lower profile projects that won't get killed by committee - especially near the end of anything that was never going to be continued so that you can avoid the problem of fan reaction drawing the eye of management. While I suspect The Mandalorian show began as a lower priority project and benefited immensely from it, nobody will ever have that sort of creative freedom when it comes to Mando and Grogu again , so I'm not sure their movie is the best place for Luke to appear.

I would be happy if they just made an animated Luke Skywalker show with Mark Hamill doing the voice acting.

I honestly don’t think that many casual fans will go. As popular as they are to SW fans there is a lack of human emotion to them. It’s like making a movie with just Klingons. A mandolarin that hides his face for 3/4 of the movie with ET is risky

Well said! Luke was my first hero. I want to see him in his full power - completely realized! Then I can relegate the sequel trilogy to "legends."

Filoni helped develop the sequels, he's not going to ignore and overwrite them, as much as he ignores and overwrites the EU.

Disney blew the one and only chance they had to make good sequels, the current ones need to be decanonized, but even if they do we'll never be able to see Mark, Carrie, and Harrison on screen together again🙁

Disney truly can’t do anything they make a prequel or ot well it leads to the sequels, they continue the sequels well everyone hates them, they try the old republic everyone will just say they will pull a sequels so they can make new stuff but that doesn’t have the built in fans look the the acolyte and high republic they have no options and only themselves to blame

Did Grogu actually earn his stardom? That's a question I don't think anyone has asked. Is it a member berry or an innovative creation. Ashoka was Filoni's brainchild, so Favreau decided he needed one also. Mando's character is built upon all the legends content, it's why he was such a well received addition (S3 is contentious). Andor was such an underrated masterpiece just as Rogue One. Solo was fun, though, could have used some polish in its script. The Trend here is, basically most of the content that did well did not destroy canon and just ignore lore and continuity. Disney has only one thing to do, scrap their identity/agenda politics and decanonise the atrocities that were the disney movies.

I do look back at the end of Mando season 2 and the sheer joy the fans had for the return of Luke and I see yet another misstep by Disney as they failed to capitalise on a clear sign that the fan base did want more. So Hi Thor Do you think that Disney after mandalorian season 2 should have changed course to try and appeal to the maximum number of Star Wars fans, re-cast Han, Luke and Leia and have them feature as side characters in future projects, building up the actors to a staring movie, the fans by then used to the new actors playing the roles and chomping at the bit to see them on the big screen. Or maybe just stick to streaming and drop their current plans entirely and do a new republic show, have the original trilogy three facing off against a warlord Zsinj like character in another part of the galaxy away from where Mando had been featured, worlds choosing sides as republic and imperial forces clash.

Another problem with Luke is how the NR era has to keep dodging him...Two lightsaber wielding, Force users attack a Republic ship, and NO ONE thinks to come to Luke about this?? Luke's training temple is getting started, why would Hera NOT have him take on Jacen as one of his first students? And if the movie is gonna involve Thrawn's attack on the galaxy, are we just gonna be told that Luke is doing exciting stuff elsewhere? Or just piloting that X-Wing flying around, but just never see him in the cockpit? Screw all that, just recast already!🙄😮‍💨

Hey Thor, the only long term solution is to stop making content near any of the movies and make movies set way back in the Old Republic or way forward where no one knows any of the characters we've already had.

Go back and read the EU. That's the only place to find good Star Wars stories. Before the Dark Times. Before Disney.

Honestly the only thing they could do for me is to strike the sequels from canon. I can enjoy TFA to a degree (if I ignore the whole 'Luke has gone awol' under-current) but the other two I just don't want to see again. The thing I want most is a post-Endor Luke/Leia adventure but not while KK is there, she'll make it lame. Maybe when KK finally retires, and Filoni is put in charge, he can wipe the sequels, delete them from D+ and 'start over' with the Mandoverse as the springboard. That might be his long-game plan for all we know...

I've kind of had enough of star wars. I consider luke and darth vader as the 2 most important characters. I think disney has ruined luke, but I did think that "kenobi" and "ahsoka" finished off vader's character in a good way. I wouldn't want to see more vader either. Between "kenobi," "book of boba fett," and "the last jedi" luke's character is just all over the place.

I just think it’s so funny the backtracking gymnastics Disney has to do to make most fans care again. Most just wanted to see Han, Luke, and Leia together again one last time. How hard was that to pull off?? And yet Disney fumbled the ball. Miserably. Star Wars is beyond repair until they introduce new and interesting characters in a different time period. I don't think so. By then, 2 years from now, no one cares about "Grogu" and "Mando". It will flop, like everything else they create.

Rebels fixed this issue with the World Between Worlds. When Ahsoka was killed in the first timeline, the sequel trilogy happened. When Ezra pulled her into the WBW, a new timeline was created where the Mando-verse happened and the final battle is against Thrawn rather than somehow Palpatine. Luke goes on the make a thriving Jedi Temple, and fans everywhere shouted out in glee. Simple. Even DC, with all their faults, have multiple timelines and universes so fans can stay happy…

6:45 I hate what they did to look in BobF. He gave Grogu a dilemma between attachment and the Jedi order. It’s either the beskar armour or Yoda’s lightsaber. He of all people should know the past mistakes of the Jedi. And yet he is repeating the same mistakes. It’s ridiculous.

It's a surprise to me, but I don't want any more Luke Skywalker. I desperately wanted the sequel trilogy to be like Heir to the Empire. But it's not and it can never be, and I'd rather Disney just did something else. Actually I'd rather they fail completely and have to sell Lucasfilm, because Disney has treated Star wars with all the reverence of a private equity firm buying the rights to something and then spewing out some direct to DVD garbage just to prevent other people from doing something with vision.

Until the sequel trilogy abomination is retconned out of existence, new Star Wars is dead to me even if Favreau and Luke are back.

Hey Thor, What if they made the "Rey Movie" about "fixing" the sequels? Like the Empire, I don't believe that The First Order just goes away after the events of TROS. Maybe to hold on to their empire, they double down on their brutality, so Rey and Co. uses The World Between Worlds to go back in time to try prevent the rise of The First Order in the first place? They could come back to a point that takes place after the Mandoverse movies (so to not interfere with them), where they have to team up with Luke and the gang to stop Palpatine "somehow" returning. There could even be a moment where they realize that they can never go home again, because if they're successful, their home, and maybe they themselves, will never exist. Luke gets redeemed, Han and Leia never die, and Ben never falls to the Dark Side. Rey and Finn join Luke's academy, Poe either dies or just gets folded into Rogue Squadron, and all their "future knowledge" becomes worthless because their future no longer exists.

I don't want them to try "fixing them", nothing that happened there was right. Only way of saving the sequels .. is making everything that happened there just dissapear from canon.

Think plenty have said this in one way or another before... but in terms of the jedi as an organisation... the OT was about the Return of the Jedi, the PT was about their failures and eventual fall, the ST should have thus been about their renaissance and a lasting legacy... instead all we got was a failed Luke Skywalker, passing on nothing of value to Rey... putting the legacy of the Jedi into a worse state than it was at the end of RoTJ. It didnt rhyme, it wasnt poetic... it was trash and it irredeemably trashed Luke Skywalkers character arc. Can it be bypassed? Maybe. Will it be. Likely not... SWs Disney will just make more content for people to consume (dont ask questions just consume more product).

Any movies connected to the sequels need to fail if we ever want this universe back in a meaningful way. Support Transformers 1 it's an actually good film that doesn't lead to BS.

I randomly watched one of your older videos from around that time and you said you liked the movie. But most of your 2018 videos and after you talked about why it’s bad and you didn’t like it. Hard. Pass. Luke is my favorite fictional character in all of human existence. I will not support anything that leads to Jake Skywalker.

That's easy for me, the sequels are just high budget fan fiction to me, they don't exist and neither does anything that hints that they do.

I see two paths. Path 1 is best path is to wipe 7-9 from all canon. They can even use world between worlds to do it if they need a story reason to do so. Option 2 for Disney in order to save face. Filoni gave them another way out if they want to take it. Luke has a clone named Jake. The "Luke" in sequel trilogies is Jake. Luke meanwhile went elsewhere maybe the other Galaxy that Filoni added in the Ashoka series. He went to the other galaxy to get away from the sith and rebuild his order in peace. Maybe he took Grogu with him and has a family.

The only way to make “Star Wars good again” is to remove the Sequels. Sticking with Disneys mess makes any efforts of Luke and the other heroes pointless. And for crying out loud, let Luke get married. Bring back Mara Jade. He deserves a happy life. The Skywalker bloodline should live on.

I could see using Luke like that being able to win back some fans. It would take some tight writing to pull that balance off. And I am not sure LF has enough talent right now to write that well enough. Maybe , with Favreau there to nix the bad ideas. But how do you mess up Obi Wan and Boba!!!? Yet they somehow managed.

I was remembering this Star Wars game that came out on the first Xbox before Revenge of the Sith came out and they didn't know exactly how Anakin was going to turn. I don't remember the specifics but he had to sacrifice part of himself and/or take on a dark side ability in order to defeat the main antagonist, which in turn caused a shift in his personality. Maybe something along those lines is what will happen to Luke in that he will be heroic and end up having to sacrifice part of himself which set him down the path of the sequels.

Hey Thor, I was talking to a guy a few weeks ago who runs a Star Wars shop in a town near where I live and we were discussing the direction the 'Mandoverse' should take. I have a video coming out about this soon on my own channel (I'm not a RU-vidr but I do like to occasionally share my theories and ideas about Star Wars) and basically the two of us came up with a great outline for this era of the franchise on the spot. We have all these different shows (The Mandalorian, TBOBF, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew) and they all need to tie in together to not only create a coherent story but to build toward a climactic ending. What we came up with (and I can only hope that this is the direction Jon and Dave are going in) is that the Mandalorian and Grogu movie will feature Din Djarin hunting down ex-imperials for the New Republic, working alongside Hera Syndulla all while hearing from Ezra that Thrawn has returned to the galaxy. Mando will presumably encounter Thrawn by the end of the movie which will be continued with a conflict between the New Republic and Thrawn's empire in S4 of Mando. Meanwhile, in Ahsoka S2 we see Baylan tracking down this mysterious power on Peridia which will turn out to be Abeloth who was banished there millennia ago. Although she can't return to the main galaxy, she controls an army of Grisk (the new canon version of the Yuzahn Vong) who she sends into the galaxy to attack the outer rim and spy on the powers that be (Abeloth and the Grisk would be portrayed as a threat equivalent to LOTR's Sauron and the orcs). By the end of Mando S4, Thrawn will have been defeated (perhaps with the aid of Luke, Boba Fett, Bo Katan, etc) only to reveal to the good guys that he was merely using the Empire's might to fight off the Grisk and that when he was stranded on Peridia he saw the full extent of the threat they pose. With Thrawn's true intentions revealed, the imperial remnant would then split into two factions: the Thrawn loyalists and the Palpatine loyalists (the latter would go on to form the First Order but that only needs to be implied and doesn't need to be shown directly so as not to tie this time period too much into the sequels). The entire Mandoverse time period would then conclude with Thrawn and the good guys joining forces to defeat Abeloth and the Yuzon Vong and then Luke rebuilding the jedi order in the main galaxy while Ahsoka spreads the light of the Jedi to this other galaxy with Ezra, Grogu, and maybe Kal Kestis. This way, we still get to see a heroic portrayal of Luke skywalker that doesn't end in tragedy, but we also get a new opportunity to continue the classic Jedi stories in the new galaxy without contradicting the sequels. Anyway, this video reminded me of this conversation that I had and thought I'd share it to hear what you and everyone else thinks of it. I do have a video coming out soon which goes into this theory in more detail, but for now I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

There is no 'mandoverse'. There is only Star Wars.

It's not just the sequels that need to be retconned, it's everything. Don't forget, Disney has been adamant about shoving the "high republic" nonsense into the canon. It's not just The Acolyte, it's books, comics, and even Jedi Survivor. Everything they've produced has just created more inconsistencies within the established lore. Even Grogu is a problem, because they used Moff Gideon's experiments as a way to retroactively explain Snoke and the other Palpatine clones. It _all_ needs to go.

One of the issues with the MCU was requiring you watch certain shows/movies to understand the current movie. So more obscure tie-ins would fly over most viewers’ heads, if you’re referencing Snoke offhand or something. The only thing you can really count on everyone understanding in advance is the original trilogy.

It's malpractice that the closest thing to peak Luke Skywalker we ever got to see on screen was a brief sequence in one episode of a spin-off series.

I don't support Disney Star Wars, much less Disney as a company. The days of watching movies on faith or as soon as they arrive are over for me. If it doesn't have word-of-mouth, I'd rather spend my time and money more enjoyably. Grogu should have been a Season 1 and Done. Bring audiences in with the world building, the hard knock decisions, cute baby yoda intrigue, stoic masculinity, pass Grogu off to Luke, then get back to his cool work as a morally grey bounty hunter. Instead, we undid a successful season 2 conclusion in the middle of someone else's TV show. Their insistence on milking Baby Yoda will be their undoing. They don't know how to make a Star Wars Bounty Hunter show starring The Mandalorian without including a creature that will lose its baby charm the moment it starts holding conversations in Yoda-speak.

Disney will make more money by simply releasing the OT and PT. They should admit their failure at capturing the fanbase and move on.

I saw the OT and the prequels in the theatre during their initial runs. I have yet to see the Rise of Palpatine in any manner. Mandalorian and Grogu (or any other Star Wars movie) is a very hard sell for me.

One of the best things about Mando S1 was that it wasn't directly linked to the ST, the other trilogies or the Skywalkers and showed that Disney LucasFilm could actually tell good stories in the Star Wars universe without all those things. For me Mando started going down hill as soon as they introduced the TCW characters, TCW being a show that most normies didn't watch made a barrier to entry, and when they started clearly linking it to the narrative black hole known as the ST it really went downhill. It would have been so much better to leave it it's own separate thing. If the Mando movie moves away from the driection it was heading in S3 and back more to it's roots it's got a better chance of being successful. Even then I still don't have a desire to go see it in the theatre.

Personally I feel like even if they fix Luke and his Jedi Academy in the time between episodes 6 and 7, the problem is that we really don't have any next generation Skywalker characters like the EU did with their version of the Solo kids. We'll still unfortunately be missing out on that particular dynamic of Luke training the next generation of Skywalkers no matter how much Disney fixes Luke's Jedi Order. All we have in canon is Ben Solo, and he's doomed to become one of the most nonsensical characters in Star Wars no matter how much they try to make his origin story make more sense.

The leadership at Lucasfilm hate Luke Skywalker as a character, and dislike the fans who do resonate with the character. (Just look at them making fun of Star Wars Theory for crying when Luke was revealed in Mando Season 2.

Hard pass.

One thing that Last Jedi could have done with Luke that might have worked is have him on the island because after Kylo Ren wipes out his students, Luke has a vision that he is not the one to rebuild the Jedi Order but rather a student he will meet and train on Ach To is (namely Rey). Then, when Rey first meets Luke, he's acting kermudgeony because he's pulling a Yoda and testing Rey. Don't get me wrong, I still would have preferred seeing Luke rebuild the Order. However, this would have been believable and actually is similar to an account from the Bible. King David wanted to build a Temple to God, but God told him that that wasn't for him to do but for his son, Solomon, to do. So David prepared all the funds and materials for Solomon but didn't actually build the temple.

If Disney truly wanted to do whatever would make them money, they would have followed through with George Lucas' sequels. They would be in the position they wanted to be in when they bought Lucasfilm from the jump... Instead, they decided to disrespect everything that came before, along with seemingly working to alienate their core audience. Literally the worst things they could have done if they truly were interested in success.

The thing that really bugged me was not having a Luke/Anakin scene at all during the sequel trilogy. Disney really fumbled the bag there alone.
