@@bluehavencd yes, yes, yes!!!! Another highly underrated actor. I was hoping he would have a lasting role in The Ozarks when he appeared on that show, but his character was quickly killed off.
The funny thing is that he never actually sang La Bamba in the movie. David Hidalgo of Los Lobos provided the singing voice for Ritchie Valens (Lou Diamond Phillips) in the movie.
I love that even generations after Richie Valens passed away his legacy and hit LaBamba still resonates with people today. I don't even think Richie knew how much of an Icon he was to become.
I still consider this one of the best reveals of all time. And, I just love that he sang "La Bamba." Some may not realize that he did not do any of the singing in the movie.
So funny because my friend and I always watch and she will always guess the person under the mask is the actual person who sang the song and I’m like they are not gng to do that. Granted it was not Lou song nor did he sing in movie but that to me is still him singing his song lol . Those were both our arguments 😂 And she is notorious for guessing dead people every season 🙄😊
@@kristinholsapple6734 I seem to have guessed almost every contestant right. :) And I got every final 3 contestants right too. In fact in season 3 I got Nick Carter right and I got Bow Wow right too. In season 4 I got Dionne Warwick right.
Ritchie Valens smiling down to know that La Bamba still rocks since his early passing and what no better way than Lou himself presenting it again since the film

I met him at a convention a couple of years ago. My Mother had just passed away from Liver Cancer and her biggest wish was to have had met Mr. Phillips. I was able to bring my Dad instead. I discussed with Mr. Phillips about my Mother's passing and how my Father was heartbroken after being married for 54 years. My mother always said Mr. Phillips reminded her of my Father when they first met. The movie La Bamba and the way Mr. Phillips dressed in that movie always reminded her of my Dad. Even I when I was about 22 and young guns 2 had come out many thought I was Mr. Phillips and I introduced Mr. Phillips to my dad and my dad got teary and so Did my Mr. Phillips and they hugged each other. I took a picture of that hug and I honestly felt like my Mother was there, "smiling at them and feeling the love" i then took a picture with them and Mr. Phillips said some kind words to my dad. I will forever be grateful for that day and what a kind, humble, and excellent human being Mr. Lou Diamond Phillips is. "Thank you and I know my mother was happy and Thankful as well by your generosity and for just giving me some of your time for explaining why we were there"
It is so nice when your hero lives up to your expectations and then some. Really sorry about your Mom. You will be together again one day….she is right there with you.
I knew him when he was just a little skinny guy in High School in Corpus Christi, TX. He was a year behind me and was very active in sports and many other school activities, wish I knew then what I know now! :)
I don't care for the show and only clicked because I saw LDP, who is one of me all-time favorites! I've watched La Bamba at least 40 times lol. Watching the end of this was AMAZING!
I’m 42 and La Bamba is one of the movies I remember as practically a little older than a toddler. Lou Diamond Phillips could have been the guy from that movie, but he’s had a ridiculous career doing everything. Huge respect for him
Here is the truth Lou, your performance of La Bamba has had people cheering for over 20 years. Your other work cannot be ignored and your success cannot be denied. Well done sir.

I love hearing him sing La Bamba! He’s great and I’ve always felt he gives Richie Valens a run for his money!!! I believe that Richie Valens is thrilled to hear Lou Diamond Phillips sing his music and portray him in the movie. He’s a wonderful actor, singer and person. ❤❤❤

This made me tear up. I mean i believe he’s 100% Philippine American yet played the role of a Mexican American rock and roll legend. La Bamba first came out in theaters when I was about 8 years old in it was one of my favorite movies to watch when I was a kid. And I had never heard him sing this song live and here he sang it like a true Latino with so much passion and attitude. We Mexican Americans love this guy and always will. We are so very grateful to him for having played his role as Richie valence with so much passion, seriousness, and respect.
@@littlebigkicker If Wikipedia and other sources are stating the facts, he's Filipino American. Another source states that his father was an American of Scots-Irish and one-quarter Cherokee, not Navajo descent, and his mother, a native of Candelaria, is a Filipino of Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Hawaiian descent. Get a DNA test and go with the most dominant!
He is as genuinely nice as you would think he is. I met him at a Comicon a few years ago. My brother had painted a sand dollar for him with items from his movies. He loved the detail and we talked about La Bamba and Young Guns. He also broke into a big smile when I mentioned to my brother that he’d also starred on Broadway as the King in the musical The King and I. Love him!
When my husband and his brothers perform at festivals at our church he would sing La Bamba and he would tell me "that song was for you, a silent way of saying I'm thinking of you when I sing this. He sang it every year from 2015-2019 ❤
Always loved this actor, so good in so many movies. Even the less well known movies, he always, always made them better. And he's still got it as a singer too! Way to go! 🙂
I looove when famous people fan out over other famous people. We ALL grew up loving La Bamba and I know I had the biggest crush on Lou Diamond Phillips (until he played the Night Stalker and scared the daylights out of me). This is ICONIC!
I didn’t know he was Filipino. I thought when I saw his movie and fell in love with him when I was young, I thought his Latino since in the movie he sings in Spanish.
Filipinos speak Spanish due to Spain had govern over them until they got their independence. Hence a lot of them have Spanish last names and Spanish is their second language. Also culturally in California went through the same harsh treatment like other Hispanics working in the fields. Even in the school system of California.
Just met this guy at a comic convention this weekend. Super nice down to earth guy. Even gave me a little info that we might hear some news about Longmire soon.
My friends and I have met Lou Diamond Phillps many years ago when he and his band, Pipefitters were playing at a local pub in West Palm Beach. Lou and his lady at the time visited every patron there before he and his bandmates start their set. Lou and his lady were awesome! We talked to him few minutes. I told Lou that his portrayal of Ritchie Valens got to me because Valen's era of music is my father's era of music.
So strange this came up today! I was just thinking about him today…hoping he is doing well, and is happy and healthy. He sure looks and sounds great! Go Lou…
I have goosebumps all over me, am weeping now watching dis unmasked, I watched La Bamba with a friend that has pass away and am remembering when we watched it together. We cried the whole night and 30 years later am crying again.
Damn. That made me nostalgic & gave me goosebumps as it took back to my childhood days. Entering my teen years, I watched one my all time favorite movies, La Bamba. Lou was so great in his role as Richie Valence that I actually thought he was the real singer. Thanks for the memories, Lou.❤😊😇💯🙏
Such a talented actor. His performance in La Bamba was supurb. I love that he sang his famous movie song! Awesome! He was awesome in Blue Bloods as well!
Hes a freaking national treasure. One of my all time favorites. Labamba, young guns 1 & 2, the first power, route 666, stand & deliver etc. Hes always awesome.
He was one of my moms favorite actor, "what a hunk" she used to say, when he sung la bamba it brought back memories of her and i watching the movie. Hes an amazing underrated actor and damn seeing him perform brought a smile and a tear to my face. Way to fool them lou!!!!!!!!!!
Had the great pleasure of shaking hands with Mr. Phillips waaaay back in 2001 (or 2000 ?) when I visited LA for hollidays. Watched them film a scene for "Knight Club" (or something like that) - right down the street from the hostel I was living in - for a few hours, then when they had a pause and he was getting his makeup fixed a bit he asked if I wanted to take a picture (probably got tired of me hovering in the background, hehehe). Quite a firm handshake and very pleasant to speak to. Too bad we couldn't talk more than "hey man wanna take a picture, would LOVE to...what kind of camera is that, a digital one, do you want to see the picture ? Sure...oh, cool, that's cool, I gotta get me one of those...okay, take care now, gotta get back to filming" or pretty much words to that effect...very pleasant and definitely SAVED my holliday
