Possibly the most overly melodramatic project reveal, but hey. Teenage gothicvictorianlittrash Bernadette is very pleased.
Fabric Sources:
Red changeable organza: stash (approx 4 yd, 120” wide)
Black beaded net: Diana Fabrics, NYC (1 yd)
White silk underskirt: Fabrics Garden, NYC (3 yd)
White silk chiffon: Fabrics Garden, NYC (3 yd)
Black cord: Daytona Trimming, NYC (3 yd)
Black twill tape: Daytona Trimming, NYC (3 yd)
Artstuff:
(Please know that these are affiliate links)
Cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/2Fzl7qa
Sable watercolor brushes (#2, #10, and #0 used here): amzn.to/2DfgXBt
Watercolor palette: amzn.to/2FwRpSH
Windsor & Newton Gouache for opacity (Spectrum red, Alizarin crimson, zinc white):
-Starter pack: amzn.to/2SYmqSJ
-More advanced pack: amzn.to/2Fv3IyU
-(Gouache is mega expensive so I usually just buy the tubes individually as needed from my local art supply shop and have been collecting colors for years, but the starter pack (or even just a basic R/Y/B, black and white) should be all you need to start off. I can tell you from experience that settling for cheaper brands is not worth it as the difference in paint quality is significant. W&N paints are water soluble and so can be re-wetted and used again once dried, while most others dry into plastic and cannot be reused. This also means that the paint behaves differently on the paper during use: water soluble paints should be able to be reworked after drying, but the cheaper qualities can’t do that. I shall stop pontificating about paints now. Carry on.)
Masking fluid: amzn.to/2SU4Q22
Textured with black tea granules (Tetley’s, if you must know.)

And her voice is exceptionally calming and awesome so yes, I would love to get an audiobook narrated by her! Heck I would read classics if she narrated them! 😂😂

I like having a black underlay for the skirt, it deepens the red to more of a blood colour, which I think is most appropriate

I thought I would prefer the black too but upon thinking about it...it’s supposed to be death and the white underlay will make it all wispy and other worldly. Either way it’s an incredible dress. And yes that beaded fabric is insane! The colored sketch/painting is phenomenal. I’d be framing that & hanging it on the wall!

I definitely prefer the black. Death, as in the grim reaper, is always depicted as wearing a black shroud. Although the talents of our beloved seamstress will no doubt make a beautiful gown no matter what.
@monanagel6616
@monanagel6616 4 года назад
The very first thought would in deed be death = black. But if seen from a realistic and naturalistic point, death fades all colours. Black may be the "idea" we associate with death, the darkness the mind wanders into, the grave - but white is the dead body itself, faded, drained of blood and life. It's a question of which aspect you want to emphasize.

@karencostanzo2906
@karencostanzo2906 4 года назад
I was told by the lady in the fabric store to do this to get a better look at the colors - Drape a black fabric over your selection Shield the opening of your "tent" with your body to block out as much fluorescent light as possible Use the flash on your phone to see the actual color MOST IMPORTANT STEP - put the black fabric back so they let you do it again when you are in next.
@marcellespeake4272

@@karencostanzo2906 Wow, would not have thought of that. So cool. I normally just drag one of the employees to the window or door to get natural light on the piece, sometimes going outside if the window/door is in shadow of buildings etc. Sometimes that can mean standing there for an hour or so until they are not busy and realize that I will not leave until they comply! Promising of course to purchase SOMETHING. Sometines offering to do a coffee run for them helps too!

@Karen Costanzo- Just like with paint samples, the ideal thing is to view the color under the type of lighting where the fabric (or paint) will be seen. If it will be seen under fluorescent lighting, like at an office or a public space, then so be it.

Wonderful! Cannot wait to see how this turns out. May I suggest adding red beading to the veil? It would be evocative of the blood as described in the passage but look less costumey than adding fake blood. Best of luck with your endeavour!

@triangleshiny
@triangleshiny 4 года назад
seconding this, adding fake blood will simply cheapen the entire outfit, especially with that gorgeous fabric. it might also stain it terribly, and fake blood isn't exactly easy to remove. trying a more goth, "skeletal" style of makeup, with emphasis on the cheekbones and darkening around where the shadows naturally fall on your face (not necessarily super dark) will help the 'ghastly' effect as well, especially behind a veil where most of your face will be obscured.
@16letterd1
@16letterd1 4 года назад
I was here to comment the same thing. Bright red beads would evoke a kind of “dripping blood” idea. It would really recall the idea of “bleeding at the pores” that is in Poe’s story

I have to confess I was the teensiest bit disappointed to find out this wasn't going to be the Phantom's Red Death costume from the masked gala in The Phantom of the Opera, but that's only because I'm beyond incredibly obsessed with that particular story. Setting that aside, this looks incredible, I do love the literary inspiration, and I'm very excited to see you put it all together.

My sense of the relative time periods for the two stories aren't super clear, but I had thought the Phantom's costume was a deliberate homage to the Masque of the Red Death. Wasn't Phantom written after? Was his costume described in the original book, or added in the musical?

The Masque of the Red Death is, by far, my favorite story of Poe’s. And the 1840’s is, by far, my favorite fashion period of the 19th century. This joining of the two into an outfit brings me so much joy! I absolutely love how you’re using the “bones” of the gown construction to your thematic advantage-I think that’s absolutely brilliant! I’ve been planning a The Horned King (from The Black Cauldron) medieval- and Red Death-inspired costume for a while now, and I’ve been considering doing an 18th century Red Death ensemble. In fact, the first thing I ever sewed was my 11th grade Halloween costume in 2009, and it was the Red Death in his shroud. So you can see why this costume announcement has me so excited!

That initial sketch where the bottom half of the skirt looks sheer so the legs are visible reminds me of the YA novel "Masque of the Red Death" by Bethany Griffin. It's set in a sort of dystopian historical setting morally yet with a futuristic knowledge for science/technology. (I'm hesitant to call it "steampunk" but the vibe is there). In that novel the clothing is described as "modest" and more Victorian-era, but the upper class ladies altered their hemlines to "show off" their legs and prove that they were free of the plague. Maybe it's the subject of your project and maybe because I'm utter trash for YA novels that I was already thinking of that book (of course I was attracted to it because of the Poe influence)

Norwescon and other scifi conventions frequently have costume shows where you can compete and/or dances where people wear anything and everything! My daughter has attended Norwes in Seattle for a couple of decades now. Look online for something like this in your area, most major cities have them. If your costume is really great, local and con going artists will pay you to sit for them to sketch, paint or photograph!

Screaming isn't the best word choice. Panic and sheer horror sounds more like it. I love your energy!

I think the black underlay would look fantastic and make it look more like blood than pink, Using white cording and tape for outlining the stays in the bodice to look like bones would look fantastic.

YES. YES. YES. my literary heart is pounding with excitement! I write in my spare time, and one of those stories was how the Red Death was a woman and came to the modern-day, seeking revenge for those who could not get it. I have always loved the idea of seeing Poe's iconic non-human (and vaguely human) characters come to life and in female form. My dream is coming true vicariously through you! I cannot wait to stalk this project on all your socials!

At first I was wanting you to use the black underlining, but I think the white is a more interesting idea. Though it is easier to see through black than white. I absolutely adore your videos, and now I want to make that dress.

Edgar Allan Poe, one of the world's first "Goths" ;-) Red jacquard or crushed velvet or taffeta for the innermost layer of the bodice. A little of the texture will show through the sheer layers. Maybe use the same kind of material for an underskirt? Instead of a mask, makeup - corpse white with a few red droplets. Oh, I love the drapin at the neckline!

Manic panic and a few others have a light mint \arsenic green makeup to hide red complexion problems with a white powder for a realistic deathly pale look.
