The march of marriage equality

The US Supreme Court struck down states' same-sex marriage bans on June 26, effectively bringing marriage equality to the entire US. Watch it sweep the United States over the last 11 years. For more on the decision on Vox.com: www.vox.com/2015/6/26/8823655/...
"No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family," Justice Anthony Kennedy, who joined the court's liberals in the majority opinion, wrote. "[The challengers] ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right."

Jerod Call I disagree. Hate wins -- every day. Just pay a visit to Palestine or a broken African state. I am of course talking about the people in the upper echelons of political and military power. Hegemony, greed, fear, genocide, torture, exploitation; this is the world we live in, one full of evil. The good cannot triumph because the evil hold too much power. So in the bigger picture? Love can't win, because in truth love is weakness. The tank is stronger than the open hand, and the desire for wealth will drive a powerful man mad. He can have as much as he wants, and no justice will be brought to him, at least not in this life.

Why do people have to bring up God and the Bible. We were born this way, we didn't choose to live like this. I know that God loves us all now matter what we are. Since we were born this way, God created us this way for a reason. I can't imagine God to be displeased for who we are. We are all made to Gods image and God does not make mistakes. Love is love and we are not different. I know God is with us, and I am happy for who I am, there should not be shame because we are all equal and human beings.

1 corintios 6:9-11 here we see that the cortinthians had homosexuals in their mix. Now paul didnt say anything about then changing their way of thinking but their actions. The bible does not disapprove homosexual thoughts and feelings. It disapproves when u act upon them. If it seems too impossible to have homosexual feeling and not act on them. Well thats why 2 corintios 4:7 says god gives us power beyond what is normal. Im not judging anyone. Everyone can choose their own decisions. Im just giving the bibles point of view

Miguel Jasso Actual bible scholars - that is, the people who study the scriptures from an historical perspective (and to do that, you must be able to read Greek), within the backdrop of what was going on culturally and politically, have serious doubts about the authenticity of many of Paul's "works". (www.huffingtonpost.com/john-dominic-crossan/apostle-paul-letters_b_890387.html) also see: ehrmanblog.org/forgeries-in-the-name-of-paul/ 1Timothy, for example, which contains much of the misogynist attributed to Paul, is almost universally rejected by biblical scholars as a forgery. In point of fact, Paul's sect was far more egalitarian that many other fledgling sects of his day. Therefore, what he says about women not having positions of authority nor teaching men just jive with how we know he ran his church. That having been said, the documents that actually "made it" into the New Testament should be considered in a few lights: 1. There were many, many so-called gospels floating around at the time of the first council of Nicea. This is when the church fathers got together to decide what books would make it into the official bible and what docs would be excluded. First be aware that any document that depicted the Magdalene as an Apostle was automatically removed from consideration, we were any gospels or teachings authored by women. Yes, the early church was surprisingly egalitarian and welcoming, But as it became more organized, it also embraced the myth of female inferiority. 2. Not ONE was written contemporaneously. Not one of the authors can claim to have been an eye witness. In fact, most of them were written generations AFTER the so-called Jesus' life. 3. There is absolutely no historical evidence that Jesus ever lived outside of the people who wrote chapters in the bible. And even those people were not there at the time and therefore are recounting what they were told. 4. There isn't ONE independent. first hand account of the life of Jesus. Not one. This is a man who supposedly performed miracles in front of vast crowds and yet no one thought to record these astounding events? How is that possible? ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: A. Why is that relevant? Because the weight of evidence as actually AGAINST the notion that Jesus ever lived. You have a 2000+ year old book of cultural myths as your ammunition to deny the human dignity of real human beings... B. You are assuming that just bc Christianity has been the predominant religion and has had the power to call the shots for everyone, that it will continue to be so. Can you please explain that assumption? The US has the 1at Amendment which provides for freedom OF religion as much as freedom FROM RELIGION. Try as they might, opponents of SSM cannot come up with a secular reason to deny SSM. Allowing the govt (state or federal) govt. to impose Judeo-Christian morals on the populous via the institution of marriage sounds an awful lot like establishment of religion.

@@jeffreyjdesir Okay, since you say there are, can you show us an example of arguments against gay marriage so you can validate your point?
@jeffreyjdesir
@jeffreyjdesir 5 лет назад
@@purplelemon3987 marriage, in principle, is a religious institution . that's not to say two consenting adults shouldn't be allowed to combine their taxes and live together, but historically this had the implicit expectation to bare children with your spouse; thus tax cuts and benefits would give incentive for the family unit. Procreation, in principle, is impossible between same sex couples. So, in the eyes of the Church, a union between two or more people of the same sex with no capacity to procreate is blasphemous; to us secular folk, it at the very least subverts the definition and purpose of marriage as defined in the Bible. Now, this doesn't mean therefore we can't change the definition and move on with life, but we have to acknowledge that the institution itself comes from a religion, Christianity. Whose definition is superior? With seperation of church and state, marriage should have devolved into a generic Union (like a merger between business), and nothing more. It'd then be appropriate to coin a new term for this union; as the original word bares different meaning. For example, the Hijab in Islam represents modesty and submission to one's husband and God; enforceable by stoning and shame. If (and it has actually) secular middle Easterners decided to morph the hijab into a sign of woman's liberation, would this be correct (or, would opposition to this from religious leaders be unwarranted?). It's a cultural artifact. To embody another culture is one thing, but to completely redefine it on par with it's origins and still practiced intentions is simply a conversation not being had. Having spoken with pastors on this issue, to claim that anyone who disagrees with gay marriage must be bigoted is a lie. The fact is, in the eyes of religion, marriage between two men or two woman is theologically impossible, and so rightfully not recognized. That matters. We need to agree on definitions in order to have a working society. Many religious folk say an alternate name and convention for unions like this would be fine. But a church has no business administrating a gay marriage. To do so would render all religious belief meaningless.

@@purplelemon3987 as a bisexual man, I couldn't care less, but I recognize how often the media spins their opposition as immoral and close minded (even today). The "fight" for gay marriage should have been a philosophical and societal discussion of values, and untill we all agree rationally what it means to be a good lover, spouse, parent and mentor, faithful, etc (as the Bible lays out in modern interpretation of scripture), this issue won't be put to rest.

And just bc you're feeling are hurt (I have no idea how and why) you don't want us to show to the world how happy we are? NH, a state that once banned LGBT people from adopting kids, even our own relatives. Back then: If my brother & his wife were killed in a car accident, even thought their will specified I was to raise their kids, NH state law forbade that. So my brother's kids would by law be forced into foster homes, even though the law was supposed to be about what's best for the kids!! (Unless, of course, brave social service workers defied an overtly unconstitutional law) 0:30: "I'm glad that my parents are getting married..." (Tears!)
