The Mary Poppins Penguin Mistake

The timing of this drove me crazy EVERY TIME for years until I figured out why it’s off 😭 I suppose I can forgive Peter Ellenshaw as he was a brilliant painter (but not a trained voiceover artist or singer 😂). We can’t all be great at everything all the time, and that’s ok 😊
“They made the mistake of asking me if I would do the voice of one of the penguins. All I had to do was one simple thing. All I had to say was, ‘And Jane.’ Dear Irwin Kostal was a sweet man-great memories of that dear man. He was the orchestrator and conductor. We were down on this stage and here on the screen was this little thing going ‘And Jane.’ I was missing it every time. I had never done anything like this before. Irwin said, ‘Peter, look at me.’ He was watching the screen and he mouthed ‘And Jane.’ So he said, ‘Do it when I do it.’ So I watched him, and like a child that is how I managed to do it. Irwin showed me how.” - Peter Ellenshaw
The notes about what Walt contributed to the gags of Mary Poppins are all from the movie’s screenwriter and producer Bill Walsh. He discussed this film (and more) in a May 1973 interview with Bob Thomas, the person who wrote the definitive biograhy of Walt called “Walt Disney: An American Original” (which I highly recommend!) 📖

My second favorite Walt Disney book (after "The Art of Walt Disney: From Mickey Mouse to the Magic Kingdoms")! I also have an autographed copy of the former, as well as a personally signed copy (by both Bob Thomas and Roy's son Roy E.) of a follow-up book about Roy Sr.

Hold on, do you all believe that animation is done before the voice over? Like, you think that the speaking lines are recorded while the animation plays on a projector (like that opening scene in Mrs Doubtfire)? Sorry, but voices are actually recorded first, and edited for pacing, and then given to animators so that they know exactly when and how to animate the mouths. So…if Mr Ellenshaw actually had trouble with his timing, they could have easily trimmed the timing so that it’s not noticeable. In other words, this sounds like urban legend.

Interestingly the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was also very little like the book series by Ian Fleming and though Ian Fleming had died before the film was made. Roald Dahl had been asked to write the script for it. (He had known and served with Ian Fleming during the 2nd World war.) But the director didn't like the script so their was a huge falling out. Both the director and Dahl later disagreed strongly over who had invented certain places and characters in the film version that were not in the original book, such as the child catcher and Vulgaria and it's occupants.

the "and jane" is exactky timed as it should be. If you actually read his story you might notice that it nowhere says that is wrong in the fonal take. only that it what hard to do. And its much harder to get that perfect offbeat rythm than placing it in rythm.

Walt Disney was a disturbed man, but he also understood the nuances of movie magic and wonder; so, after hearing about his contributions to Mary Poppins, I feel conflicted about Walt now.

What is your source for believing he was a disturbed man? There is a lot of misinformation out there about Walt Disney. I’ve read hundreds of interviews of people who knew Walt personally, and never got that impression from any of them.

The cannon boom with the furniture etc all moving is silly ... I thought this at six when I first saw the movie as a child in 1966.. I remember thinking if the Father was so particular in general (fusspot) why would he not speak to the Admiral and tell him the cannon topples his house ornaments each hour ...
