This concert in 2005 featured the original lead singer of the Marvelettes, Gladys Horton(1944-1/26/2011) performing her 1961 hit "Please Mr. Postman". Please note,the singers who are backing her are NOT original members of the Marvelettes. Funk Brothers Jack Ashford (tamborines)and Joe Hunter (keyboards) are seen playing with her.
1/27/11 NOTE: Gladys Horton passed away at age 66 in a nursing home in Sherman Oaks, California where she had been recouperating from a stroke on January 26, 2011. While her voice has been stilled, her singing will live on with her fans here and abroad and will always be a part of the musical fabric that made up the Motown Sound. Thank you, Gladys. God Bless and take your rest.

Unbeleivable!!! Gladys sound the same or just as she did back in the 60's!!! Why,Why Did Barry Gordy trash so many Motowns artist that deserved much more credit than those Supremes, whom Diana SLEPT her mousy way into that studio...

She is killin it and so is the background vocals. The lead vocal sounds live because you can hear different ab libs than on the original record. The background vocals may be from the original track. Either way, love this.

She appears to be lipsynching to her younger vocals/ I know Martha Reeves had to do it on this show as well...that is why no close ups are permitted/ She however will always be one of the all time greats/ Too bad sometimes father time eats away at our gifts. I will always love her contributions to the soundtrack of our lives!

The ONLY live part she did was at :50 - :54! The rest was her lip syncing her own voice from early 1961. There is nothing wrong with that either. Gladys has and always will have a near and dear hold on my heart. The Marvelettes will always be forever more!

She sounds great and looks great, too. Never got heavy as the years passed. A very tough childhood--orphan passed from foster home to foster home-and very tough years as a mother to a needy child she was known to care for with the utmost responsibility and love. Motown made lots of many with her and recorded her on hundreds of songs but she left realizing Motown had turned its attentions elsewhere, regardless of what she had done for the company.

Like many of you, I would like to believe she was singing live, but I honestly believe she is lipsynching as well. I played the original along with this one, and aside from the speed of this version of the song, the vocals are identical.

Golden gems remembered and recorded in time. It's so sad to hear how them and other artists were mistreated at Motown. The ladies were the blueprint and trendsetters who gave Motown their first hit. These ladies rarely get their flowers for being one of the first pioneering girl groups at Motown. This music is timeless still to this day.

@ladymuziklover Really now? I'm pickin? Well, WHO brought this CRAP Up??? The performance here was SPEEDED UP for the Stage. If she were Lip-Synching? Wouldn't Gladys sound like Minnie Mouse/Diana Ross? And, maybe Mz. Horton requested NO CLOSE-UPs for reasons of "Vanity"? She wouldn't be the 1st woman in show-biz Guilty of PROTECTING HER WRINKLES? Also, maybe Gladys voice was STRONGER than Martha Reeves, Diana Ross & Aretha because her voice was Seldom USED due to FAKE MARVELETTES Performing?

@zodiolestes it looks like u need anger management bcuz all i did was make a statement..if u don't agree w/it, it don't bother me..fyi - i am not jealous of ms horton cuz i dont need to be & i am a fan of the marvalettes music but i can hear well & know a lip synched performance versus a true live one..and "a pregnant moose" - really? if u callin some1 that, u must know how it is to be 1..lastly, did u verbally harass the person who agreed w/me? clearly, u jus need to chill out & that's that

I think it's live. The single is a bit slower & the old live recordings are much faster. Gladys makes a few slight rhythmic errors that would have been fixed if it were pre-recorded.
@ladymuziklover

ms horton seems to be lip-synching here bcuz her voice is distinctly different at 0:51 to 0:53 than at every other part of the song when she's singing

Gladys Horton and Wanda Young alternated on taking leads until Gladys had to leave the group to take care of her disabled son. Please Mr. Postman, Twistin Postman, Playboy, Too Many Fish In The Sea, My Daddy Knows Best, Beachwood 4-5789, A Little Bit Of Sympathy, You're My Remedy, Paperboy all lead by Gladys Horton... read your Motown & Marvelettes biographies

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but Gladys was purely lip syncing to her original recording from 1961. I have heard the original version multiple times and can easily pick it up here. The audio is merely sped up to stay equal with the fast tempo, and, as another user pointed out, her actual voice from this performance could briefly be heard at around the 0:52 mark. I would have rather heard her real voice in this performance.

I did not see ONE spot where her lip 'synching' was bad! She was 'on it' when they DID show her! Plus, how could it be, she still works live and sings this song all the time! She 'knows' how she sings it! And this is 'GOOD' regardless of 'what'!

Good to see Gladys here on PBS. And i was glad to see Gladys on the New Year's Rockin Eve show back in the 1980s. In 1996 she performed at Caesars Palace Las Vegas inside the casino. I was happy for her. It was a real pleasant surprise. She performed well and she kept her smile.

It is a very rare treat to see one of the original Motown superstars still able to excite with her voice. What is sad is when groups such as the "Four Tops" and "The Temptations" appear and there is one or even no original founding members left. Gladys Horton has my respect and along with her bandmartes, holds a place of honor on my 2,000 plus vinyl record shelf and turntable any day!
