I've watched this video several times now, and loved it each time. Whoever had the idea of matching Manhattan Transfer up with Weather Report should have received an award of some kind. Maybe "Most Serendipitous Musical Match of the Decade". I'd vote for that.

*_I'm Old School... real musicians played and real singers sang.._* I can still remember back in the 70's and 80's when we actually had real talent. Musicians played live and singers sang live on stage in front of many thousands of people. Many bands played just as good Live as they did in Studio. *_Real Bands don't use 'gimmicks' they use Real Talent..._*

I´m also happy that I have seen Manhattan Transfer live one time in Vienna and later even in Klagenfurt. To be honest. It was not. The arrangement was not good. The mixer was absolutly terrible and the guitar out of tune. At about 5:25 Cheryl Bentyne and Janis Siegel have to bring the band back into the tempo. Everybody can see this. But! At all it was a great festival and this song is Jazz-History.

He was there the year before. I was at the "meltdown" concert and to be honest, Jaco killed it. He got into beef with the band and they walked off. He then did a bass solo of Purple haze and I was blown away but he looped it, put the bass down and walked off stage. Weather Report never came back but Jaco decided to do a solo of Purple Haze for about a minute and a half until they turned the stage and Cosby introduced the next act. That solo from Jaco was amazing. I mean if it's around, it's some of the best bass solo work I've ever seen live.

Birdland It happened down in Birdland Oh! In the middle of that hub I remember one jazz club Where we went to pat feet Down on fifty-secon' street Everybody heard that word That they named it after Bird Where the rhythm swooped and swirled The jazz corner of the world An' the cats they gigged in there Were beyond compare Birdland - I'm singin' Birdland Birdland - Ol' swingin' Birdland Hey, man, the music really turns you on! Y' turn me on, Really, y' turn me aroun' 'N turn me on Down them stairs, lose them cares - where? Yeah, baby All o' the cats had the cookin' on People just sat an' they was steady lookin' on Then Bird...he came 'n spread the word... Birdland Yes, indeed, he did Yes, indeed, he did Yes, indeed, he did Yes, he did, Parker played at Birdland Yes, he really did Yes, indeed, he really did Yes, he really did Told the truth down in Birdland Yes, indeed he did, Yardbird Parker played in Birdland Yes, indeed, he really did Charlie Parker played in Birdland Bird named it, Bird made it, Bird heard it Then played it Well-stated! How y' gonna figure out A way t' bring it all about amid a Lot o' other music on the set'n on The scene know what I mean? I cannot think of it right now, maybe someone will help me out with that. Anyway, I already knew that Josef Zawinul of Weather Report had written the song and the band recorded it. Thank goodness one the Manhattan Transfer group acknowledged that during a brief interview. I was about to say," HOLD ON...WHAT! You best own up!

this tempo is wild - and good for MT for keeping in some kind of key with that odd keyboard bass drone drifting flat and then sharp!

RIght, so did they hit the 8 ball a little much that day? Dang! So fast! I still prefer the Jaco/Erskine lineup

I met thèse fine gentlemen in a diner just outside Jacksonville many years ago. We talked for many minutes and I was impressed by their consumption of waffles in syrup. Very impressive.
