The existence of body odor suggests it was a reproductive advantage at some point, unless it arrived later as a factor that was irrelevant due to washing and covering
I just bought my dream singer yesterday for £10 from my local charity shop it's from 1898 just spend over 2 hours last night disassembling it to clean of the trust,
You absolutely DO want lanolin on your face. It’s helps the skin heal and softens it so that it’s better at retaining moisture. Similarly to urea. And the best thing is that it’s just sheep’s hair grease, so entirely natural and nothing in it is harmful. My perfect skin care product would consist of lanolin, beeswax, and urea.
I would love to wear regency stays instead of a bra. Fully serious question… not sure if possible to answer this but how does one adjust the cup gussets for a larger bust size? I’d be interested in seeing a video for under garments about measuring for different sizes or accounting for curves. Just curious. Or if Bernadette knows someone she’d like to point in the direction of…
I was surprised to find my teenage kid who lifts weights and make no effort to have a thin waist, has a waist 1 whole inch larger than Scarlet O'Hara from Gone with the Wind. They were the same age as at the start of the book. It does make clothes shopping in these plump modern times a challenge.
1. No, people did not just assume that everyone smelled. They were taught by academics that hygiene back then was poor and that everyone smelled. 2. I think part of the reason that some people think everyone was nasty back then is because they’re not sure when soap was invented, or what types of soap-like substances were available, and who had them. 3. There actually were some who smelled pretty badly though and hygiene wasn’t the best. 4. But yeah, hygiene wasn’t as terrible as everyone thinks. Some people did have basic cleanliness.
I feel that this is the solution we need to solve all the problem of modern day bras, shoulder hurt and back pain and underwire poking would all be dealt with and it would improve posture and it wouldn’t even look that bad
I started wearing a corset regularly and i thought the aglets at the back had to be literally meeting. And let me tell you my ribs hurt so much 2 hours later, that i ripped that mofo off so fast. So the idea that a woman would wear something constricting herself, let alone her baby is honestly ridiculous.
Bernadette, I meant to post this on your last ranking video, but you should do a video ranking historical accuracy in music videos! Culture Club's Karma Chameleon comes to mind first but I'm sure theres lots more!
I think actors complain about how “oppressive” wearing corsets are in historical movies and shows because they are steel boned instead of synthetic whale bone. Steel does’t mold to the body like whale bone, or the synthetic version we would use today. People wore corsets and stays as an undergarment. If they were super uncomfortable, they would not have been worn for literally centuries. Frankly, i wish they were still the norm. If we didn’t rely so much on our natural body shapes, i think people would be more confident in themselves. I know i would be. I would also welcome the back support…lol. Don’t get me wrong, I am all for the body positivity movement of today, but i think corsetry is way more comfortable than shapewear.
Ummm they DID faint. Often. High mortality rates in children as well. The women did NOT have muscular bodies. That was not sermly to do anything that would cause such muscles. You cannot use the bodies of woman from this era with the bodies of those from that era. I grew up with a Granby born 1899 in the UK. Plus my family own pitzfer. Hundreds of years if records.
Beautifully made garment and a beautifully made video to show it off! Music was pleasant and unobtrusive, your explanations clear. I still have and use my old White treadle machine. Best wishes, Granny Jannie
Not going to watch the video, just wanted to comment on how I find it hilarious that you have a disclaimer at the beginning. Viewer discretion as if you’re showing some burnt corpses or a mass grave.
