The legendary quartet, The Manhattan Transfer, is celebrating its golden anniversary after 50 years of captivating audiences with its dynamic performances and unforgettable vocal harmonies.
In honor of five decades, the 10-time Grammy award-winning group released Fifty, an album revisiting their biggest hits with new arrangements and timeless favorites from George and Ira Gershwin and The Beach Boys.
In addition to the 10-track set, the foursome consisting Alan Paul, Janis Siegel, Cheryl Bentyne and Trist Curless, has also embarked on its final cross-continental tour. Their global expedition includes stops in the US, Europe, the UK, Japan, and Australasia, with dates continuing through 2023.
The Manhattan Transfer has had an incredible career over many years, releasing 19 singles and 29 albums with music featured in major films and television shows.
In 1981, they became the first group to win Grammys in both pop and jazz categories in the same year, and in 1998 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
They’ve also recorded with an impressive array of artists, including Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Smokey Robinson, Laura Nyro, Phil Collins, B.B. King, Chaka Khan, James Taylor, and Frankie Valli.
Since their inception on October 1, 1972, The Manhattan Transfer has endured changing times and replaced two original members, Laurel Massé and Tim Hauser. However, the current members, Janis, Alan, Cheryl, and Trist, have stayed true to the integrity and artistry left by founding member Hauser, who passed away in 2014.
We had the pleasure of speaking to them at our LifeMinute studio, where they told us about the new album, the final tour, and how they have managed to make it in the biz while still capturing the ears of so many after 50 years.
This is a LifeMinute with The Manhattan Transfer.

Sometime around 2005 I attended one of their concerts in Sacramento. I approached Alan Paul afterward and showed him the cassette cover of their first album. I told him I listened to that cassette in my car on the drive from Tennessee to California, and by the time I arrived I had learned every part to every song. He invited me to come hang out with him and talk. Was able to speak at length with Cheryl Bentyne and Tim Houser, as well. Very nice, down-to-earth people. A great thrill.

I will always be a fan. I have seen them LIVE on two occasions and it was amazing. They have so many great albums, but my little favourite, which I can listen too anytime, is their great masterpiece "The Offbeat Of Avenues" (1992). This is how I discovered them.. I love this album, and later found out they actually wrote and produced it - wow. I also love "Extensions" (1979) "Brasil" (1987) "Mecca for The Moderns" (1981) "Spice Of Life" (1983) and of course "Vocalise" (1986) but many other songs from all their albums. Many people like ABBA. This group is "My ABBA". Was so sorry to hear of Tim Hauser departure. I wish them all the very best. Great interview - thanks!

I was lucky enough to see them once, at the Fabulous Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia in what I consider the best seats in the house (dead center, front row, loge). Fantastic show!

It's great and the best group. I'm Japanese, and I've been listening to it since I was in junior high school. Timhauser! I really miss him. I also take good care of the cassette tapes at that time.

Do they even talk about how Trist joined? I'd be so much humbler to have joined such a legendary band late. Dude acts like he owns the place. It even sounded like the old folk are trying to avoid talking about him.

Manhattan Transfer inspired me so much. as a teen drummer. For me, set the bar high for every singer I've played with. Great now to hear Janice Siegel on WBGO on Saturday mornings. My favorite song? Well, two: On The Boulevard, and Smile Again. Smile Again grabs my entire body. Steve Gadd was the drummer.

Loved them for decades. This album proves they have lost nothing and they are as good, if not better, than ever.

tmt! is an amazing harmonic vocal quartet. my favorite track with a mu🎼icial sci-fi melodic twist from their Lp extentions is the 1979 track of twilight zone/twilight tone followed by birdland that i,m sure that rod serling and charlie parker would certainly enjoy listening to if they both were still here with US! RIP!🎹🎷🖊✝

I remember taking a date to see the original run of Grease on Broadway in the early 70s, and Alan Paul played Johnny Casino. The most hilarious sight in the play was Johnny (Alan) swinging through the air with a guitar slung across his back, singing like Elvis! 😂

It's fortunate that Trist had some good group singing experience because the death of Tim Hauser would have probably ended the group. I think Tim would have approved.
