Actually it's not. The movie is flawed and I rock with Christy on most things but she is doing too much here. It feels as if she went into this movie in a bad mood and took it out on the film in the review. When she says the film has zaps and space lasers....well yes and.....you have seen her in 3 or 4 previous films. Not our first go round with these characters. What really got me, was her out of theater review when she told people to not go see the film. Really sis, it wasn't that bad. You can say it wasn't for me but to promote not seeing the film is nonsense.
Totally agree. Seems like she went into it intending to hate it. To overlook Kamala and her family as a bright enough spot to create some interest is a perfect example of haters gonna hate.
This movie was so much fun for me. I appreciate the criticism in this video because it’s not bent but I loved it. I would watch it again for that first fight scene, training montage, and the flurken scene alone! Those 3 scenes were so good and the chemistry between the leads made up for the lackluster villain
The Cats movie was so bad it’s good! I would love to see regular midnight showings of Cats the way certain theaters keep bringing back Little Shop of Horrors.
@@FameyFamousI think they did that when the movie came out. I guess it wasn't as popular as the other movie you mentioned otherwise it would still go on.
#1 Carol becoming a Princess is also a reference to her sometimes fan nickname, “Princess Sparklefist.” #2 In the comics, Binary is a form that Carol takes after Rogue saps her of Carol’s Kree powers (giving Rogue what remain to this day are her default powers, flight, strength, etc), other than her actual mutant power, power sapping. #3 Maria was absolutely wearing the original Binary costume that she started wearing while recuperating at the Xavier Institute, after she got a second power set (closer to her MCU powers). Binary was the second of Carol’s four main superhero IDs, after Ms. Marvel in the 1970s, and before Warbird (2000s) and Captain Marvel (2010s and ongoing). #4 That wasn’t Kelsey Grammar in makeup - that was a CGI Beast that incorporated Grammar’s face and voice. #5 You didn’t mention it, but the “bangles” are the MCU appropriation of the Nega-Bands from the comics which Rick Jones and Mar-Vell used for a few years (early 1970s) to swap places in our reality and the Negative Zone (first introduced in FF). Rick Jones is arguably the most glanced over character of anyone of Silver Age Marvel. Rick was the teenager Bruce Banner was saving when he first became the Hulk, he was the leader of the teen ham enthusiasts that brought together the Avengers in Avengers #1, and he was even Captain America’s sidekick and temporary new Bucky for a while. But… all of that is gone in the MCU. Kevin Feige really hates Rick Jones !
I too really enjoyed the odd ball sections and wanted more of that after seeing what could have been. Also, I thought early in the movie the rapport between our lead characters had something going for it especially with the Ms Marvel stuff, but lost it as the movie progressed. Finally and you didn’t mention this, but the bad guy was kind of weak and more of she’s kind of got a point than truly bad. Anyway the oddball parts got me to a I didn’t hate it level of entertainment.
Binary was actually one of the iterations of Carol Danvers after her powers were stolen by Rogue. In this universer, it seems like Maria Rambeau actually got the Capt Marvel powers instead of Carol Danvers.
Brie delivered a stronger performance in this film compared to the first one, though it's not high praise for an average movie. If anything, The Marvels left me craving more of Kamala Khan's presence.
I don't understand why everyone is getting so down on this movie. I enjoyed it. I didn't notice the special effects looking bad. The musical scene and the cat scene were awesome. I thought it was fun when Valkyrie, Kate Bishop, Maria Rambeau & Beast showed up. I thought the practicing switching places while Intergalactic by Beastie Boys played was fun. I don't think I am a super fanboy either. There has been a couple of Marvel movies and TV shows that I did not like, but I wouldn't call The Marvels one of them. I guess I'm in the minority here though.
The bar for superhero movies has been raised exponentially; movies like The Marvels, The Flash, Shazam 2 etc cant cut it anymore. Its also not fair to expect your audience to watch dozens of hours of programming just to keep up with all the characters in your new movie
It's tanking at the box office so far, and I couldn't be happier. Martin Scorsese says the plethora of comic book movies are a danger to our culture, and I agree with him wholeheartedly.
Rooting for a movie to fail that so many ppl have worked on is real classy. Btw, that would be the same Scorsese whose own $200m movie won't gross $100m domestically & will barely gross $150m worldwide?!
Is it though. 47 million is about 10 to 20 million less then winter soldier and other films made when Marvel was peaking. Seems like 10 to 20 million would be the estimate. Although i'm sure their estimate is a billion or something, but 47 seems pretty good for a film not received that well by critics.
@@AllInTheGame01 I don't give a damn how many people have worked on it. The more these vacuous comic book films fail to draw an audience, the happier I am.
This has been such a waste of Brie Larson's time and talents. She turned down I'm Thinking of Ending Things and God knows what else to serve Marvel. Maybe now she can get back to making art.
Wasn’t there a storyline or rumor out there at one point, where Valkyrie would team up with Captain Marvel and potentially become a significant other? I would find that story much more intriguing, than what we’ve gotten out of Captain Marvel so far.
Comic book universes don't typically have gay people unless they're sadistic scheming lesbians or maybe bisexual women who are extremely sexually suggestive and usually talk like Mae West, male villains who just coincidentally happen to be effeminate, or long established characters who are suddenly written gay so the cisgender heterosexual writers don't have to bother with conceiving of marginalized characters with that experience in mind or hire queer creators to do same; so I wouldn't hold my breath
I agree. The whole Aladna scene's were ultimately a waste. Did Aladna even make it alright after Dar Ben stole their water? I wanted more of the lore, why were Yin? and Carol even married.
thanks for bringing up Memory, I have it playing now, the original 1981, and it's quite good, a throwback when I was but a wee lad sat in the back of dad's green BMW in the eighties, playing on cassette
Kamala and her family were the highlights of this movie for me. Many of the other characters were good too. I’ll give the movie a 6 for action and montage and good characters. My score would have been higher if they had tried to write a plot.
Also the bulbs on the projector were darker. Made the film atmosphere pop i guess. Modern overpriced projector too bright. Makes everything look laptop effectsy. A la...takes you out of it as christie says.
Everyone is trashing on the CG Beast but I thought he looked fine. I was okay with the cats, but the singing planet was too Love and Thunder silliness like Thor doing the split that I could have done without. If the singing ed to a better musical number I might be more happy. But it was thrown in without leading to much of anything which was disappointing. Overall, I enjoyed the movie. Could it be better especially the backstory and some more emotional beats.
I don't watch trailers so I had no idea how the movie was going to be and I ended up enjoying myself. That being said, after I saw The Marvel's movie, I went and saw all of the promotional trailers that came out for The Marvel's, and, I felt, that if I had seen the trailers before I saw the movie, that I would have felt like I was cheated because the whole movie pretty much was spoiled in the trailers. I didn't know that Tessa Thompson was going to be in it and so I was super happy to see Tessa Thompson in the movie, but then, when I saw the trailer after I had seen the movie, it made me bummed that Tessa Thompsons cameo was spoiled in the trailer. I happened to like this movie! To me, it felt like the john wick of MCU movies. Low plot and heavy action. That being said though, I think you can only really enjoy this movie if you have seen all of Agents of SHIELD, Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and, Ms. Marvel, which I have seen all of. As a movie alone, it doesn't work that much I think. 🤷♀️ This movie though made me officially love love LOVE Tom Hiddleston soo much because he is married to the actress that played the Villian in The Marvel's and so then I was like, thank the universe that Tom Hiddleston is not a racist! 😍 This movie though doesn't work outside of the 3d 4dx moving seats, I will admit. Thanks for this spoiler chat you guys! 🩷
I mentioned though i saw this projected on film for free at an "old crappy theater" with stereo surrround on veterans day at an air force base with a crowd of families. It brought a charm and innocence. A novelty unseen in digital multiplex. The effects worked for this presentation. Its almost like the way the marvel films are made its still "charming old school studio star wars fx". It works. Singing scene was the worst. Lol.
to give much thought to what exactly doesn't work about this movie is to let it take over too much real estate in your mind. this is merely a rote commercial venture for Disney bosses and doesn't deserve our attention in the first place. I just watched Wind River on Netflix for the first time on Friday and that movie very much IS worth our time, showing us what you can do with Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch (Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen) when your screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (who also directs) actually has something interesting to say! in the far off spectacular alien world of a bleak and blasted wintry valley in Wyoming, gigantic pristine mountains towering all around while man's sin and folly stoops to the depths of Hades below
I don't know why some critics are being so hard on this movie. I thought was mostly meh. There are valid criticisms, like the boring villain, there feels like a lot of scenes that were cut out, or the not-so top notch CGI (especially for Beast). This may be one of the lesser MCU movies, but there are way worse superhero movies out there. Also Binary is a name that Carol Danvers went by for a time in the comics. So I guess that was the alternate version of Captain Marvel.
I didnt even recognise what's his face as Beast. It looked so comically bad I was really put off whatever happens in the post credit. And the binary outfit looked so so cheap. re: the 3 scenes discussed here - valkyrie / cats / music planet : The cat was kind of awesome the first time we saw it (in movie one) but by the xteenth time they used it in this movie; it just made it kind of boring and that sequence just went on and on. The music planet - had a sea of extras and non of it was used as effectively as the scene on the junk planet in Thor Ragnorak where Hulk and Thor skulked around in the city. I actually hate to be in the majority here that dislikes the movie because the discourse re: The Marvels is so toxic. I really disliked this and I liked most of the other MCU movies (hated love and thunder tho). Didnt have issues with Quantumania or Eternals (which I loved)
someone said elsewhere there durban (?) - Her actions in the final scene also didnt make sense as she spends the whole movie trying to save her planet but instead, she uses the bangle and breaks a hole to another dimension. And she also just dies in doing so; she doesn't save the kree homeworld. Her sun is still doomed. What was that about? This script. :/
Clearly she wasn’t thinking rationally. She was convinced her solution to use the bangles would work and was too blinded and arrogant to see it any other way.
That is what happens when someone is blinded by revenge, rage, hate, and power . This can be seen in the real world - someone good that got into power got corrupted.
I would love it if you could review „The Teachers‘ Lounge“ (Sony Pictures Classics). I don’t know when it will be released in the US but it’s this year’s Oscar submission from Germany.
Watched it today. Personally think the first 40 minutes-ish were a lot of fun, good direction and had a great time watching it. After than, it went downhill really fast. Its bad, ultimately. But i felt Nia Da Costa REALLY cooking when they let her, specially in those first 40 minutes-ish
If they do a Young Avengers they should throw Sprite in from the Eternals and she is just pissed the entire movie about being treated like a kid again.
To me this movie was just sludge. Another PG13, bad cgi sludge ball from marvel. I don’t even think the Beast thing at the end was real. I think it’s all a red herring.
I dont know how you both managed to find the liwest points if the movie the most enjoyable. Especially the wholly unnecessary song and dance number to talk to the one person on the planet who understands regular speech for all of 30 seconds. And what happened to that planet anyway? Did all the water get drained from it or what?
I'll be impressed if the crossover really does happen. It feels like to me the studios lack the enthusiasm, clout and panache to pull it off in these difficult box office times and overall dwindling sentiment about collective entertainment. But I'll watch it.
I saw rhe movie last night in 3D XD which made the effects look so cheap. When it got to the hair continuity issues near the end of the movie, i couldn't stop laughing at it. It just felt like two TV episodes glued together by a Beastie Boys montage. What threw me off was the writing of Nick Fury's character. He didn't seem significant to the story at all. Now the two wonky scenes in the movie were great. Overall, it was on par with Shazam 2. It's a harmless popcorn type of movie with the last Thor movie still being the worst in my opinion. Even a ripped Chris Hemsworth can't save that mess.
Your description of the movie is so funny 😄 And yes, the Nic Fury we see here is so inconsistent with who we know him to be. He's so weirdly drab. Other critics have suggested that he was a variant because he was so uncharacteristically bland, and that's a really good theory.
I always assumed that they would recast and make their own version of the xmen not use the Singer actors. Im on Christy with this one, none of this worked for me, Brie Larson has been soooo wasted in the marvel movies she has been in
It's frustrating, right? Because you see her in movies like Short Term 12 and Room and you know what she can do. Even her Nissan ads allow her to reveal more personality 😄
Spoiler: They win the CGI battle against someone, something. What is this movie possibly about? Can we all just pretend that ENDgame was the end of this story?
Also I literally added a star to my letterboxd score because they used the Barbra Streisand version of that song. I really enjoyed all the cats in this movie.
So the MCU has a problem. Thor Love and Thunder is the worst ever and it was only 18 months ago. Then Ant-Man Quantumania and The Marvels are bad so we have 3 of the bottom 5 movies in 18 months. Since the original Avengers I viewed MCU automatically because the quality was consistently high, and now it’s just as likely as not I’ll see a stinker. This was so unfinished and just mailed in; the flerkens were funny, yes, and I also laughed at the singing planet. Goofiness can be ok. But with no real villain and a sense they were just winging it, I was annoyed through most of this movie. You can tell the MCU folks knew this movie was going to bomb with the last trailer because they try to connect this with Tony stark, Steve Rodgers and thanos and this movie has nothing to do with any of them. Bad movie. 3/10.
I also didn't understand the in-universe power imbalances: if Captain Marvel is potentially the most powerful Avenger, why does she have so much trouble with Dar-Benn, especially when Dar-Benn loses the hammer, that didn't seem to have any effect
Sorry, joyless? This movie? It's got a lot of problems (what MCU film doesn't) but I thought it had a lot of humour and heart. The action was fun too. I do think Marvel is doing too much (too many films, too many TV shows) and I'm not watching all that. The person I saw it with has watched even less than me and she enjoyed it fine as well - though obviously she would miss the things you have to know from all the previous content but understood what she needed to well enough in context. It wasn't the best MCU film but it was far from the worst; as she said, a good night at the movies.
That Korean actor is also in the Korean submission for best international film this year, Concrete Utopia. It looks like it's officially coming out in December, but it played earlier this year at that theater in koreatown and I really enjoyed it.
Your friend Dan Murrell did a spoiler review too. Apparently he got a lot of hate from both sides about his opinion of the film. Did you two also receive a lot of hate? If so, that’s too bad.
