The Mario Movie Is A Mess 

I personally liked the movie, however I think your opinion is very valid. As always love the fact you seem to have level of respect and acknowledge the victories and faults in a soothing way.

As a movie, the Mario movie is pretty weak. The plot is very minimal, there are 0 character moments, and overall just doesn’t give you much to love at a movie standpoint. With that being said I love this movie. It’s not trying to be good “movie” movie, but rather a good “Mario” movie. It’s just… really fun to watch, that’s about it. If you’re going to watch this movie, don’t walk in expecting the next “Incredibles” or “Wall-E”. Come in expecting to just have a really fun time.

Your views on movies are about the same way I view movies. I always seem to find something I'm critical of in movies I enjoy, even in movies that are works of art like the recent Spiderverse movie. I think you put it perfect with your Chris Pratt critique. Having a lot of behind-the-scene knowledge might heighten our expectations as oppposed to the average moviegoer.

At least as a brazillian, i can say that in our language, the dub was superb. Its cool how much dub effects a movie, for us Ice Age is a magestic movie because the dubbling is amazing, i ve heard that the english version is'nt that good.

waited until i watched the film in cinemas before i watched this. dope review again! i liked the movie , thought that this story was more like 2 movies in 1. I honestly thought they were kinda gonna go mario galaxy route in the sense of being the second wreck-it-ralph movie done well with mario being able to travel to different galaxies, surprising us with a rosalina reveal as well maybe, eh maybe i hope too much.

Let me ask. If one were to play just ONE Super Mario Brothers game, how much character development do you get? You don’t really get to know Mario and Luigi until you’ve played quite a few of them. This movie, as reference packed as it is, is similar to playing one game. Yes it ties in several but take each game one by one. It takes at least 3 to figure out ANY of the motivations behind any of the characters. And Peach going from “damsel in distress” to “fully capable” was awesome to me. Considering she was a playable character in SMB 2 AND pretty bada$$ in Smash Brothers, it’s fitting for her to be as spot on as it is. Yes it’s fast paced as you have a 1.5 hour runtime but that’s when you pick and choose how deep to dive into any scene. The fact that she takes Mario with her isn’t surprising because within seconds she shows that she’s excited to see another human after being around the toads her entire life and the obstacle course she puts him through is to help him not get killed. I think they did an amazing job making a movie Mario fans would love.

this is the first movie my 6 year old son has seen fully. it is made for kids, that's why pace is like this. and the Pratt hate is long overused. I bet you that if they used the OG Mario legendary voice actor, the woke mob would have blasted the movie even more.

Man, I gotta respect this well thought out opinion. I still think the movie is one of the best video game movies out there (though it was never a high bar to jump… I guess some pun intended lol?) this critique is super solid.

The writers were going for a speedrun feeling. All part of the plan. Totally.

I get if people like the movie, I get if people don't like the movie. Both stances tend to be fine I enjoyed it enough, it was a silly dumb Mario, I mean its the Mario movie made by Illumination with songs like Take On Me in it, it has Jack Black as Bowser singing while playing a piano, and overall its a really stupid movie but I had fun with it That being said this film clearly has its notable issues such as all the characters being pretty bland and one note besides a few guilty pleasures like DK and Bowser. The pacing isnt great but like I said I had fun with it so I can accept its flaws although its still important to point them out

I think the pacing was propursefully awkward soo it looks like video game stage progression, like they sacrificed it being "ideal" soo that it can get another purpose.

Yeah, I agree with most of what you said. I still enjoyed watching this movie regardless, tho. I guess choosing the safe approach to make this movie is the best idea (by safe approach I mean not making the story too complex that it may have a plot hole that they can't solve. Or worse, making the mario's character different from what we knew, accidentally). Talking about why making it now in 2023, my guess is that the only reason they made this, is because they saw that Sonic movie works.

Mario and Luigi's brotherhood is the core of this film, Mario will do anything to save his brother. then it makes more sense that Luigi would be the one to be saved, rather than the Peach he just met. the ending is still Mario and Luigi winning the battle, not just Mario. People play mario games not for the story but for the fun, same as the film people go for the fun and nostalgia. What did you expect from a movie based on video game, when the characters jumps on turtles and smashes question blocks, Did you want him quoting shakesphere? This movie is Shigeru Miyamoto being himself, not to follow disney stupid woke agenda. This movie will join one Billion $ club this week, and this is the prove the movie on the righ track. Im so sorry but this is a bad review from the one who knows nothing about super mario. Do better research before review next time.
