Professor Dr. Duncan Richard Smith, serving as the Assistant Director for Research at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences, Mahidol University, is a distinguished British virologist known for his exceptional research on diseases caused by viruses transmitted by mosquitoes, such as dengue fever, Zika fever, and Chikungunya fever. These diseases are of significance given Thailand’s high incidence of illness annually.
His research aims to understand all the functions of these viruses, which can lead to the development of vaccines and therapeutics to prevent and treat these various viral diseases.
Prof. Dr. Duncan has authored more than 260 research papers and has been honored with the Outstanding Researcher Award of Mahidol University in 2020, and Mahidol University recognized him as the foremost researcher among its faculty members in terms of publications and citations.

ศาสตราจารย์พิเศษ ดร.ดันแคน ริชาร์ด สมิท (Prof. Dr. Duncan Richard Smith) ดำรงตำแหน่งผู้ช่วยผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายวิจัย สถาบันชีววิทยาศาสตร์โมเลกุล มหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล
ท่านเป็นนักไวรัสวิทยาชาวอังกฤษ ที่มีความเป็นเลิศในการศึกษาวิจัยโรคติดเชื้อไวรัสที่มียุงเป็นพาหะ อันได้แก่ ไข้เลือดออก ไข้ซิกา และไข้ปวดข้อยุงลาย (ชิคุนกุนยา) ซึ่งประเทศไทยมีอัตราการป่วยด้วยโรคติดเชื้อไวรัสเหล่านี้จำนวนมากในแต่ละปี
โดยงานวิจัยของ ศ.พิเศษ ดร.ดันแคน มีเป้าหมายสำคัญ คือ การทำความเข้าใจถึงกลไกทั้งหมดของเชื้อไวรัส ที่นำไปสู่การพัฒนาวัคซีนและวิธีบำบัดรักษา เพื่อใช้ป้องกันและรักษาโรคติดเชื้อไวรัสต่าง ๆ เหล่านี้ได้
ปัจจุบันศ.พิเศษ ดร.ดันแคน มีจำนวนผลงานวิจัยตีพิมพ์มากกว่า 260 เรื่อง ท่านได้รับรางวัลเป็นผู้ที่มีผลงานดีเด่นเฉพาะทางสาขาการวิจัย ประจำปี 2563 ของมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ท่านเป็นที่รู้จักและได้รับการยอมรับจากมหาวิทยาลัยว่าเป็นนักวิจัยที่มีผลงานตีพิมพ์และการอ้างอิงโดดเด่น และท่านยังติดอันดับเป็นหนึ่งในนักวิจัยของมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ที่ได้รับการตีพิมพ์และอ้างอิงสูงสุด Top 2% ของโลก จากการจัดอันดับของ World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University ในช่วงปี 2019-2023
ทั้งนี้ ศ.พิเศษ ดร.ดันแคน ให้ความสำคัญกับการสร้างทีมในการทำงานวิจัยให้แข็งแกร่ง และเชื่อว่าเป็นสิ่งสำคัญที่สุดในการทำงานวิจัย เพราะงานวิจัยจะประสบความสำเร็จไม่ได้เลยถ้าปราศจากทีมที่ดี
