I mean, GoodFellas is generally considered to be a 10/10 and it's far from escapism. Movies aren't obligated to be escapist. They are however obligated to be good, which The Marvels is not.
So you can't "escape" if there are brown people and women? Conversely you should be allowed to escape but women and brown people shouldn't be allowed to as well?
I really don’t care if a movie stars women, nonwhite people, gay people, whatever. I’ve genuinely loved movies with all three aspects before. What I care about is if the writing is good and the characters are interesting. I’m not gonna watch something just because it has x in it.
Exactly. The left like to paint us as these people who hate characters that aren’t straight or white. We hate badly written characters like those. These fucks gaslight us and blame the fans where there the problem
@@JohnDavidSullivan I unfortunately have encountered people who think any film that prominently features women or minorities or gay people is automatically woke but that’s really not the case lol.
@@tj_6964 No I disagree with that. Hellraiser (2022) was an example of a transgender actor in the role of Pinhead and it worked for that film. I also don't like the term "woke", I personally prefer "virtue signalling" which is what I think most people mean when they say "woke". The only way I have a problem is when ideology comes before the story which I think anyone can agree is a bad thing. The story and characters MUST come first in any medium be it film, tv, animation, or comic.
@@JohnDavidSullivan we’re in full agreement! The story should come first. There are absolutely books movies and shows that are all about being kinder to people and to be less prejudiced that aren’t hamfisted and are incredibly well written. Ironically I think Zootopia does a good job with it
I felt the same thing with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Strange kept talking about how Mordo was trying to kill him and that they hate each other, but they never had a movie where they actually were enemies. I thought I was missing something
This is why I've been wanting stand-alone superhero movies for a while. It's crazy that it's taboo to even say this but the movies that we have gotten in phase 4 say otherwise.
The strengths i felt were very strong. The creativity and choreography with the quantum entangled fights i feel is probably something that Nia D implemented. This movie would be better if it extended the run time to flesh out the villain and our 3 mains
At the end of your review I just wanted to yell PREACH! Agree with everything you said Cody. It’s a damn shame that we can’t have an honest opinion about a movie without being crucified for it.
As many issues I have with Disney, I don’t think Brie is at fault with the captain marvel character or the movies. It’s just the people around it with lack of talent. Damn shame to see where the MCU is.
Honestly Brie Larson is a good actress she just has NOTHING to work with here, because Marvel movies are basically about nothing at this point. She was great in Scott Pilgrim.
@@tj_6964 I loved her character in Scott Pilgrim Vs the world. You can tell the script and the direction is limiting the potential she can bring because the marvel movies just like this are all mediocre lazy crap
@@FanboysFearIAmCosmo it’s crazy because endgame is one of the ten highest grossing films of all time so marvel built up a ton of goodwill that they just squandered with bland movie after bland movie
@@tj_6964also exceptionally good in Room and Short Term 12 so I've never bought the idea that Larson is the problem because she can and as excelled in other roles.
I love that you added that Bill Burr clip in there. That's exactly what I was thinking about when you were talking about this. The MCU audience is mostly men, so of course when it comes to criticism, most criticism is going to come from men. Rant well said! That is exactly how I feel when I hear crap like that too
I’ve been saying this since a couple months after End Game. “All great things must come to an end”. Marvel should be happy they had an amazing run from 2008-2020 like in their prime and were untouchable when it came to hero movies. Every dynasty comes to an end ? The Patriots, the 90’s Bulls etc. I think Marvel should just be happy they landed the plane at the end of End Game. I’ve seen sooo many things have horrific endings especially these days (Game Of Thrones).
Damn!!! Cody went hard with his views regarding the online community current climate. Truth bombs. It's one of Cody's best reviews yet. Thanks, brother.
The movie was ok. At this point marvel needs to look in the mirror and do some soul searching. Im glad marvel started another banner to explore characters like echo. Im glad feige has fired people and cancelled projects so i have hope but the films already planned before the fall off like cap 4 and Agatha need to be drastically overhauled. Also planing 8 years ahead is proving to be a bad idea. It worked in the past but now audiences change what they want every other year.
Cody, this is why you’re my favourite reviewer on RU-vid. Completely agree with your sentiment on the movie as well as with your feelings on the social commentary on the movie
We all have different opinions on movies however I 100 percent agree with your opinion on how movie culture views certain movies like this one and how they already have there minds made up before seeing it. To me your review here was a balanced and fair one.
I'm honestly just a guy that likes talking about movies. Movies are my personal brand of therapy. They have helped me through a lot, especially this year. I'm not asking to be represented in every movie I see. For certain people that have a giant stick up where the sun doesn't shine to say that, "(Insert movie title here) isn't for you because (insert dumbass reason here).", makes the subject of film discussion become less and less fun for me. I personally had fun with The Marvels, and I hope that people can just ignore all the racist and misogynistic bigotry that has been thrown at movies like this and just go and see it for themselves. If people want to throw the word "WOKE" at something, throw it at Black Christmas (2019), because that movie absolutely deserves it! I know I'm not the first person to say that, but still....
All excellent points. Watched this last night with my daughter. She had a MUCH better time than me, but i'm over 50. I'm not the target audience. I did have a good time. Will I rewatch it? I seriously doubt it. But no regrets in watching it at all.
After COVID, I made a commitment to see as many movies as I possibly could in theaters, especially Marvel movies. The Marvels was the first one that i skipped. Never liked the vibe of the trailers plus RU-vidrs that i love say that it’s not worth watching in theaters. What a shame
“All you’re doing is turning people off that are not your enemy.” Cody, you’re a smart guy. Please don’t “both sides” this. I would never get mad at someone calling me a misogynist, because I know that I’m not one. I would just ignore them. And being called one wouldn’t certainly turn me away from supporting women. No one serious and credible is saying that if someone dislikes this movie, that they’re a misogynist. Now, if someone dislikes this movie because it stars women, well then yes that would be misogynistic. What else would that be called?
people do get called ists and phobes all the time, as if people don't understand the difference between disliking something and intolerance... like, i tolerate disney making superhero movies, even tho i really dislike them, and won't watch them... i don't hate them... i don't go around stealing copies of movies from stores and smashing them...
@@EddieHenderson92dude there’s wayyy more right wingers losing their mind about perceived “wokeness” online than anything else. Woke has lost all meaning at this point they use it so much. And Brie Larsen lives rent free in their heads for the past 4 years now.
14:23 Answer: Whenever they stop cramming a political agenda into every film, or at least when both sides receive equal representation. Race/Gender/Sexual Orientation swapping only goes in one direction. The “right” side is always seen as the bad guys and the “left” side is always depicted as the good side. Whenever that changes, or whenever both sides are treated equally, then the conversation will change.
There are tons and tons of movies throughout cinema history, including recently, that are ultra right leaning and portray right wing values as the correct way of life. I don’t know you could be a film fan and not be aware of this.
Its been a good weekend for me LOki season 2 finale after seeing the marvels. For a middle aged comic bok fan I just like hanging with these characters.
As a woman I'll say it.. I HATE practically anything Marvel/DC (with the minor exception of one or two) 😂 it's not the fault of them I just really don't care for superhero films or at least anything recently; I'm not even someone who loved them at their height but I could sit through a film if need be but now I'm really just fatigued by the constant superhero saga and when I'm burnt out on something I was never that into to begin with, you can guarantee my desire to see it will not be there. Give me a horror film, ANY horror film above anything to do with this universe. Genuinely if it weren't for your reviews Cody I'd know nothing about these lol so thank you for always keeping us entertained.
The cameo at the end was a security blanket they could use to hide from people calling it complete dogshit. without Iman Vellani (?) as Kamala, this sequel would be irredeemably bad. She saves parts of it but she gets lost in the shuffle too.
FNAF was directed by a woman and it was liked or disliked based on the film's own merits and not by who's on the directors chair. I wish all woman directed films got that treatment.
I posted a review on twitter and OH BOY…I got some person just triggered, and I actually saw the movie and paid money to do so. Gave it a fair shot, and I did not like it. Simple-bad writing and bad directing. Brie Larson can act- she just needs good material. So, it’s not about who made this movie but how they made it. Thanks Cody for the vid.
Looks like this movie is headed for a record low opening for the MCU. I'm very sorry for the three lead actresses. They deserved a better movie. It's unfortunate that The Marvels is pretty much doomed to pay the price for poor decision making behind the scenes by higher ups at Marvel and Disney, but it is what it is. Also last breakdown of demographics I saw showed that men were the majority showing up to see the movie, so yeah, maybe it's not "all men" who are tanking the movie. Maybe Marvel should actually put some effort into their movies again, instead of just assuming everyone will show up if there's a Marvel logo behind it. Maybe they should quit assuming that women will flock to see any mediocre product they crap out just because it has female leads. Women showed up for Barbie. They showed up for Taylor Swift, but they're not showing up for this.
I honestly think someone needs to buy marvel from Disney. Disney thinks they need to get their greedy hands on everything and I think marvel needs new writers.
So glad you had the Quartering logo… nailed it, brother. Lmao. What a tool bag. Great review Cody!! As someone who has been ride-or-die for the MCU since Iron Man, these past few years have been horrible. I think the only project I’ve really enjoyed is Loki. I think they need to take a break, regroup and get the focus back on quality over quantity. And if that fails… then we at least have the DC ‘reboot’ and some DC Elseworlds I’m really looking forward to. (The Batman Pt 2 and Swamp Thing at the top of my list.) 🎉🎉
It’s been a while since I’ve seen that Bill Burr quote, but it hit the nail on the head. All those people who cry misogyny and sexism for female led films not doing well… well, did you guys go and see it?
I give less than a monkeys nut that a movie has a lead woman, if the majority of people in it are women, or even if there’s any social commentary in it. As long as the writing and the characters win me over and I leave the theater satisfied, that’s all I care about.
Its crazy how some people are saying you are a misogynist if you don't like a film, i am just not watching it because I checked out of MCU films a while ago and not going to waste money on something I am non interested in seeing
Well put Cody about the people causing negativity. Also Im in Australia and I havent seen any trailers for the movie which makes me wonder why ? Great review.
In my humble opinion, this had some good mpments and had so much potential. Marvel's tireless attempt at slapstick comedy really hampered a story that should have been taken more seriously....I mean especially considering the themes of genocide and displacement of populations through war and violence. And the singing planet????!!!! I mean what kind of a person would think that that was entertaining??
Is it the perfect Marvel movie? No. It is better than the first Captain Marvel movie, as I can say since I've rewatched that one before The Marvels, while I'll look some of the stuff through Google which is better than none. There were parts that I do agree especially with the story which your friend pointed out what had me head scratching in the middle especially with the villain. Dar-Benn had a strong motive but not enough to carry most of the story. As far as the movie goes, some good laughs especially with the Flerken's (as they're called) while one of Barbara Strisand's songs was playin that I was laughin my ass off when it was set up. Best I can describe was mostly the chemistry thanks to Kamala which indeed she's the goat as the cast goes. And can say this now, I do agree with most of your takes and I enjoy your fair review and can say, indeed, this is a movie that aims well for young women and even a couple of folks say they enjoyed the movie decently that even they would recommend it to their daughters and one of the reviewers' daughter said she'd enjoyed the movie so it's fair enough as the audience goes. Also, this is Nia DeCosta's third film, as I'd looked up. Her first movie while going through her college tuition is called Little Woods that has Tessa Thompson and the late Lance Reddick which was praised by critics and in the middle for the audience on Rotten Tomatoes which I'll give it a watch in the future. Would it be as great as Candyman, which I've enjoyed first time watching? I don't know because I enjoy movies. Hell, even to the point that the whole w0ke in an insulting way was just bugging me while the left does so as you'd pointed out made me realize, "better in the middle because both sides are just giving me a headache". I stand up for what's right and that's all I stick to my ground on. Better my opinions than others with a bigger ego than such unless I agree to fair, honest criticism as your review of The Marvels is. Hell, I'd like to be back in the days where everyone could just walk out of what they don't like and not be much on the whole hivemind and sheep to the slaughter society that we're living in nowadays. And as far as it goes, not only with the post-COVID, folks boycotting Disney, the usual folk hating things that is w0ke or whatever, it's just being annoying for a simple, moviegoer like myself to even read through. Apologies on this essay of a comment but just wanted to share here. Again, good review, hope your daughters have fun whenever they see this movie.
Love the channel Cody and have been watching you for well over a year now. I really feel for you when it comes to the constant polarization of cinema. I’m sure it is frustrating wading through commenters who can’t tolerate the slightest differing opinion. However, it seems to be really irking you lately. I have noticed you acknowledging it more frequently in your content. If possible, I hope you can ignore the polarization, and just give us your thoughts. Most of us are silent watchers that couldn’t care less what is or isn’t politically acceptable to one party or the other. I understand how difficult that can be. Good luck and thank you for the great content!
your have to watch good movies with female protagonists for example: kill bill, aliens with the character ellen ripley, terminator 2 with the character sarah connors, animated mulan, ghost in the shell, brave, frozen, the perfect blue, blacksawn, scream, halloween, the texas chainsaw masacre, million dolar baby, little women, captain america winter soldier with the character black widow, the dark night rises with the character and the cathwoman, snow white and the huntsman, atomic blonde, underworld, Thelma louise, the devil wears prada, etc
Codey well said thats an assessment of modern reviewing that was desperately needed and honestly is needed in this love it or hate it reception enviroment.
I’m going to take my daughters and gf to see it, they’re more excited to see Park Seo-joon than anyone else, that’ll be my fair shot of the movie although I could’ve waited. Anyway great review Cody you’re genuinely one of the best if not the BEST movie reviewer I watch
Thank you for your impassioned speech about people making blanketing accusations on others, Cody! It's a voice of reason we all have not heard of nearly enough!
Yeah that critic that you mentioned was so out of pocket for saying that. It’s a dumb narrative, you can’t critique anything nowadays without being labeled misogynistic
The only thing that excited me were the two post credit scenes honestly. Other than that the movie was just mid to me. Good enough to entertain. I hope the MCU gets it together. They're teasing cool stuff and the loki series didn't disapoint but other than that they're not doing good.
I´ll say this: Kevin Feige had been in full control for years. Prior he did have people he was supposed to answer to. He didn´t like that. Because of his succeses they got rid of them...and these have been the results. Also, Feige specifically (after ENDGAME) decided to focus the MCU in a comic inciative titled Marvel Now! where most of the regular/main characters were substituted by the same characters that are in the movies at the moment...and even back then the comics failed.
It amazes me how bad and generic the writing was in this movie felt like it was written by AI. I kid you not I guess and was saying 70% of the lines in this movie before the characters said them
Always appreciate your honest opinion... completely agree with you on the subject of blanket statements... that is getting annoying everytime you turn around
Cody Leach is the G.O.A.T. of movie critics today. Final thoughts on the movie were pitch perfect for what every sane, rational human being was thinking 💪🏻
I absolutely agree with you on that. Can we go back to the days where we used to give honest opinions on movies, tv shows, books or video games, whether we like them or not, without involving anything in regards to our current and infuriating political discourse?! I’m tired of seeing critics who don’t like movies that feature women, or people of color or LGTBQ+ without being called sexiest or racist or homophobic, just because of the awful presidency we had from 2016-2020.
A lot of the channels or personalities that have problems with this move or other recent Disney releases i often agree with their talking points. But movies is one that I disagree with.. I don't know why people need to get so upset over a movie. It will either succeed or flop and it do so on it's own merritt. So they should stfu already
I really enjoyed it, it was funny and entertaining. I thought it was going to be horrible, was pleasantly surprise. I like this movie. Is it the best movie out there? No, but it’s not the worse and it’s not a bore fest!
Most of these shitty conversations happen on social media or the internet. 95% of the time when I'm discussing a topic, controversial or otherwise, with someone in person, it's civil, even if we disagree. The dynamic of conversation completely changes when you're face to face with someone and both parties can explain their opinion in a fluid, conversational manner. You can also use your senses to calculate who NOT to engage. Social Media has us thinking everyone is a crazy asshole. Haha
I don’t think everyone’s crazy. I think a few people are and they are who I direct my annoyance at. I also think many people are perfectly sane but decide to show the worst sides of themselves online.
It feels like they wanted to do a “dark” sequel to bridge the gap but didn’t want a “Thor: The Dark World” to “Ragnorak” jump…instead they just skipped to the Ragnorak movie
You should definitely watch Miss Marvel. It does start off very middling first half, but I think it is an underrated gem in the later episodes. I cried.
I agree with a lot of what you said here. The Marvels is just fine and the best parts about it for me were the dynamic between the female actresses so these idiots who accuse you of not liking the movie because of women when the women are some of the best parts in the movie is ridiculous!
You’re preaching here, brother. I’m so sick of this disingenuous, performative “activism” that has become so prominent over the last few years. It’s regressive, not progressive.
I'm going to see this and give it the chance I think it fairly deserves and if I end up enjoying it or hating it, it's my opinion and I'm not gonna let either toxic side of film criticism take that away from me. If we lived in a world where we hate women, no way we'd be seeing a Supergirl movie or movies with girls in general get made. But if you're right about one thing, Cody, we gotta do better on both sides who hates or likes a movie and wants to attack anyone for liking or hating or because it's girls. Some of y'all will hate a film, some will like it and some like yourself will be on the middle and be like it's not as bad or as good as some make it out to be and that side of film criticism, neither side is wrong. To quote your Beau is Afraid review but I'm gonna add a little extra, "Know what you like and like what you like. Hate what you hate if don't enjoy it, but move on and leave others the hell alone for liking what they like."
I'm so glad Cody said what has frustrated so many of us for so long about the lazy labelling of misogyny as soon as criticism towards a movie that isn't amazing doesn't get amazing reviews Love the reviews Cody, keep killing it
Miss Marvel is a really fun show with personality and heart more like Raimi Spiderman than a lot of the MCU. I liked most of the shows but the show seems to have been a favorite for people who were less fond of the streaming shows. I definitely recommend it for the whole family. I liked the movie honestly just like I've liked most of the franchise. Respect you for not being another tired negative reviewer. As for the gimmick feel, I don't have an issue with it here anymore than I do with "Nick Cage as a vampire" for Reinfield or "action rom com" for True Lies but that's just me.
We need more people like cody talking about movies and review peacefully we too many people getting attack over opinions about like geeks and gamers like calling movies woke we need people like cody leach talking about movies and reviews peacefully not attacking another people opinions about movies why I watch cody leach on RU-vid because his is honest about movies and tells it what it is and I repect that keep it up making contact on your channel never change who you are cody I always appreciate your channel and content you put out on RU-vid
Haven't seen this yet, but I actually liked the first Captain Marvel and gasp I liked Bree in the role. So I actually want to see this, I work for Albertson's and this season doesn't give me time to go to the theaters so I will buy this on 4K and enjoy this when I can 😎.
A lot of this drama stuff is the reality tunnel that is catered to you via your social media and RU-vid feeds. We all know there are haters out there, but if you aren’t one then best thing to do is to not take it personally. Let people be stupid.
I don’t think that you can’t talk about it. If someone watches the movie and genuinely doesn’t like it for story/pacing/whatever reason? Fine. But 99% of the criticisms I’ve seen have been the typical morons shrieking about “woke” and complaining that they don’t like Brie Larson “because she hates white men.” My friend and I saw it last night, and we both really liked it. I think Iman is perfect as Kamala, and it sets up a lot of really cool stuff. And we both thought that overall, it was better than Quantumania, Love & Thunder and Multiverse of Madness.
