A playthrough of Sega's 1995 horror-themed interactive movie/FMV adventure game for the Sega Saturn, The Mansion of Hidden Souls.
This video presents the game in its original aspect ratio. On the Sega Saturn it ran in a 16:9 pillarboxed frame: I merely cropped the black borders.
Because the game shares a nearly identical name with its Sega CD predecessor, Mansion of Hidden Souls (note the lack of the word "the") many people assume this game as an upgraded "remaster." Let me assure you: the Saturn one is most certainly not the same game. It shares the same basic setting - the titular mansion - but a number of things have changed.
Instead of a brother trying to save his sister-turned-butterfly, The Mansion of Hidden Souls now places us in control of someone who has been summoned to the mansion by the elder on the night of a blood-red full moon. You have the special ability to see the butterfly souls of those that inhabit the mansion, and these souls thrive off of the mansion's apparently willingness to grant all of their wishes. The elder fears that the moon is an omen, though, and that something sinister lurks behind the mansion's intentions. You've got to figure things out and stop the mansion, and its inhabitants, from disappearing, because if mansion is destroyed, the hopes and dreams of mankind will be destroyed with it.
Yeah, it's a bit convoluted and odd.
The game play mechanics are identical to the Sega CD's Mansion of Hidden Souls - you move around pre-rendered FMV paths, exploring the mansion, picking up items, and speaking with its inhabitants. Instead of speaking with butterflies the entire time, there are now "people" to be found - or rather, their "souls" show themselves as disembodied heads that float about when they speak to you. I certainly understood why they'd try to make the mansion feel a bit more "occupied" than it previously did, but they're all pretty ugly and goofy-looking, often making them difficult to take seriously.
The puzzles still revolve around object-manipulation and visiting areas at the right time, so if you appreciated the laid-back pacing and relative lack of challenge of the original, you'll find more to like in this adventure. There's a weird tarot card mechanic included this time, but I never really found a use for it outside of being able to see a new card when you go to a new room.
The graphics and sound have seen a MASSIVE upgrade - this is a true generational leap over what was possible on the Sega CD. The video is now higher resolution and running at a far higher color depth - compression artifacts are still visible, but everything is much clearer and easier to make out. It also runs at a significantly higher framerate, so you aren't as likely to feel nauseated by the choppy movement that plagued the visuals in the (albeit impressive for the time) 1993 Sega CD original.
The sound fares pretty well, too. The effects and voices are all clearer, and the music suits it quite well. Those voice actors do bring it down a bit though. Oddly enough, the quality of the acting seems to have gone in this sequel - aren't things supposed to improve?
Despite the checklist of improvements made, though, I can't say that I prefer this game over Mansion of Hidden Souls. This one lacks something... soul, maybe. The story's premise holds a lot more potential than the original tale of brother and sister torn asunder, but its execution lacks any of the poignancy or gravitas that carried the tone of the original. Things definitely pick up in the latter-half of the game (and they veer waaaaaay off into "what were they smoking?" territory - seriously, that ending defies description) - well, at least until it becomes a Sailor Moon episode in the final "encounter" (which I loved for how utterly bizarre it was), but the game has a hard time finding its feet initially, and never quite hits the heights that the earlier game did.
Regardless, if you liked the original, you'll probably like this one too. The narrative isn't as successful, but if you like the style of play, you probably can overlook that for the huge improvements made to the presentation.
I would've loved to have seen a "remaster" of the Sega CD game released on the Saturn with the updated graphics (hopefully without those floating heads... so corny). But then, I also would have loved to have seen a sequel to this one - to somehow resolve the mystery of the "mansion." Who knows? It might happen one day.
"A Mansion of Hidden Souls," anybody?

While it's not quite as atmospheric and foreboding as the original, fans of the Sega CD game will surely appreciate the hugely improved graphics and the same simple but effective gameplay mechanics.

I've noticed in a lot of play through of this game, no one goes into the room under the stairs and triggers the event with the painter. I forget how to trigger it myself, but I know I did it when I was younger. Update: I know it's been two years, but After you get the watch you can trigger the painter to appear. Also, if you are really bad at answering questions he shows up to give you a bad ending and a game over.

@sonyblank1487 Год назад
Yeah. Using the under-the-stairs shortcut after entering Elder's room (once his room is pure energy) will trigger the painter ending.

It's not mid-'90s without these cutting edge CGI and hammy voice acting. Can you believe this was the state-of-the-art technology only 20 years ago?
@tgreaux5027
@tgreaux5027 3 года назад
More like 25-26 years at the time of your comment and now its just under 30 years ago.......so yes. I can absolutely believe that. Take a look at the console generation right before the first CD based consoles came out.....it was absolutely a huge leap. Go back 25 years from the day these games were made and youd be looking at the Atari 2600 and the Commodore 64. The leap in tech is wayyy bigger between those years than it is from the Sega CD/Saturn years to today. I remember the first time I saw actual video and real people in a video game, my mind was blown. Sega CD was one of my favorite consoles of all time.

It just occurred to me that the mansion in this videogame looks a lot like Graceland. Now if you had to find the ghost of Elvis, that would have been super cool.

One thing I do recall of this game is that the music was composed by a Studio Ghibli musician, Yuji Nomi, which is a really strange pull but the budget must have been tight if they could only afford 5-second loops. This game haunts me in a very specific part of my brain, I don't think it's a good game but it definitely captivated me with its bizarre imagery.

The Sega CD version was eerie, atmospheric and melancholic. This version is saturated by excessive voices and explanations. Even with its inferior graphics, the Sega CD game provided a deeper emotional experience. Of course, people growing up with this one will find it more robust and visually appealing.

Still makes you wonder why games like Sam and Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle were never ported to home systems at the time. I mean, we got 2 Discworld games on the PS1 with full voice acting. Instead we got stuff like this, and while I actually quite enjoy this game and the other cheesy ones like it, it would have been great to get what the PC players were enjoying.

You are correct on that this is not a remake of the sega cd game, in fact the PAL and japanese version of both games are different. for PAL, the sega cd game is named Yumeni Mystery Mansion, while the saturn game is called The Mansion of Hidden Souls.

I played it in the mid 90s on Sega Saturn and it was kinda scary. Wasn't it possible to trigger a scene, where some one is shooting a pistol? Or maybe my memory is wrong. Also this reminds me of Resident Evil 1.

@Viczarratt
@Viczarratt 5 лет назад
The music in this game are raw samples in 16bit stereo, possibly at 44k or 22k and it has no header. they are short samples looped continuously. if you are fairly technical, you can place the original Saturn disc in a windows PC and use audacity to extract the raw files and convert them to wav or mp3. the files are in a folder named "sound" and there are 442 files in it, because all the spoken dialogue is in there as well.

It's so lame how their mouths are not at all synchronized to the voice at all, not even the Godzilla effect. It's like the old adventure games where you read what the character is saying as their mouths move in a uniform manner or like those cheap talking dolls where the mouth just opens and closes as the recording inside the doll plays.
