100% correct, Datch. If somebody's going for a degree in either Hospitality or Event Management, Fyre is an excellent example of how to fuck everything up, lose all financial support and dignity, and look like a complete ass on television while lying about it all and attempting to place blame elsewhere. It really was a wonderful little shitshow.

I have a friend that's been going to Burning Man off and on since the 90s. The stories she tells about it are genuinely amazing. It sounds like it used to be mainly for people who understood the spirit of the festival and would come together to work through things, party, and experience that sense of community. Then the price point to go got ridiculous and it started attracting more opportunistic types that used it to network about their "disruptive" tech ideas and treat it like Coachella in the desert. The stories she tells from the 90s and early 2000s festivals compared to more modern ones are like night and day.

Yeaaaaars back there was an Aussie festival called Heatwave, started by a local dude who liked rapping in an American accent. It was meant to be a dusk-'til-dawn weekend, but they situated it near a retirement home. So the cops kept being called and it turned into 2pm-'til-9pm. Then D12, the headliner, didn't show up. Then they ran out of food and drinks to sell by day two of three. Then one of the acts decided to just have his DJ play a set instead. Then it rained on the last day and flooded everything out. Then while the festival was in another state after, Kid Cudi got pissed off and started wrecking shit. Then a while later, the promoter-rapper-guy was thrown off stage by the Insane Clown Posse. Then a while after that, Xzibit threw a chair at him back stage and it was on TMZ for a bit. Good times.

Edit: Also forgot, after D12 bailed he said that anyone who kept their Heatwave wrist-band would get free entry when he'd be able to get them down here for a show. He eventually did...like...five years later. Asked him 'bout the free entry with the wrist-band I'd kept, caught him off guard...got blocked haha. It was the most grueling work for a kid who thought it would be a nice way to make a little bit of money. Story Time from an old head: Look up Sasquatch 2006. It's a a large 3-day festival that still happens at the Gorge in Washington state that goes over the Memorial Day weekend (an end of May US holiday for military fellatio and kinda summer primer). Basically what happened at the Hudson Project happened at this Sasquatch. During the day on Saturday a storm hit, it hailed 25-30mm diameter stones and then dumped rain. The lightening and thunder during Iron and Wine people ignorantly cheered for, including the myself as the acid started creeping. I think Nico Case was who was playing when the storm and the acid started revving. People were crowded under the umbrellas and parasols people brought for the sun. There were streams soaking our feet, the entire general area was a lake. There was no warning, as it was during the flip phone era, and they didn't tell the crowd they were allowed to leave and comeback to change or something, not over the sound system or anything just "get under cover away from electronics". We left just because we were going to catch pneumonia (which many people that stuck it out got sick), so we were stoked we got to come back to see the Flaming Lips. The over square mile campground was a muddy mess, our tent and bedding was flooded, and all of the port-o-potties overflowed. We got back to the amphitheater when the shins were ending and I was beginning to peak on my acid when Ben Harper fucked us all over. Tons of people were on drugs and it turned a little into a riot that night after Ben Harper cut in the set list before the Flaming Lips and cut into their set time by noodling on his guitar over the time limit. I meant to peak during the Lips but Harper fucked that up, and it wasn't just me. There was even an "I, anonymous" article in the Seattle Stranger called "Fuck You Ben Harper" the week after the festival. Anyway, the next day the whole campground was still a disaster. Me and my girlfriend at the time gave up sleeping in the tent after 4hrs freezing, went to the nearest hotel we could find in Ellensburg and slept the whole morning and then went to go see Beck that afternoon/early evening. Beck had the most fucked up set without the storm. He'd start a song and then just trail off in the middle, set that guitar down while the band confusingly stopped and Beck would start another song and he'd trail off in the middle... it happened a bunch of times. The bassist, seemingly sick of this, presumably because this wasn't the first time, slammed his bass down screaming "FUCK IT" with all the bass strings clanging and the set ended. Weirdest shit ever. Anyway, it'd be amusing if you did that festival if this is a new series. It really was just about as much of a disaster as the Hudson Project. So I watched some videos of the storm and the hail was more like 10-15mm it looked like. Funny how many people were laughing during the hail, and then when they all realized they were cold and soaked, the gravity of the situation starts to hit and they start looking a little helpless. I think all of us went through that range of emotions that day.

The Fyre tickets weren't 12 thousand dollars, they were 12 HUNDRED. The media tacked an extra zero on somewhere along the line. At at that pricepoint, all that shit for barely over a grand is not just a decent deal, its outright stupid cheap. And also not at all possible.

one thing that always bothered me about the reaction to Fyre was how media latched onto the ticket prices and made it a whole "these millennials and nepo babies and rich kids" thing. Like, yeah, some of those tickets are fucking wild but three grand for (what was supposed to be) high-end accommodation, transportation, food AND a music festival in the Bahamas for you and three mates? That is a deal that's also affordable even if you're not the son of a CEO. Im from Upstate NY and in 2019 someone tried to organize a woodstock event in Watkins Glen, which is a fairly small city. They listed like over 100 artists over 3 days on 3 stages. People started to crunch the numbers of performance times and the consider how small Watkins Glen is, and lets just say most locals figured out quick that it wasn't going to happen.

I went to The Hudson Project and other than the last day being cancelled, it was one of my top favorite festivals I've ever attended. The line-up was next-level and incredibly diverse, the vibes were amazing, and everyone sliding down the giant mudslide was one of my most memorable festival moments. Shout out to the guy who was butt naked sliding around in the mud. Only downside was the police presence. It was especially weird watching 3 police officers on horses walk right by my campsite while I was in a k hole Edit: One thing to add is that it started pouring down in the middle of Big Gigantic's performance. But then after a while, the rain had suddenly stopped and there was a beautiful rainbow right over the stage. Seeing that while they performed was one of the most beautiful moments of my life

Should also add Blue Ridge Rock Festival that occurred over the weekend of September 8th in 2023 in Virginia. What a CF that turned out to be! I've heard stories of people being stuck in traffic for 13 hours for that. And of course, the weather (it was extremely hot and humid that weekend, then thunderstorms). Thankfully, even though where the BRRF was held was only a little over an hour or so from where I live, I was in Atlanta at ProgPower USA (a festival that is extremely well run) instead.

Woodstock 99: Maybe some security guards didn't let in food and drink, but we carried in 5 one gallon water jugs (one filled entirely with vodka), as well as a large flashlight full of drugs. They definitely prohibited outside alcohol (and drugs obviously), but didn't really give af. I was 19 at the time, and that was one of my all time favorite festivals/adventures. The band lineups were amazing by 1999 standards, and maybe it was the gallon of vodka and drugs, but my friends and I had a fantastic time. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Edit: Something that all the Woodstock 99 documentaries miss is that there were tons of unofficial "vendors" in the parking areas, which were outside the admission gates and pretty uncontrolled. Attendees could come and go freely. So we bought water and mystery meat on a stick from out there. Much cheaper than the vendors inside. Also, you could go sit/sleep in ur car to get away from the heat and chaos.. or could just go out to drink/etc and come back in.

I used to work security for festivals and you could do a whole video on just them. The shit I used to see when working security, I once saw an 18 year old get jumped by 3 men all easily over 35-40 years old because he had a single dose of Molly on him and I mean jumped. They laid into him and when I tried getting them off I was threatened despite being a fellow member of security. I love music festivals but the security teams can absolutely ruin one one their efforts alone.

Went to a good few Scottish middle-aged hippy festivals as an older kid/teen. For obvious reasons, they were pretty chill. It was really boring for an introverted nerd who doesn't like loudness, but it felt safe (besides tent pegs). Wildest thing that happened in my presence was my dad being given what he thought was a line of coke to deal with a hangover, but it was, in fact, probably special K. Except, I didn't know about that at all, so I had no idea and thought it was just "con flu". Not a great morning for him.

In the first few iterations it was struck by bad weather, consequentially, there was tons of mud and combine that with alcohol, even mud can be fun. I think it was 2000 when it was sunny and warm all the time, but there was a problem. People wanted mud! The organizer called Fire department and they brought water to make a mud puddle. It became a tradition and it led to developement of various games in mud, Miss Wet T-shirt............

I dont know if anyone has mentioned the legendary terrible Bull Island music festival, which happened in the middle of nowhere on the border of Indiana and Illinois in September 1972. Had a lot of the same problems Woodstock 99 did, plus bands not showing or skipping out. Three people drowned, the stage was torched, and being the early 70s there were "so many drugs the cows got high."

Blue Ridge Rock Festival 2023 in Virginia. Truly one of the worst-managed festivals ever. A four-day festival that shut down a day and a half early after a vicious thunderstorm on the first day and a near-complete lack of water, toilets, and pretty much everything except massively overpriced food. The festival supposedly shut down in the middle of the third day because "the threat of severe weather"...what actually happened is that the staff working at the venue (Virginia International Raceway) walked out en masse. Oh, and there weren't enough shuttle buses and the parking was 5 miles away so it was taking literally eight hours to get people to their cars in the middle of a torrential thunderstorm.

I was at Burning Man '23 and yeah it wasn't as bad on the inside as the reporting made it seem. All our families thought we were dying and we were just chilling and lamenting the fact that we couldn't really leave our camp like we wanted to. Everyone brings more than enough food and water so we were never in danger of running out, and thankfully the portos only went like a day and a half before they got pumped again. We had to stay one more day than we had planned, but all things considered it wasn't too bad! Our camp did decide to take next year off though 😂

I was at Burning Man 2023. Going into Burning Man you MUST be ready for harsh conditions and radical survival. It has always been disclaimed. You are expected to take care of yourself from water to food and shelter. So yes it got muddy this yea and it was AMAZING. This was my 3rd burn and by far my favorite. DO NOT go to Burning Man if you're expecting easy conditions and to be taken care of. It is NOT a festival. It is a social happening, a city made by the participants who work hard to make it happen. No one is creating all of this so a bunch of sparkle pony festival rats could just roll in in their lux RVs, take in everything everyone else put out there, and then give nothing back but whiney complaints about how their experience was ruined. This rain was actually a good thing. It is going to prevent the likes of these whimps and influencers from coming back to the burn and we want that. I can't wait for next year, rain or shine

I wouldn't honestly call a festival of peace and love being held on a former or current military base to be ironic, its quite a symbolic statement to repurpose something once used for the thing you are against for a better purpose. Such as a military base for something peaceful and entertaining, or a road for a public gathering space.
