In sail days everything was waterproofed with pine tar or pitch, handling the rigging made your hands black. For that reason naval salutes are executed palm in, showing an officer the "black hand" was considered an infraction.

Good info! I've got a dead pine tree (lightning storm five yrs ago) close by - is that wood still usable? What indicators should I look for?
@Dominic.Minischetti
@Dominic.Minischetti 4 года назад
D & R Z That all depends what you are trying to get out of it. There should be fatwood down in the stump and crotches of the limbs. As far as any usable wood for carving, that would depend on if it dry rotted or not. I hope this helps!

I have found several people saying that sap and resin are two entirely different things; That resin/pitch is the hard stuff secreted by the tree's outer layer and sap is the liquid that comes from inside. I'm very confused, is sap and resin the same thing?
@Dominic.Minischetti
@Dominic.Minischetti 4 года назад
Autumn Galix I consider sap the liquid watery substance. It’s the sugars from a tree. Resin is the thick liquid the the tree heals itself with. But I could be wrong! Lol!

Hello, I have a question if anyone can help. I found cut branches of pine tree, and wanted to make some kind of indoor shelves for my cat. We started to take of the tree bark and it's still sticky. Should i give up or is there a way how to treat wood so it won't be sticky, what to use to coat, paint over? Thank you
@Dominic.Minischetti
@Dominic.Minischetti 3 года назад
Hi! You won’t be able to get rid of the resin. You really can’t paint over it either. It’s best to find another piece without resin. I’m sorry, it’s probably not what you wanted to hear.
