Show creators have stated that the similarities to Spirited Away weren't conscious/intentional but that doesn't mean they're not there! Some of the tone of the series was inspired by Hedgehog in the Fog, and the tree at 1:04 was directly referenced from the film as a little nod to it. :) And of course a lot of concept art (and thus some shots in the series) were laid out referencing Gustave Dore's art--Dore illustrated the Divine Comedy and a collection of folklore called Fontaine's Fables.

The germanic folk figure of the Erlkönig was hugely influential in the design and nature of the Beast, and the poem Die Erlkönig (the Elf King, or Arl King) later turned into one of the most artistic pieces of music period (seriously, its brilliant) was a major influence for the whole tone of the show and design of it.

The beast also gave The Girl from the other side’s beast called the teacher! It’s rarely brought up and im not sure which come first but after reading it then watching OTGW I couldn’t stop thinking about the resemblance

There are quite a few scenes taken directly from spirited away. There's a part where a frog jumps up in chihiro's face as she crosses the bridge, also in over the garden wall, and when the dog coughs up the black turtle and it scoots away, the same thing happened in spirited away when chihiro fed the dragon the medicine from the river spirit. He coughed up a little black demon think that just crawls away

The interesting thing about Frogland is that the people who would work on that film would later work on a full-length stop motion feature called Le Roman de Renard (The Tale of the Fox), one of the earliest stop motion films and one of the earliest films that was salvaged.

I found a reffrence from the story "dante's inferno". In the story, Dante went to the 7th circle of hell where there was this forest where all the trees use to be people who had did violence to themselves, kinda like the oil trees from OTGW

The glowing bell in the frog is a direct reference to the 1937 animated film 'The Old Mill'. Where a frog swallows a firefly and starts to glow and ring when they croak.

Interesting ^^ I never noticed any of these inspirations when I watched the show, but the animals in clothes always made me think of the Wind in the Willows. And Cloud City from Babes in the Woods reminds me of the Phantom Tollbooth, it just seems to embody the same bizarre whimsicality xD

Babes in the Woods is also the name of an anonymously written poem about two children getting lost in the woods and dying (which is were the Disney short drew its name).

The kind-of-angelic song that that plays in the background when they go to sleep at the beginning of Babes in the Wood reminds me of the "Sleep, Children, Sleep" sequence in The Night of the Hunter, another story about two kids stranded far from home. Also a lot of the autumn backgrounds, especially in the first two episodes, feel like they might be influenced by the Nutcracker sequence from Fantasia and the Sleepy Hollow segment in The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.

You need to watch more old cartoons. The cloud city episode is full of tropes from early cartoons from the 30's, usually involving societies of insects/toys/food that get invaded by a bad guy (like a big spider) who kidnaps a pretty girl and is thwarted by a heroic little guy.
