PC-21 Info From the Official Website.
THE NEXT GENERATION TRAINER
The Ultimate Training System
To train the next generation of military pilots, Pilatus developed the next generation trainer: the PC-21, designed and built specifically with student pilots in mind. With air force budgets under continuous pressure, the PC-21 provides a cost-effective and highly efficient training solution. On the PC-21, pilots destined to fly fighter aircraft do not need to transition to jets until much later than those flying conventional trainer aircraft, reducing cost and training time. To achieve this, Pilatus significantly expanded the design and performance envelope to take this single-engine turboprop into an area that was, until now, exclusively the domain of jet trainer aircraft.
Ab-Initio to Advanced Training
The PC-21 is as benign and easy to fly for the ab-initio student as it is challenging and rewarding for the pilot preparing for the front line. The capabilities of the PC-21 make it ideally suited to a very wide training envelope. It can be used from day one, eliminating the need for an elementary flying training fleet and also bridging the performance gap between traditional turboprop trainers and expensive lead-in fighters. In this respect, the PC-21 provides significant advantages over traditional turboprops and jet trainers.
FEATURES
Next Generation Training for Next Generation Air Forces
The PC-21 design ensures a predictable operating cost profile. An innovative concept, modern materials and validation with a full-scale fatigue test, result in an aircraft that is ideal for both conventional and performance-based operations. Experience with existing PC-21 customers has shown that it is possible to reduce the cost of taking a student to wings graduation by more than 50 per cent.
COCKPIT
Fully Customisable up to Your Needs
Systems integration is at the heart of the PC-21 cockpit philosophy. As an advanced trainer aircraft, the cockpit display and control systems are configured to match the latest generation front-line aircraft as closely as possible. Trainees are exposed to an operational cockpit environment at the earliest stages of their training. This enables aircrew to acquire skills that are of direct relevance to front-line aircraft from day one.
MULTI MISSION CAPABILITY
Enhanced Training for Each Phase
The PC-21 is designed not only to satisfy the requirements for basic and advanced military pilot training but also to provide enhanced training for all aircrew in the following skills: mission planning and tactical navigation, mission system management, civil flight management, electronic warfare, air-to-air operations and air-to-ground operations including radar training, simulated weapons employment and night vision goggles operation. The PC-21 is enhanced by the ability to adapt the aircraft avionics to the requirements of each phase of training. The front and rear cockpits can be de-coupled for independent operation or to allow instructor access to training modes and data not available to the trainee.

I am a Pilatus nut - always have been, the PC12 is by far my favourite aircraft of all time and now I get to work on her, the 21 is not far behind it.... I have been waiting for this build with baited breath. Don't ever doubt how cool your 'job' is.

Very nice video. For the landing gear mounting, I actually found a solution that is even safer than wood screws, I tap a 4 or 5mm thread into the wood and use the corresponding bolts. On a bad landing the threads get easily destroyed and it is usually possible to tap a size .5mm larger (ex: M4.5 etc).
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 2 года назад
Thanks Arnaud. I'm a huge fan of that method as well. In a case like this it came with the gear installed which is why the wood screws. I could have filled and re drilled but 2 of the 4 holes were perfect. Thanks 😀

Nice plane Jon, I converted the gear in my CARF Tucano to Electron, brakes and all with the GS200. I needed to use their ER50 High torque motors on the mains as the CARF legs are very heavy. The electric brakes are fantastic and the GS200 allows 5 different levels of ABS braking. The gyro assist steering is another great feature. I changed the inner gear doors to electric actuators again from electron. This is just a total bullet proof system that just reliably keeps on working again and again. Can't go wrong with this !

Great job, as usual, I like how you showed the alignment of the horn to the servo to provide a smooth movement and correct the tolerances and gaps to prevent flutter. That's going to be a powerful machine when done.

Well that went pretty Darn well the Landing Gear could have gone wrong in so many ways even flap hinge install Tell ya what that's one big bird. If everything goes like this episode It,s gonna be a quick build. Looks like more than enough room for all the gear and easier no thrust tube !!!!!!! Look forward to the next episode. Carry on. ;0)

Awesome! I really love these airplanes. Super quick. I have never used an air system but I think electric is the way to go 'at this point' as my friend would say. Turbine question..can you store a turbine model in your house or would it smell up the place? ie. my model room is an extra bedroom and I don't have a garage
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 2 года назад
Thanks! There really isn't much smell at all. I use kerosene as it smells the least. Diesel to me is the worst. I also use the Dreamworks vents with the thread in plugs so they close off the fuel system. So unless you get a spill in the aircraft it shouldn't smell much at all.

That’s not what I used on mine…for the nose I used the same as the main…..16mm trunnions and reverse setup, unless they change the nose oleo….the pin won’t work. For the nose I block mounted the retract, and used the oleo and servo mount from SM, but I installed a plate to mount a Mini servo (MKS) and had to sand the mechanics so it could retract… For the nose door I designed a mount for the 2 mini servo (older JR3421 I think) Your correct you do need a patch for the steering….😊
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 2 года назад
Thanks Daniel. After going through it now I think either method would be fine. The skymaster leg uses a 8mm pin so if we had the same trunion as the mains I could have just installed the entire assembly into the electron setup. The benefit of switching it to the electron pin and steering arm is you make up a bit of the lost trunion length from moving from the skymaster gear to the electron.. Overall i'm happy that the electrons fit and work. Never know when it's not a plug and play setup what crap you will have to mess with to make it fit 😂

Iv noticed a lot of nice pannel line and rivet detail on some of these models, have you ever whethered or picked them out with pannel liner? 👍
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 2 года назад
Hello Scott. Not in the factory installed locations but if a repair has been made then the detail needs to be re added. Weathering, yes, I have done that to many aircraft.

Can you please give me your specs on the Electron Retract Set, as I have the same kit I want to convert. And is there any reason why you did not add the electric brakes versus air brakes?
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc Год назад
If you tell Electron what your using it for they will know what to send. Just tell them the same set that you sent to The Lighter Side of RC for the PC21 Build. The mains are leg mounted trunions. The nose is an 8mm pin. Because the original legs are being used the only feesable option is for the stock air brakes to be used.

Seems like an awful lot of orange peel in the paint. That's not typical of SkyMaster is it? Is it just the video?
@thelightersideofrc
@thelightersideofrc 2 года назад
Overall it's not a smooth like glass clear coat. Many of the scale aircraft from skymaster are flat or matte finishes. On something like this I think it's a decent finish without overdoing the clear coat for that ultra smooth look. More clear = more weight. Could it be better? Yes for sure.
