😞😞ALOHA! Ummm, sorry to the TMV fans - I had NO IDEA that this was a multi-part experience. I just click on a link and go and I didn't know what kind of rabbit hole with the following tracks as it seemed to go on for about 5 more parts. My apologies. Just means that there's more to come. Have a killer weekend!! AWWWRIGHT!!
@soundmangaz

Their first two albums are journeys. Each track leads into the next, but particularly the 2nd half of this album. A lot of the themes in this track are re-visted later in the album. You owe it to yourself to listen to either of the first 2 albums from start to finish in your headphones. If that became an album reaction vid that's be cool, but do it anyway! Also, check out some of their early live videos, unbelievable live act!

This song makes me feel so incompetent as a musician. They play in and out of the keys of Em and Dm back and forth with such easy, changing the tonal center from E to D with such grace. The crazy part is that through all of this chaos, it’s all intentional and written masterfully. I had the thought I will never be able to write something to this caliber. I sound like I’m swooning which I probably am but it’s just humbling that I’m nowhere near the people I look up to.

you gotta listen to the full song. It's 32 minutes and they make complete use of the long playtime. This is their best song imo but it's also a good look at what the rest of their discography sounds like.

Making a collection of odd sounds and weird lyrics does not equal being "the greatest of all time". To every one his own.
@Gannoh

@@Scirzo Could say the same about bands like Tool. The inventiveness of the band is nothing to scoff at, Frances the Mute is a very experimental and understandably kind of hard to listen to, but their more digestable albums have just as much complexity to their riffs and lyricism. Frances The Mute is one of those albums you have to listen to in its entirety from track 1. There are sections that make a recurrence later. Large songs are broken into multiple, smaller tracks. It's my favorite Mars Volta albums. "Miranda that ghost just isn't holy anymore" is so good. "The Widow" was the single. Still. Here.

The title track ("Frances the Mute") was cut from the album, so even listening to the CD from start to finish doesn't get you the whole experience - fortunately, it was the B-side to the single for "The Widow" so it's still obtainable.

@swingonthespiral

@@neilpatrickhairless I could nerd out on the latin influences for days. I played in jazz band in high-school and Latin tunes were always my favorite. TMV uses the Cuban/Puerto Rican Guajira style on L'via L'Viaquez, and we played a guajira tune my senior year. I had to use hand separation to hold down the beat while I lifted the piano solo style from that track and I won best solo in the competition. It was awesome.

Love it! 15 years back or so when I was in my mid-twenties and frequented bars and pubs more often, they had started getting those Itunes Jukeboxes where you could put in $1 and pick any song to download off the library. My friends and I used to enjoy what we called "Jukebox Terrorism" where we would pick our favorite rock, prog, and metal tracks and completely change the vibe since most people were choosing more popular Top 40 stuff. When I saw all 30 minutes of Cassandra Gemini were counted as 1 track for $1, it became a staple in my rotation. Between that and Porcupine Tree's Anesthetize, I had that music locked down for an hour for $2!

@Bonzoso21
@Bonzoso21 2 года назад
@@Gnix1996 Haha, we were maybe not the most considerate group of guys at that age. We'd often see people around the bar reacting negatively to the music, going up to the jukebox and then getting pissed, and we thought it was hilarious. That's why we called it Jukebox Terrorism. I'm not gonna lie...at least a couple times I can remember, the staff themselves would get irritated and just disable the jukebox right in the middle of our songs in favor of whatever their basic rotation was. Cassandra Gemini would cut off during some avant garde section 20 minutes in, and here comes Sweet Caroline for the 1000th time...oh well, it was only $1!

One thing that makes this album really special is that Omar wrote all of the parts and then got each musician to practice and record separately without being allowed to hear what everyone else would be playing. Mars volta is organized chaos to me. Most of it shouldnt work, but it always does beautifully. Definitely should listen to this song in its entirety when you get a chance. Absolute brilliance!

I'm still here! I've seen one of your TMV videos a while back but just subscribed after seeing this pop up. This track is a musical journey on an album that's a musical odyssey lol! I'm glad this made you open your eyes to them even more and I guarantee you won't regret listening to the rest of their discography 👍

Tetragrammaton by TMV is probably one of the most interesting songs you'll ever hear. It is 17 minutes of progressive genius. (BTW remember Aneasthetize was also around 17 minutes and it feels like 7!) And still here brother!

I love Tetragrammaton but sometimes i feel it's toooooo messy, like there's no structure in the song. That said, what an intricate and powerful song
@Diesel_Budgie
@Diesel_Budgie 2 года назад
@ If we're talking verse-chorus-verse, of course not. It's structured more like a classical concerto or something. It's almost a circular composition with a kind of interlude in the middle - one of the best examples of classical structure in modern progressive music I can think of. Not that I'm an expert of course.
2 года назад
@@Diesel_Budgie Oh i don't have any problem with that, I was talking more about how the song is structured in a rhythmic and melodic way, if you look up the time signatures for that song or count them by yourself, it almost sounds like it doesn't fit at all, like everything is all over the place.
@Diesel_Budgie
@Diesel_Budgie 2 года назад
@ Oh I see! well you have a point there. But that's prog for you. Although, most of the song is pretty easy to follow rhythmically isn't it? Very busy but not much odd time stuff.

Thanks for revisiting TMV Geebz. They truly had a gift. Funny when I tried to get my buddy to listen to them, he was all "It's too busy.. blah blah". He now has every release by them. I think I hear the ocean waves crashing in on your breakdown pauses... love that

I'm still here! All together, it's over 30 minutes. The Mars Volta have a few that span multiple tracks like this. I'm glad you caught it for "Son Et Lumiere / Inertiatic ESP". If you do this band again, I think you'd dig "Day of the Baphomets". It's a trip.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, the guitarist and bandleader, is an absolute machine when it comes to recording. He's put out so damn many albums int eh last three decades, either in this band, At the Drive In, Antemasque, Bosnian Rainbows, or solo. And he's always doing something interesting.

Yes Geebz, finally! Thanks for bringing more TMV to the channel! Every time you listen to them you seem to get pumped and trust me, the more you dig, the more you'll dig them. The Mars Volta are not for the faint of heart, but they are so rewarding, especially if you're into Latin Jazz Fusion Punk Prog Rock! And who isn't? I'm still here, and I'll live here if you do more The Mars Volta!
