Sometimes the most obvious answer isn't always such a bad answer. That is how Splatoon got _squids_ as protagonists, after all. They tried so hard not to use squids that they almost went with Mario by default.
I’m still surprised they came up with “shoot and move through ink/paint” before “humanoid Squids/Octopi”. I still think it feels like they designed it out of order.

I didn't really hate it but i didn't love it, i liked how he's kinda cute and cartoony

Pretty freaking obvious that Grizz made Grizzco to kill off all the salmonoids (I think they lied about that not being his goal) and that he's behind the fuzzy goo because he wants to revive all mammals.

I always assumed Grizz being a literal bear despite being so secretive was kinda the joke- Inklings have little reason to know much about bears and are generally kinda oblivious, so I thought they were going for a dramatic irony thing where the audience clearly assumes he's obviously a bear while the inklings have no idea

Exactly... Playing Splatoon 2 salmon run I several times randomly thought that aren't we seemingly working for an actual BEAR? A furry mammalian who eats fish? And I found it hilarious how the inklings seemed completely oblivious to it. It's even funnier in the japanese version where the name is literally "Mr. Bear". I found that it was obviously the joke, that something so strange was straight in front of their eyes
I actually really like the idea of an adult Inkling/ Octoling as an antagonist. Splatoon 3 could easily have some kind of “fight the power” type of story where the inkling kids need to rise up against the threats of their own government/ society. Inklings are already shown to act like typical rebellious teenagers, and with the theme of Chaos it could make perfect sense. I’m honestly not sure Mr. Grizz will play as huge a role in Splat 3 as everyone seems to think, but imagine fighting Toni Kensa or like… Pearl’s dad as the final boss.
The weapon companies never had much lore to them, so fighting one like Toni Kensa would be pretty cool, especially because he makes to most expensive weapons in the game
I would think that Grizzco is more suited to be closer related to inklings as they _know_ ins and outs of the laws of the inkling society. Meaning that it is a "shady" place or an "outside" shop can mean that whoever is remotely controlling the place is probably doing it from out of the continent. take this with a little salt but as much as inkopolis is thriving well not all locations are. there are probably more inland locations that need a source of power and with how simple-minded the youth of inklings are they are getting fashion for golden eggs. to children, this is a fair trade; however, adults need a different form of money to live. This touches on some scary topics but they are using children to get power outsourced to inland locals. This is a theory that seems a little more realistic and sadly has some real-world ties.
I still am pretty sure that age 14 is in fact the adult age for Inklings. One of the Sunken Scrolls featuring a picture of food, relaxation and dating calls the Inklings "young adults," and the Inkling in the picture looks as old as what we have seen. It's not child labor if their definition of adult age is different.
@@justinalicea1590 I would have to go and look I don't mind the idea that they are old enough to get part time jobs as some "yound adults" can get jobs around age 16 at least in my part of the world. But that does not fully mean that they are not being used for their simple ideals. At 13 to16 most "young adults" are learning money management and responsibilities. They go to malls to buy clothes and knick knacks not always to pay bills or food. I mean not all video games have the responsible adult things like paying rent and cooking dinner. So I can pass that off. But with how the game is marketed they are still labeled as kids even if they are "young adults". I know video games are fiction and perhaps their society ages different. Still doesn't debunk the idea that they have simple minds and they are potentially being used by perhaps their own elders who have lived longer and understand the world better.
The Grizzco gear lore is sincerely incredible, it makes ya think 'bout the relationship between a race-exterminator-sort-of-illegal-small-rich-mystery-guy, and a lot of the enterprises that we buy from in the world of Splatoon, and even a food truck. We really need a video that talks about it. Plz, I NEED IT, EVEN IF IT'S ONLY THEORY-BASED
(SPLATOON 3 SPOILERS): Personally, I think Mr Grizz being an actual bear (or at least a modified/evolved form out it) still makes sense in Splatoon lore. Sure, all mammals are supposedly extinct, but Grizz was put into a cold sleep and sent in space along with several other animals in space _before_ the flood happened, with the space rocket crashing back to Earth _long_ after that. Also, before Splatoon 3, Judd and Li'l Judd were said to be the only _known_ mammals left... meaning that _if_ there were mammals out there, they're not known by society. Mr. Grizz was completely shrouded in mystery, so until now, nobody knew _what_ he even was... meaning that he'd be applicable to be one of those few unknown mammals left. So yeah, it may be a bit too face-value-ish, or raise questions at a second glance, but I think it works.
Pearls dad has another two reasons it could be him. He knows alot about weapon modding and seems to have a company behind it. Also pearl had suspisiously lacking story. With her winning, she is going to be the centre of the story

You didn't mention the octoleet goggles so I'll throw my hat in for that I like the idea that there was some sort of trade/agreement between Grizzco and the octarians, most likely done behind the salmonid's back. Having the salmonids be weakened by Grizzco and the constant salmon runs could make them more dependent on their octarian trade agreements, and potentially getting them a better deal than what they've already got, they need all the extra energy they after all. On top of this, Octavio seems like a high risk, high reward type of guy, hence the Team Chaos and zapfish stealing
honest to god i ALMOST briefly mentioned the concept of grizz secretly trading with the octarians but scrapped it! i do think its an interesting explanation for the octoleet goggles. something else that strikes me is how there is salmon run ads hung up even in octo canyon....
I just want to say, since Tartar is an AI, he could have his conscious backed up somewhere deep within Kamabo corp, thats why he appered in the final splatfest trailer, he never really died but his main body was destroyed.
Plot twist: the Grizzly does exist and is connected to Grizzco, but is not Mr. Grizz, instead being the CEO’s pet (Mr. Grizz getting the name for his exotic pet). Edit: Be warned, Splat 3 spoilers after this… …so, turned out we were wrong. In hindsight though, maybe it should’ve been obvious they weren’t going to have Mr. Grizz be an Octoling or something when almost every other character in the series uses a pun name that has SOMETHING to do with their physical description. That said though, I’m actually kinda alright with the reveal, since he was pretty cartoonishly stylized just like Judd was.
I hope he is an automatic voice who is presented as a bear mascot. I hope the actual CEO of Grizzco is an inkling or an octoling. And mostly, i hope he is not a villain in the next game because it would ruin the mysterious vibe.
@@rassicas To be fair, “I hope this and that” isn’t really a good point for an argument, but I personally agree that Grizz shouldn’t be the villain. Though, I won’t disagree with the decision of having Grizz be a villain type character as I trust the Splatoon development team to be able to make something true to Splatoon and it’s style and lore. Proposing any idea that we personally think would be “better” would sort of spit on the face of the creative vision the devs have, and so far they’ve been doing a more than stellar job at seeing through with that vision, so I would be very optimistic about the release of Splatoon 3.

Okay, I understand you not wanting Mr. Grizz to be a bear, and that's a totally valid opinion to have. But on the other hand, please consider that bears are nature's perfect animal, and everything is improved by the presence of more bears, especially as characters.
I greatly appreciate that you acknowledged the "Professor is Mr Grizz" theory. I was one of the first to truly lay out that theory. I have developed answers to your various counter arguments. But I agree with you, and think that the Professor should just stay dead as to not lose the value in his death, sacrifice, and everything that came because of it.

the obviousness of Mr. Grizz is what actually makes it the most plausible option in my eyes, because it feels like they're making it so obvious that no one would guess it. also, with the size of the Ark Polaris, I theorize that it was a last effort for humanity to keep itself alive, with it being launched into space to avoid extinction. it's a literal ark to wait out the flood. and so, maybe it isn't that he's thousands of years old, but that he's just the newest in multiple generations of bears raised on the Ark Polaris. this would also explain his sentience, because there would be centuries for the bears to evolve and for humans to experiment on them, perhaps giving them sentience. when the ship crash landed to earth, Mr Grizz was the only survivor.
Considering the "Return of the Mammalians" trailer just released I'm curious how you would feel if Mr. Grizz was a bear, but was collecting the golden eggs to use their powers to bring mammals out of stasis or clone them or something else of that nature?

Honestly I like the fact that he is a bear because it adds a whole new layer to the story and not everything needs to be some Machiavellian twist. It makes more sense that he is a bear since it wasn't super obvious and it's still good writing. He's The last remnant of a long gone era. And I think the secret log makes it even cooler and it makes me more excited for the story rather than making him some weird goop entity that would add nothing. These aren't plot holes and the game accounts for the fact that he is gone by replacing the statue and seemingly leaving his company in an automated state of affairs. I don't think the team did anything wrong I think you were just hoping for your head Cannon to be so true that you convinced yourself of the most obvious possibility to not be true even though in reality it wasn't as obvious as you claimed. You shouldn't try to convince yourself that the story isn't what it is because you perceive it as shallow, it makes the most sense that they would make him a bear given that that was the intent from the beginning and they weren't trying to make it incredibly obscure or pull a Kingdom hearts. This is better for the story as a whole and it's about the past (mammals) coming back to affect the future (Fishies).
Idon't hate the fact that it's a bear but it could also have been fun with a tardigrade, especially with the space theme and the fact that they can hibernate too. It wouldn't work very well with the fuzzy ooze but otherwise a tardigrade would fit quite well with the same backstory as what we got. But I do like what we got though I wish we got a clearer conclusion. The final battle felt kind of anti-climactic and the company being automated makes sense but would have been nice if it was stated a bit clearer. Like if the whole company is now running without any supervision then who switched the bear statue and why keep it running? Where do all the power eggs go now? Would have been cool if we got a tease in the end of the story where we would have seen some kind of factory or warehouse where all the remaining power eggs were pilling up. That would hint at a power vacuum being created in the world of Splatoon. Vacuum? Like DJ Octavio??? I'm just joking now but it would make the splatoon world feel more connected if the salmon run was taken over by the Octarians to get energy for their underground cities but idk. I would have been happy with anything more conclusive. Maybe that's left for the DLC
29:20 Honestly I understand why Rassicas hate the idea of MG being an actual bear; but they make sound like it's the absolute worst thing that can happen in the series. Frankly I find the idea of a sentient bear that cheated the end of the world and using Inkings to go on impossible missions for a quick meal is kinda funny. (Like Silent Hill Dog Ending Funny) The idea of a bear waking up in a fish society and having to figure out how to eat them without bringing too much attention to himself seems kinda funny. And the shady personality makes it better. (It's like that one episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog where he's in this society of sentient Banana people and the main villain/ruler was a giant monkey, it just seems funny to me) Additionally, I don't think Splatoon is at that point where we can be very lore heavy or very deep in story telling yet tho Octo-Expansion was a big taste of something greater. (it is it's third entry after all) I just feel the impact of making Mr.Grizz really be an Inkling might go over people heads (given it's audience). And swapping from octopus to squid without a filler species in the middle as a main villain role just doesn't seem that innovating. (at least this early in the series). I think having a Inkling as a main villain should be held on a bit longer before it's dished out.

I think that the best way to translate Mr. Grizz would be a mix of the Japanese and English versions, like, being kind most of the time, but some times slips with hes greed and cruel side.
(written post-splat3. don’t read if you don’t want SPOILERS) until the big reveal at the end, I was straight up convinced that mr grizz was lil judd. I think lil judd resents judd so fully that it’s not out of place for him to feel that he should topple the society that judd is supporting. it’s reasonable for him, having the same memories of the professor, to feel betrayed by judd apparently not caring much about humanity anymore, even mr grizz’s dialogue in the story mode seems like it could be lil judd - his obsession with restoring some kind of “balance”, almost like he views himself as a judge for the world, an objective observer. that being said I think mr grizz’s actual identity was handled pretty well, even if he was a “bear” (I don’t think he counts as one any more. by the time you get to him he’s very clearly been totally replaced by ooze. it’s a ship of theseus thing). he wasn’t there to go extinct but he knew about all of it, and instead of venturing into and embracing the new world like the judds did, he clung uselessly to the past. I think it’s an interesting parallel, and the more I think about his story, the more I genuinely really enjoy the direction it went
re: the bear thing. it’s definitely disappointing at first. all this for him to be an animal that’s been stated to be extinct? and then he fucking melts and you’re left to piece together that whatever mr grizz *was*, it’s long gone now. in present he’s a shambling mess of old ideologies held together by pure spite, probably not even really “alive” in a technical sense. n I think that’s rad as hell. also opens up dlc villain to be inkling-related! personally, I hope we get something about #9, but I don’t think they’ll ever directly address him, unfortunately.

Illicitly acquired spoilers (and discussion thereof) below It appears that Mr. Grizz _is_ indeed a bear...but could possibly only be a bear in appearance. He's referred to as the "Ursine Anomaly", dissolves into a mass of Fuzzy Ooze to "teleport" a la the four Blight Ganons, and Cap'n Cuttlefish refers to him as being "filled with Fuzzy Ooze." The fact that he's bipedal, has a tiny head in comparison to the rest of his titanic body, has blobs of Fuzzy Ooze leak from him like a water balloon sometimes, and has glowing eyes further cement this. My guesses are that he's either a regular bear driven mad by Fuzzy Ooze like Black Bowser, or he's just a shambling mass of Fuzzy Ooze that only _looks_ like a bear. It's hinted by the developers that the "Mr. Grizz" telling your team what to do in the field is just a set of prerecorded lines and text to speech software, so if we end up krilling--er, _killing_ him in the end, that's how we'll still be able to take on Salmon Run.
According to the log you get from the extra level after beating him, it would seem that Mr. Grizz was originally a normal bear that became intelligent from still being semi conscious while frozen for thousands of years and having a *lot* of time to think about things as a result. Since he later absorbed a bunch of the fuzzy ooze to become what we fight in game, I get the feeling that his plan was a suicide mission from the start. That *he* was the rocket's payload which would scatter the ooze over the Earth.
You forgot Jelonzo from the first game who never came back in the second or anywhere else, they were replaced with Jelfonzo. I’m joking but still practically every character except Jelonzo came back.
The thing is though that Jelfonzo is his son (and hasn't returned in Splat 3,) and Jel la Fleur is also a jellyfish with a weird way of speaking Basically Jelonzo isn't there because he's just the first in a line of jellyfish that replace the last one for each game, him returning would be redundant

If ink weapons are regulated for competition, and not as powerful as they can be made, imagine an inkling war. Inkstrikes that can kill everyone in a city and leave all the structures and resources unharmed, ripe for the taking. Chilling.
Personally I'd like Grizz to be an Inkling or Octoling, but like one from a different part of the world and/or based on a different species of squid/octopus, in order to preserve the exotic/Japanese restaurant run by someone who isn't Japanese theme. Maybe like a vampire squid to tie in with the evil laugh sound and the theme of stealing energy from other creatures. Or a mimic octopus disguised as a bear lol

Cool fact bears (specifically grizzlies and polar bears) are good swimmers and they could have survived the great flood. Maybe Mr. Griz is hanging out somewhere and he wants to raise golden eggs so he can eat Goldies and other bosses.

According to the recent Nintendo Direct where Story mode info was revealed; the 2 cats were the only known mammals (or at least, land-based ones) still alive up until the Splatoon 3 Story mode. So, Mr. Grizz could still be a bear, though it is less likely. Also, I do hope we get Salmon Run in Splatoon 3, or at least something similar to replace it.
Maybe someone survived the crash of ark polaris? and when formulating a plan was inspired by all the bear iconography near the crash site? I know its a big stretch but its likely the ship was a last effort to preserve human life on earth, so obviously you'd have as many precautions to make sure the passengers survive a worst case scenario right??

Another amazing video, you somehow managed to cover all we know about about Grizz and touched on all of the major fan theories I've seen. I can only imagine how long it must have taken to have scripted, recorded and edited something of this quality and your videos remain as the holy grail to the splatoon lore community. (honestly I wouldn't put it past Nintendo for Grizz to be an actual bear)
But all and all, I think having Mr. Grizz be a regular old Inkling is a super boring idea? You treat predictability as it if it was a bad thing, but I honestly think execution is the key. “Grounded ideas” don’t have to sacrifice creativity. As I think I’ve already commented in your pool ages ago, I still would much rather have him be a Bear at the end of the day - and especially now that Splatoon 3’s second trailer is out, the idea seems to make more and more sense.
Quick side note, while we haven't seen dolphins or orcas, all cetaceans produce milk and are aquatic mammals that would fit the Splatoon world just fine. As far as Mr. Grizz being an actual bear goes, that could make plenty of sense, we already have Judd as an example of a mammal, and Grizz could be a descendent of bears that were on Polaris. But also, Inkopolis has plenty of mammal statues around like Tanuki's and Foxes, so they clearly use these creatures for iconography a lot.
The golden eggs are very likely just stronger power eggs, and are much easier to harness the power of. Seeing as the salmon bosses carry these, it is likely that they are easier to draw power from and run those clanky machines.
I never even considered the possibility that he was a bear. The name Mr Grizz went completely over my head. I never played the map with the tracks either. Since it is common knowledge that all mammals are extinct, I never even considered the possibility. Also, I thought the radio looked like that because it wasn't some official company radio. It was just a radio they found second hand or something, contributing to the sketchy appearance of the business. - SPLATOON 3 SPOILERS - I think the way they handled it in game was great. It caught me completely off guard because, like I said, the possibility never crossed my mind. There were a few questions left unanswered, but I think it was done well. Definitely a lot better than videos like this predicted it would be. I mean, he wasn't *just* a bear.
Since Tartar (16:48) is an AI, wouldn't it be possible that it stored its data somewhere else before going on such a dangerous mission such as destroying all of Inkopolis? A backup would make sense, since there are provenly many different Inkling societies to be destroyed, so it would make sense if Tartar (simultaneously to Octo Expansion) operated in different destinations, too, I suppose. Meaning Tartar wouldn't be dead, his code would still live on _somewhere_ else
