Finally we reach the end of the line with our series following Falcon across the Atlantic BUT there is one important last step- getting her hauled out. This proves to be the most nerve-wracking part of the whole affair as the travel lift proves to be a tight fit!
With a little help from our friends at East River Marine Boat Yard in Nova Scotia we make the impossible possible and get our first proper look at Falcon out of the water.
Who is the Mariner?
My name is Chris Stanmore-Major better known as CSM. I have over 300,000Nm experience in racing, cruising & expedition sailing and have raced twice around the world. I sailed solo around the world in the Velux 5 Oceans Race in 2011 (in Falcon's sister ship) becoming the 182nd person ever to circumnavigate alone.
This channel is for sailors of all skill levels and backgrounds. My passion is seamanship & self reliance and helping others realize their sailing dreams on their own boats - whatever size or shape of craft that may be.

I love the keel box hole! My dad and I toyed with buying 2 cruising boat hulls ( from the place I was working at the time) and putting them in a holes in the back garden to fit out and save all that ladder time and effort , (2 hulls because the most time is the thinking time so the second boat would go quick at same time and then sell it to help pay for the first one). Cheers Warren

Loved the series Chris, especially all the technical stuff, thanks for sharing. Your enthusiasm is inspiring. One question; you mentioned sailing 30/35 degrees off the wind in an earlier video, i'm guessing that's the apparent wind?

It looks like the dagger boards as you said canted out and also seem to have a slight angle of attack or just my imagination, I wonder if they are designed to aid in lift and reduce drag. I would be curious to know if the designers had this in mind as an early precursor to high lift wing on the later designs. I also believe the fin on newly designed canting keels can also incorporate angle of attack for lift to reduce wet surface induced drag.

Hello Christ, In your presentation at BYC you talk about your ballast problem (explosion), I understand the problem was on this boat( Vellux) you brought back to Canada, but in your video series you don't talk about it. I could see the water scene in your old intro. In the ballast video no.7, we can see that the ballast have air vent, water overflow, on the deck. My question: How can you break a ballast tank when there is those vent (water overflow)? Thanks
@CSMtheMariner
@CSMtheMariner Год назад
ah late but here I am with an answer! the problem is the vents on deck (of the boat that had the problem) were much smaller than the incoming hoses from the water scoops. this plus the pressure of filling the tanks at q-knots meant there was just too much pressure and no where for it to go…

This has been a brilliant series , thanks so much.i jumped ahead a little and will go back and get a couple of videos I missed. Did you know you sound and talk just like Will Button , who is a reporter and total Formula one nut. ( or he like you). Cheers Warren

Having the keel well is a godsend- for us its all about safety when working on deck and stability for the boat in high winds- if we had to put her in a high cradle the boat would be 21ft off the ground at the toe-rail!!

Oh ye of little faith!! There was still a good inch of clearance if you count the folds of the sail, removing the rocks on the floor of the yard and a little prayer!!

So bugger the RU-vid thing?
@CSMtheMariner
@CSMtheMariner 4 года назад
I have to admit that I lost traction with RU-vid when it appeared the interest was minimal- having received some wise constructive feedback recently I realized one important thing- I need to apply the tenacity I take onto the water to this project as well and not be so easily deflated by the slow beginnings that are normal on RU-vid. I am now ready to come back and get the Mariner in gear with 'Consistency' as the goal for 2020. Thanks for the kick in the butt.
