Discover the physics behind Michael Jordan’s legendary slam dunk hang time.
--
Michael Jordan’s legendary slam dunk from the free throw line has been calculated at 0.92 seconds of pure hang time. But how many seconds could Jordan have gotten were he doing the same jump on Mars? Or Jupiter? Andy Peterson and Zack Patterson share the math equation behind hang time.

You probably should also have mentioned that for a small enough asteroid, he might not ever come back down and would instead end up in orbit around it or even achieve escape velocity and wind up in orbit around the Sun instead. Would be interesting to calculate exactly how small it would need to be for that to happen.
@franksierow5792
@franksierow5792 Год назад
I do not think he could go into orbit around an asteroid by simply jumping: he would either not come back down, or would come back down. To orbit he would need some "sideways" velocity. to get into a low orbit, maybe he would be able to run faster and faster until he reached orbital velocity, then lift his feet.

It's definitely not correct. Let's assume it is correct. That implies the height is strictly increasing. That is wrong. Hence, the initial assumption is wrong. Therefore it should be a -, which makes you wrong also. S=ut+0.5at^2. However, a=-g, since v, s and a are vector quantities and v and s are positive upwards and gravity acts downwards.

@YuhaoBoku
@YuhaoBoku 9 лет назад
Daniel Björkman g is negative only if you define upwards as positive, it really depends on your chosen coordinate system. I have shown the working outs in Nikul Patel's comment, and what the guy did in the video is correct, no need for re-check.
@darkdanne
@darkdanne 9 лет назад
The hight axis is pointing upwards in the video man
@YuhaoBoku
@YuhaoBoku 9 лет назад
Yes, you're right, but I'm saying it will depend on the chosen direction of positive. But anyways, I have shown the working outs that both cases work. Here is the working out from Nikul Patel's comment: If he defines upwards to be positive, then the value of g would be -9.8, the value of △H would be a positive number, and the value of initial y-velocity would be +4.51. Now from the equation, and the given initial y-velocity values, we would calculate the hang time by taking △H be 0, and work out the two t, then take the difference to get the hang time (just like he stated): 0 = 4.51t - 4.9t^2, rearranging gives: t(4.9t - 4.51) = 0, and so t = 0 and 0.92. Now we consider the other case (should be very obvious now that the other case will also work...): If he defined downwards to be positive, then the value of g would be +9.8, the value of △H would be a negative number, and the value of initial y-velocity would be -4.51. Again using the equation we have: 0 = -4.51t + 4.9t^2, rearranging gives: t(4.9t - 4.51) = 0, and so t = 0 and 0.92.
@ZipaNipa

also the animation starting at 0:58 is a bit misleading since it says g=9.8 and shows planets coming towards earth, as if they would be accelerated with the same acceleration. (For others, the further you are the smaller the applied force, following equation G=¥×((m1×m2)÷r^2) where ¥ is the gravitational constant and r is the distance between two objects

Based off that equation it seems that velocity is the only determining factor, since gravity and initial height is the same for everyone. Does that mean that usain bolt has the greatest hangtime? How does this equation apply to long-jumpers, since the WR is almost 9m, was their velocity just that much greater than MJs?

Great video, but the formula displayed at 1:34 is actually wrong. It should be -1/2 * gt^2 as gravity is pulling you towards the earth. Then you also get the right picture of the parabola at 2:08 and the correct numerical values. But apart from this mistake, I like the video alot and use it in my lectures!
@EugeneGolden

But that depends on initial velocity? How do we determine that? Are we using an Olympic record as the maximum? Are we using the point at which the leg bones would break? In basketball, "hangtime" refers to the time your feet are off the ground. Clearly Jordan is off the ground much longer than .98 sec. Is hangtime in this video referring to the time spent at max height? I'm 45 year old dude and can count "one one thousand, two one thousand" while in the air. So I'm certain this .98 calculations is something else.
@roidroid
@roidroid 9 лет назад
What about the angle at which you jump tho? If you jump straight up, then you get the max height and max hangtime. But if you jump forward, then that takes away some of the energy from your jump's height, lowering your hangtime. Michael's "infamous jump from the free throw line" obviously wasn't a straight vertical jump, if he were to reach the net.

Kind of misleading how the time coordinate mapped exactly into the forward distance of the animation. They are different measurements

There's only one conclusion to be made here. Spaceketball. Let's send some All Stars to the moon.

Jumping on a gas giant like Jupiter... One would technically fly forever :)

Wait at 00:58, doesn't gravity weaken the farther away you are? Or is that just the force that does that?

Add a double somersault before dunking and his airness will be more epic you'll believe he can fly.

Shouldn't it be mentioned that air resistance was not considered?

If Michael Jordan trained in a strong gravity planet like Jupiter and then traveled to earth which has a weaker gravity he would literally fly, he would need a lot of force to hang for one second in Jupiter but that force would make him hang on Earth for around 2 seconds
@shko1259
@shko1259 Год назад
I think a gas planet would make him fall into its core
@shko1259

But if he trained in the moon, he would be really weak.

Do you guys have a recording of MJ's dunk from side view I'm doing some calculations on the dunk from the raw video but all the ones I found were of a moving camera.

So that's how they filmed the half court dunk scene in Space Jam. Mj had to go to the moon!
