"Do you think that's air you're breathing?" GREAT line. He's trying to get Neo to understand that everything, EVERYTHING is a simulation. Nothing is real. It's why the kid at the Oracle's told Neo "There is no spoon". He's right. It's just code. Once you realize that it doesn't actually exist can you manipulate it. That's why he doesn't die at the end after being shot. He finally understood that it's all just code. The bullets didn't kill him because they're not bullets, and he's not flesh and blood, not in the Matrix. The others can manipulate the Matrix partially because they understand part of that, but still accept it as a world in and of itself, hence why they can make gravity defying leaps and such. Neo is the only one who fully understands that it's all just lines of code, and that code can be manipulated by his brain since he is jacked into it. To this day our scientists are trying to determine if our reality is, in fact, just a computer simulation. How would we know? With a sophisticated enough system able to run trillions of operations per second or more, it's feasible that our entire reality is simulated. Shit, how do we know if anyone ELSE is real, or are they just programs? It's a real mindfuck, and this film was revolutionary back in 99 when it came out.
@Aeroldoth3

The Oracle told him "you've got the gift, but it's like you're waiting for something... Your next life maybe..." Neo died, came back to life (born inside the matrix, as the prophesy says, as opposed to being grown then placed inside) and was IMMEDIATELY the One. So cool.

@@ArcaneStrain Also, the Oracle was very intelligent with her words. She didn't specifically say Neo wasn't the One. She said enough for Neo to consider himself just an average joe so he wouldn't even reconsider for a second, dying to save Morpheus. Think about what difference it would have made to know he is the One and how important he was. He would have been a little less selfless.

There is also a really fun theory that Smith is actually the One: born inside the Matrix (after being shattered by Neo), he could change what he wanted, and he'd herald the destruction of the Matrix.
@rhoward9302
@rhoward9302 3 года назад
The fun thing about The Matrix is how good a job they did of keeping everything under wraps when this released. They had a whole "What is The Matrix?" campaign and all. I went in having absolutely no idea what the movie was about and was so blown away, I had to go back and see it in the theater 2 more times. One of the reasons the movie works so well is it's just an updated version of a very old idea--Plato's Allegory of the Cave. 2000 years ago, Plato had kind of a "what if" idea--what if we were chained up inside of a cave and the real world was outside, but we were unaware of it because the only thing we could see were the shadows on the wall? The Wachowskis brilliantly reimagined the cave as a computer simulation and, well, this is the result.
@lotuswraith
@lotuswraith 3 года назад
There is a lot of philosophy baked into the Matrix movies. Part of Neo's arc is his gradual acceptance of determinism when he was very vocally a proponent of free will at the beginning of the movie. The Matrix asks the characters and the audience several times "what is real" and "what defines reality" which are deep philosophical questions. The use of color to denote the worlds of the physical, the mental and (in later films) the spiritual by color coding those worlds in blue, green and yellow respectively. Even things like the characters' names have significance; Morpheus is the god of sleep in Greek mythology and in the Matrix he spends his time trying to wake people up and free their minds; Neo literally means "new" as he is something the other characters haven't seen before and acts as an agent of change; even the ship (the Nebuchadnezzar) was named after a king who rebuild Babylon, which could be seen as an allegory for the crew's mission to rebuild human civilization by fighting the machines (who are out metaphorical Assyrians). The more you watch the Matrix movies, the more questions you find to ask.

Not only did the special effects and “Bullet Time” have a huge influence on the industry, the way the actions scenes were shot was also huge. The actors trained heavily for 5-6 months, and the shots were made using much fewer cuts and wires to show the choreography and keep it as seamless as possible. No western action film had required that preparation before, it was inspired by eastern martial arts films, and the quality difference was obvious and impactful. Batman Begins (the Nolan trilogy in general) had The Matrix to thank for its influence on the industry.

Done a little differently in the first movie, actually. They planned out the path of the virtual camera ahead of time, and placed a series of still cameras along that path, rigged to fire at just the right times to give the appearance of slow motion. And they still had to clean it up in post, because the timing wasn't perfect, and if I recall correctly, they had to fill in some frames. For the _next_ movies, they used a bank of cameras and special software to interpolate viewpoints, so they could decide on camera angles later on. And they also made virtual CG versions of the actors for use in some of the more extreme shots.

I love how the whole trilogy marries technology to mysticism. The Oracle is basically just a really advanced predictive algorithm, but still pretty much clairvoyant. (Sequel spoilers) The One is technically a sort of benchmark test for each version update of the matrix, but still the Power of Love makes Neo the strongest and breaks the cycle. Unknown to the audience the Oracle told her that the man she loved would be the One. She admits that she believes it but is super hesistant because it's more of an admission to herself. Cypher says it would take "some kind of a miracle" which happens almost immediately after Trinity answers. The second time this happens is the finale of the movie. But the execs thought the audience wouldn't get it, so the idea was dropped. @NolanEP I think they were going to use the 'residual self-image' concept, which Morpheus tells Neo about to explain why he looks a bit different when jacked in. So the basic idea is already embedded in the movie. It seems to imply that you would only look *totally* different in the Matrix if you had some deep-seated, strong inner conviction about your true self. I don't know if many people have a deep conviction that they're a different race, although I've heard of one or two examples. But quite a few people *are* convinced they are (or should be) the other sex, and go through hell and high water to get as close as possible. It's a common enough phenomenon that it's been studied for a century and been in the DSM for decades. It could well be a strong enough psychological force to affect your Matrix body. As for whether people have a strongly held self-image of themselves as youthful even as they get older... hmm, don't know, but it's an interesting idea. In any case, I reckon it's a shame the Switch idea wasn't used. After all, the male actor was going to appear in the real world and the female one in the Matrix. That might have given people a hint about how Wachowski-style transgender really works. Which isn't necessarily how the Wachowskis think it works...
@justmeeagainn

Do we really have to make everything about transgenders these days? There’s nothing in the story that even hints at that. Please keep your agenda to yourself.

@SchrodingersTransCat 3 года назад
@@justmeeagainn Er... you do know that both the Wachowskis (who made the movie) transitioned a few years ago? And they officially confirmed that the Matrix was a trans allegory last year? There are a few RU-vid videos about the hidden trans symbolism in the movie. Worth a look just from a film analysis perspective. Examples: - Neo ditches his old name, Mr Anderson, and claims his new identity. - Morpheus refers to the Agents as the 'gatekeepers'--an old term for the docs who decide whether you qualify for hormone treatment or not. - The famous speech from Morpheus--'there's something wrong with the world, you've felt it your entire life, but you don't know what it is'--aptly sums up the inner experience of many trans people who transition late in life. - The use of pills (red/blue) may be a reference to hormone medication. - The BDSM club near the start of the movie is an obvious reference to ... wait, I've said too much, shutting up ... And my agenda may not quite be what you think. ;)

As cool as that concept is, I’m glad they didn’t use it. I don’t think audiences were ready for that in 99. (The movie was already somewhat of a mindfuck without that). I do love that concept tho. And I think it would work well now, if the movie had been made this year. 🖤

Yes, there's a massive difference between a film like The Matrix - which raises many questions to build intrigue which are (mostly) answered later - and Tenet - which raises many questions, keeps raising questions, buries the answers or doesn't directly answer them, raises some more questions, mixes in the soundtrack so loudly you can't hear the dialogue which supposedly answers the questions (but probably just raises more questions), raises yet further questions, has no appealing or charismatic characters, raises some more questions then allows the viewer to lose all hope as they struggle to fathom how such incomprehensible drivel is from the same director of intricate yet perfectly understandable films like The Dark Knight, The Prestige and Memento. We expected more from you, Mr Nolan. Or less (unanswered questions)!!

Neo didn´t die at the end of the first movie. It was his residual-self image that behave like it was wounded by bullets. In the moment he beliefs, that he die, his heart stopped beating. But there is no spoon. So in the moment he belief, that there is no residual self image, he understand, what trinity said to him: You can´t be dead. So he stood up, because he was never dead. Like hes not bending the spoon, but the residual self image, which are actually not there. So he bends himself and the residual self image just behave the way, he made it happen to behave that way.

These are my opinions based on this movie, I won't say anything about the other movies. In the time this movie was made, programs and data were commonly exchanged using disks. The whole uploading/d0wnloading thing hadn't taken off yet. So by showing us Neo selling a disk it clues us in that he's a computer hacker selling illicit software. Since we learn the Matrix is essentially a computer program, a world simulation, you can see the implications of Neo being a hacker. Morpheus tells him that when he's ready Neo won't have to dodge bullets. That's because the guns and bullets aren't real, they are part of the computer programmed world. So once Neo has ascended to become The One he will be a powerful hacker who can control things inside the Matrix. Thus he won't need to dodge bullets. That's also why he can fly at the end. He has total power inside the Matrix to do just about anything.

I just had a random thought about this movie. I searched the answer on Google, and here it is. The cops in the Matrix are real people, not NPCs. So when Neo and the gang killed them, they were killing real people. That sucks, but they had no choice. They were fighting the system and these poor people unknowingly helped the system (Matrix). Also when agents possessed a person in the Matrix, they actually possessed real people. Those people wouldn't remember a thing when the possession was over, and if the agents died, those people died for real. Imagine real dead people being chucked out of their pod when Neo and the gang fought the agents.

Those discs at the start are minidiscs, they were intended as a replacement for CD's but arrived at the wrong time, as the reducing cost of rewritable CD's and the growth of digital distribution (mp3 & associated players etc) meant the format struggled to take off, slowly fading away. The Matrix is so good because of the many, many layers within it. When the film was made, the Wachowski siblings were both still in the closet and have since come out as trans women. Whether consciously or subconsciously (likely the latter, based on interviews), reflections of that aspect of the sisters lives can be found in the film. There is the individual (Neo) gradually accepting the truth of who they are; taking the red pill to release ones true self (at that time, the most common pills given to trans women were red); Agent Smith never using Neo's name, instead using his old - dead - name; Switch was intended to be a man in the real world and a woman in the Matrix, but that got stopped by - ironically enough - the suits. There is much there that can be found, but I'd be here for a long time listing it all.

So here's what I'll say. The Matrix is my favorite movie of all time. I've seen it dozens of times. However, the trilogy is not even in my top 10 because of what the sequels did. And I only watched them once. It was even worse for Quentin Tarantino. He not only disliked the sequels, but they actually had the effect of lowering his appreciation of the first one. Don't get me wrong. They're not "bad" per se. After all, they were big budget films with really high production value, state-of-art effects (for that time), and a lot of action. But they fell woefully short of the bar set by the first movie. For my money, The Matrix works as a stand-alone movie, and in some ways, the universe introduced in it is slightly tainted by the sequels. My two sense.

The sequels get a bad rap, and while they aren't as...elegant as the first one (if that makes sense) I think the ideas they explore are incredibly interesting, but way more complicated, which means the sequels are a LOT more dense with info. The second movie especially is a lot more talky, but the action is way more over-the-top in a good way (mostly) but that makes the film feel kind of start and stop unlike the first film which struck the right balance of exposition/action. The third film is the most divisive. It has some answers if you put the pieces together, but it leaves a lot up to viewer interpretation. They were filmed back to back, so they're essentially one big movie. Also, like others have said, watch the Animatrix first. It's nine animated short films that delve deeper into the world of the Matrix. A few of them tie in directly (either narrativly or thematically) with the sequels to a degree that I think is essential to getting the "full experience." There's also a video game, Enter the Matrix, that takes place right before, during, and after the second movie. It's meant to be played between the second and third films and follows a bunch of side characters and fills in some parts of the story that are only alluded to in the films. Problem is the game is uh...well let's just say it was rushed for release, so you're better off either watching a lets play or just watching the 40 or so minutes of live action cutscenes they filmed exclusively for the game.

Feel like the reason people hate on there other two is mostly because it can be very confusing, like they watch it once and call it bad cuz it didnt make alot of sense and dont even wanna try and watch it twice to try and understand the whole concept of the trilogy, because when you finally understand the whole thing and understand all the details, and figure out how neo can do all the stuff he does, it dosent become super unrealistic, except for the zion part in the third movie, because the matrix is basically just a video game, with real humans inside, but neo is basically the game writer/admin that can manipulate the codes to do what he wants to do, so because of that everything does make sense, it isnt super unrealistic, because in the game world, the writer can do whatever the fuck he wants to do, so to the people that dont really like the sequels try and watch the movies in another perspective and try and understand how everything make sense and how neo can do what he does, its really interesting. And when all of that stuff is understood its just two great movies in general with bunch of cool action and a really mindfuck and interesting story to it, cuz when you do watch the matrix it gets you really thinking, if we are living in a simulation or no. So i just think in general people hating on the movies are not really trying to understand the whole concept of everything, like all of the caracters have cool purposes and cool ideology. so hey stop hating and give the movies another shot, maybe youll like em or not, worth trying.
