But back when this film came out in 1999 there were only a few similar films like it. Dark City (released the same time as The Matrix), The 13th Floor (again same time) and Lawnmower Man 1992/1993 ish. To an extent. First, this is clearly a gimmick. No one hasn’t not watched a single movie in their whole life. "I guess if we have to." One of the things mentioned was the idea that there wasn't any blue in the matrix, so the sky is always overcast and gray, the blue's got tinted into greens, and it was all just to put you off that something wasn't right about what you were seeing, and when you got out, the color palette opened up and it was like the audience was released too. It's one of those old school artistry tricks that you don't notice until you're told they did it, and then you realize how well manipulated you are in the movies... and it's amazing. I remember seeing this 400 miles away from home with a buddy on opening weekend at a theater that doesn't exist anymore, and yeah... it was transformational.

If the idea of human as batteries are to hard to swallow, I can mention that the original idea for the use of humans was as processors to handle vast amounts of data. Great reaction! A lot of people keep on misinterpreting the Oracle scene. She never said verbatim, "Neo, you're not the one." The point of the scene is this: he has to know that he's "the one" for himself. If he doesn't know, then that's as good as him not being "the one". Think about it, if you have 10 million dollars available to you, but you don't know it, then that's as good as you not having the 10 million dollars.

SPOILERS FOR MATRIX RELOADED/REVOLUTIONS Based on the scenes in Reloaded with The Merovingian where they seem to be making a point about how you can influence people's emotions/actions with food/getting them to ingest things, I was hoping there would be a big reveal in Revolutions that there was some extra significance to the Oracle giving Neo that cookie, manipulating him into breaking the cycle instead of making the "logical" decision. Instead they just never bring it up again, so I don't know what was the point of any of that.

yeah. like morpheus said, she told him what he needed to hear. also i think she maybe wanted to give the impression that he wasn't the one, then told him that morpheus was gonna sacrifice himself anyway. if you don't believe you're the one, you wouldn't want someone like him to give their life for you, so you'd probably try to do everything you can to prevent that, or sacrifice yourself to help him. in so doing, you'll find out if you are the one, in which case morpheus will be saved, or not, and you'll end up dead.

Whereby his idea was that if prisoners are chained together since the very beginning of their lives in a dark cave, they start believing that this is their reality, but if one prisoner escapes and sees the real world, they would see that the real world is unlike the cave he knew all his life. The chained up prisoners upon hearing this from the escapes prisoner would believe he is just a madman, and they would continue believing that this cave was the only reality that ever existed.

Sentience is the ability to recognize self. The machines exist because they want to just as we do. They place the same value on life and freedom that humans do, but when humanity tried to destroy them, they retaliated and enslaved humanity as a power source. The humans still plugged in to the matrix not only power the simulation, but also the machine race.
@Muckylittleme
@Muckylittleme 2 года назад
It all comes down to free will. You can't have free will in the Matrix as I see it. How could you know your thoughts and actions are still your own once you are plugged in since the Matrix is in your mind at that point and manipulating your reality? Sure, we can't know we have free will in our reality but if we do not then the Universe is deterministic which means our lives right down to every thought are preordained. In fact, since the Universe is causal from the moment of its creation there is no mechanism that allows for free will so if it exists then it must be endowed upon us through a supernatural force (outside of nature/the Universe) and this is what we refer to as God if we are spiritual. This is the counter argument to the idea we are in a simulation as evidenced by the fact everything is basically one's and zero's (neg/pos. on/off true/false etc) and as such can be simulated just so long as we have enough information and the computing power. Where does the genome within our DNA for the idea of free will and good and evil come from? The answer must be that it was innate within the big bang just like consciousness and that is where it starts to get properly deep because that means that consciousness isn't a product of our minds but something we tap into and our thoughts are filtered consciousness but filtered by what (soul?) and how (free will?) And why was it innate within the Universe to create sentient beings that would ask where and how the Universe began? It is almost as if the Universe is having an existential crisis and asking what it is and we are product of that schism made manifest by our profound desire to understand the meaning of our lives.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 2 года назад

@@StCerberusEngel Sorry, it wasn't a direct response but I was late to the party and new comments don't get read so I posted in the first popular comment that had a little relevance. Your comments are right although the instinct for self preservation does not require sentience, we see it in all animal life. A machine/AI can never achieve sentience IMO because there is no mechanism for free will since it is all algorithms and weighting one outcome over another. Also AI cannot feel pain or loss or a concept of its own mortality which is a huge part of the human experience and our development and motivation. That is why the question of free will and sentience is so fundamental to our existence and why we developed a sense of spirituality and developed religions, it is innate within our humanity. Sorry for the hijack.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 2 года назад
@@Muckylittleme I wasn't saying sentience is required for self-preservation, but that self-preservation is part of sentience. And as far as machines gaining sentient thought, well...it's a fictional movie universe, so I'm basing it on the context of that. Same goes for the "combined with a form of fusion" line that handwaves the humans-as-batteries concept's implausibility. It's what the film presents, so that's what we have to work with. A flaw, perhaps, but not one big enough to break suspension of disbelief IMO. Results will vary though. I don't really think I have anything to hijack. Just thought it a strange "reply" as it were.
@Muckylittleme
@Muckylittleme 2 года назад
@@StCerberusEngel From what I understand the humans were supposed to be a neural net used by the AI but they thought the audience was too dumb to get the concept so changed it. In the sequels it’s explained that the machines have a civilization of their own. There are programs born without any specific purposes with parents and everything and they just live their lives. They have their own ‘machine city’ in that exists virtually (the color’s gold as apposed to green), that’s what they’ve been harvesting human energy for. maybe it's a bit misanthropic, but one of the more interesting pieces of dialogue for me was when smith says that "humans multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. the only way they can survive is to spread to another area. there is another organism that follows the same pattern... a virus." it's kinda dark, but if you really think about it, true. we have no natural predators, unlike every other organism on earth. there's nothing to keep us in check, no balance. the only real way to control human population are micro organisms - bacteria, parasites, and viruses. if nature could speak, i'm pretty sure they would call us a cancer, while as humans we think of ourselves as the opposite.
@r.g.o3879
@r.g.o3879 2 года назад
As a historian with a minor in anthropology I find it interesting how quickly we forget all the millenia of our past. When you say we humans have no natural predators you are only referring to the recent few thousand years. Prior to the era of city building and the first kingdoms and empires came into existence we had plenty of natural predators basically anything with Sharp teeth and claws and a lot of speed. In the last few millennia we conquered and in many cases exterminated most of those species that once challenged us for control of this world. Today they are kept in zoos, refuges and in many instances museums, often rarely more than a memory. Today we have no challengers other than other humans and have chosen to forget the accendency we now possess over this world is of fairly recent origin.

@@r.g.o3879 Hmm. I agree with much of what you're saying, but if you have time, I've a theory I'd like to run by you... We do have natural predators, as it is a basic truism that Nature Always Prevails. As you point out, we ascended until we became dominant, as Nature allowed, planned, however you choose to see it. The theory I have that's incomplete: As humans became dominant, Nature put an apex predator into our midst, Terminator-style. It looks like us on the outside, but is "programmed" to hate/destroy us on the inside. The deranged. The insane. The psychotic and sociopathic. The serial killer is the created natural enemy of human beings. This creation is designed to thin "the herd." To help keep the balance. We see them as evil. Nature knows they're just tools in the arsenal What do you think of this possibility?

for me, it's really timeless because it touches on a lot of ideas and themes that have turned out to be true. the simulation theory, for example, wasn't too believable back then, but now, seeing how realistic computer graphics and physics simulations get every year, it's not too hard to imagine what it would be like in 50 years, or 100 or 200 years. we use to play games like pac-man, now we have games like forza where if you took a snapshot, it would be indistinguishable from reality. add in augmented reality and in a few hundred years, it's not a stretch to see how the line between reality and virtual can be blurred. also, the advancement of AI and the ability to download information is slowly gaining momentum. there was a point where we thought no machine could ever beat a human in the game of Go, and now it can beat the top players simultaneously. then you have the takeover of AI for truck driving and taxis. i do believe in a few hundred years, maybe sooner, all highways and public transport will be controlled by AI. fast, efficient, safe, and no more slow drivers or dangerous drivers. all regulated by computers. and, i believe elon musk is working on a microchip that can be surgically implanted in the brain. in the short term, i think it's designed to repair cognitive deficiencies, but long-term, i think the possibilities are endless.

Great reaction! This concept originated from the philosopher René Descartes who lived in the 1600th .His answer to the question "how do I know that I exist" was "cogito ergo sum" meaning, "I think, therefore I am". If he has the ability to form the thought, that means that somewhere he does exist, but he cannot disprove if he's in a simulation, or just a brain in a jar somewhere dreaming. From your reaction it sounds like you would take Cyphers side, being able to create a perfect simulated life "on the farm, with the kids", as he says "ignorance is bliss" :)

One of the biggest sins that can be attributed to The Matrix as a movie, if we can blame it for anything at all, is popularising solipsism, i.e. the view or theory that the self is all that can be known to exist, and that everything outside of the self is potentially a simulation or a fraud. On the one hand, it's good to question things like authority and systemic injustices, but when your point of view is so tied up in not being able to tell what's real and what's not, you end up seeing everyone else as potentially not real and thus making empathy for others next to impossible. Why care about world hunger, racism or institutional injustice if the world itself isn't "real"? The crew of the Nebuchadnezzar don't seem to give a lot of thought to the number of people they kill within the Matrix, whether they're possessed by Agents or not - what is the consequence of that? Do they die, or just get reset? The movie never tells us. Now, admittedly, that's not entirely the fault of the filmmakers - more an unwanted side effect of trying to introduce a very complex topic to a majority of people - but it's very easy to draw a line from this movie to the kinds of behaviour that they would almost certainly not approve of IRL, whether that connection is justified or not. And sadly there's no real right answer to that conundrum.
@runki9413
@runki9413 2 года назад
@@radicaladz Well isn't that the driving force of religion? How our world isn't the true one, just a temporary torment until the eternal afterlife. Surely that is one of many burdens off theism. I'm sure the crew justifies it the same way most killers do by thinking "now they're set free". But this is exactly what's great about movies like this, they create a debate and don't just echo the boring 'good vs evil' concept most of western media has.
@radicaladz
@radicaladz 2 года назад
@@runki9413 - kind of answering your own question there, imho, but yes, it is a debate worth having, and much as people turn their noses up at the sequels, you can see them trying to tackle that dilemma with the inclusion of the Exile Programs, and how the layers of control within the Matrix run deeper than previously known.

OMFG - what a master class in control. How can you not even emotionally react or reassure - "it's fine" - but just let her experience the movie on her own without being sheparded to a reaction. Dude, you are a master.

I think the thing I enjoyed most in this reaction was that unlike other reactions, Mrs. Movies guesses were wrong every time. Really highlights it as a bad habit when you're wrong.

You guys need to watch the Animatrix. It's a collection of video shorts, some of them tie directly with the movies. It explains some things of how they got to this point in the canon. When I do my Matrix marathon I put The Animatrix between the first and second because it sets up the second movie events.

Fun fact: The room Neo dies outside at the end of the movie is the exact same room Trinity is in at the beginning of the movie. Also, allegedly, in the original script the robots used us for computing power. Not for electric power.

I think these two are great reactors but after the movie was over during their discussion I think the Lady was just overthinking the plot line a little bit,which is not a bad thing in itself I guess.Her comments during the movie told me she is quite an intelligent Lady (IMHO).

Hard to not overthink with a movie as layered as this one. I probably took it too far but there are just so many things to consider (moral, cultural, political) it’s definitely a thinker. Probably the main reason I never watched it until now. You have to want to watch a movie like this that can challenge your own beliefs about yourself. Thanks for watching with us though!

When Neo shows his passport, if you pause and flip screen upside down, the Expiration Date on it is 09-11-01.
