'I would die for them!' "How interesting." He takes his goggles off and sees how absolutely sincere she is, and then of course that follw-up moment "Not for me!" kind of I think suggests he didn't believe he was worth redeeeming - or anything at all, and Fry dying for him was a significant awakening.

That exchange also plays off the fact that he overheard Johns and her talking about how she'd nearly dumped the crew, so hearing how she'd changed in terms of preferring her own survival above all intrigued him.

Before Battlestar Galactica became the best TV show ever there was Farscape. Claudia Black, the darkhaired woman along with Ben Browder played one of the best couples I think I've ever seen depicted on TV. They got so comfortable in their characters that in the later seasons the writers stopped writing dialogue for them and instead wrote instructions and they improvised most of their scenes together. No idea if it would get any views but I'm 100% sure you'd both love it. The Jim Henson Company made the aliens, it's mostly well acted (especially Ben and Claudia), well written, proper sci-fi with some seriously insane things happening and lots of world-building, good music and really fun effects.

Well, Farscape is my fav and that's my _"frelling"_ opinion. Original, with lots of drama and humor mixed in, along with numerous made up 'swear' words (back when they couldn't use much swear words on regular TV), unlike BSG, however, Farscape was cut short by SyFy due to production cost. Fans of the show, like myself, had to write in and beg advertisers (like KFC) to lean on SyFy to not end the show on such a shitty cliffhanger. The suits at the network agreed to a mini-series to sort of wrap things up. For my taste, The Expanse, Babylon 5, Firefly and various pre-woke Star Trek & Star Wars series are all excellent additions in anyone's sci-fi space-based library.

I think there's also just her straight unalloyed (arguably) altruism. Riddick's not seen a lot of that, or any of it. Not sure he thought it existed. It's also one of those neat little ethics problems; is it worse to kill 5 strangers or 5 acquaintances? Pretty much everyone will answer the latter, but how do you justify that beyond "it makes me feel worse to kill people I've come to see as "people""? Not like your personal knowledge of a person adds or subtracts anything from their existence (excluding any actual relationship between the two of you). A variety of the "trolley" problem. A deceptively-layered movie.

Great character arcs with her and Riddick. I think that was the first time Riddick had seen what you might call "true" altruism. There had certainly been decency in characters before that, particularly with the religious teacher and his students, but that's all arguably altruism with a layer of self-interest; ie the teacher had an investment in his students and hence benefited personally from protecting them, especially as he presumably wanted to see them follow in his footsteps. Not that there's anything wrong with altruism mixed with self-interest, but that was something Riddick understood and expected. Someone risking themselves for others with absolutely nothing to gain in the process, aside from a moral redemption that nobody is imposing on them but themselves, a redemption they can't be tempted-away from even at the cost of their own life? That's a new one.

Solar systems with three stars are actually extremely common - the myth is that they would necessarily have hot worlds. That part all depends on distance from the star(s), but I can really respect this movie, as much as it's got all the cheesy horror tropes, that they represent an alien world in such a unique way. So much sci fi just depicts alien worlds as some extended version of an earth biome. Desert world, arctic world, jungle world, etc.

I also like all of the Riddick movies. My husband and I saw this in theaters, we still really like it. To this day, "Looks clear" can enter into conversation randomly. And " Kept calling it murder when I did it", next to "Looks clear" remains a favorite quote. And when you get to the end, remember the Caroline paid the RANSOM for Riddick's soul. Nothing like having a quote from a Different movie haunting your thought. Would it haunt Riddick? "Pay it forward." "How interesting" Riddick found it interesting because during the crash she did something that he understood when she was purging the load, dropping section after section of the ships's partitions - or just one unit - of passengers in stasis, Sleeping, and helpless. Thank you for even mentioning this yourselves, which you discussed these points while I was typing. Looking forward to the. Next Riddick reaction. I like II, emphasizing that since the ship in I was carrying colonists to space, that it's big enough out there to spread out, and that different cultures will evolve due to their different experiences...their different traumas. 4 or 5 communities...and races were - Are revealed in II, and I do find them interesting, but Riddick's story arc so far, my favorites, or ranking in this franchise are 1, 3 and then 2. That's just preference, and getting to 3 by going through 2 is definitely fun character growth for Riddick, and US, the audience too. Riddick and Malcolm Reynolds from FIREFLY are wild characters. They're primarily seen (unconsciously) by everyone around them as a reflection of the person's own dark side, of the moral and personal failings they have or think they could. Everyone sees something wrong with *themselves* when they look at them and don't like it. (Note that these two characters don't undergo a ton of character development themselves, though Riddick has a huge turn at the end when it really, finally sinks in that not everyone is terrible and going to repeat the hurt that made him who he is.) Other characters basically test their own morals and souls by interacting with Riddick and Mal. Often they fail, and sometimes they die even when they pass the test against their own weaknesses.

That was a really great thing the film did; made everything seem very pat and simple and expected in the beginning, and then gradually turned it all upside-down. Symbolic parallel to the planet, where everything seemed straightforward (if not exactly pleasant) in the light until the demons came out to play in the dark? Made you think about your presumptions on everything, even on assuming that a lower-budget sci-fi action film called "Pitch Black" couldn't be more than just a space slug-fest (not to rag on slug-fests, but you get the idea). As others have said, this one's got a deceptive amount of depth. It seems like a run-of-the-mill (good!) sci-fi action movie, which is fine, but it peels back layer after layer. Interesting to hear Mrs. Movies reference Alien, because I think there's both superficial and deeper connections between the two, including in the pacing.

In their fight outside the shuttle while the others are in the cave, Riddick asks Catherine "Would you die for them?". He asks her this because he was awake during the crash and heard her declare "I'm not gonna die for them!" before pulling the lever to eject the passengers. When she tells him, "Yes! I would die for them." he replies, "Interesting." For all the things he is, Riddick is someone who notices. He watched her change her entire outlook during their crisis. So later when she is taken by the bioraptors he yells, "Not for me!" up to her. This is to assure her in her last breaths that he will get the others away because when she found him she said, "I said I die for them, not for you." to get him moving. When Catherine is taken it's left ambiguous in the camera shot whether it was the bioraptor that cuts her or Riddick. It was a subject of many fan theory videos in the years after the film released.

Pitch Black really stood out to me when I first saw it when it came out. I still like it better than the Alien movies. Chronicles of Riddick was a really cool and unique concept revolving around the anti-hero fighting another evil sort of story and the antagonist(s) really suit this universe's lore (also Karl Urban is in it) and is very creative and, again, unique. But the film doesn't quite measure up to Pitch Black's greatness despite that. I still love it, but many call it the lesser of the films. Riddick (the third film) kind of goes back to the roots and I think really rivals the first one in a lot of ways. I still haven't decided which one is my favourite. I've been waiting for the forth one for like a decade now because Riddick ends on a cliffhanger and Vin Deasel kept teasing the 4th film entitled "Furya" for years and years. A few years ago he let loose on social media that the script was finally done. I think he's making all these Fast/Furious films to fund its production (like he basically did for Riddick). I believe he bought the total rights to the Riddick franchise and owns them himself now. Also, there's a short Riddick anime film set between Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick called Dark Fury that I recommend watching.

I think Riddick latched onto Carolyn in the beginning because she did what he would have done. She tried to purge the passengers to save herself. From what I hear they put in the stunt where Riddick brought his shackled hands over his head to get off the pole because Vin Diesel can actually do that. The problem was that he couldn't do it when his hands were bound together, so that had to use a bit of cinematic trickery.

When you said "Hopefully they don't need those things." I was chuckling to myself. "Those things" were passenger pods. There were people in cryo-sleep in those containers. Hence that's why Fry says "I'm not going to die for them!"
@paulonius42
@paulonius42 Год назад
Incorrect. The first two sections ejected were not passenger pods. It's when she starts to dump the third section, which has the people in it, that Fry says that. Then the crash ripped most of that section away as well. So stop chuckling. They understood it correctly.
@patrickcromwell7554

@@paulonius42 So then where did the extra dud come from?? the one that was shot by the Australian guy?? He was NOT in their pod. he was in another pod and he thought he was the only survivor. Where did he come from if NOT from one of the first two ejected pods?? The last pod has the two flight officers, The father and his three sons, Jack, johns, the two Aussies and the antique's dealer. Do you think they just left someone there and started to look around THEN he woke up and showed himself?? Or maybe he had been walking for some time and finally came across THIS group. seeing as he was out of breath and sweating A LOT, I'm guessing it's that he was a survivor of the "purged" pods Fry dumped. She sauid she wasn't going to die for them at the last pod, yes, but her intent was very clear. She'll dump ALL the passengers to save herself; which she had already started to do even before the other officer said anything.
@paulonius42
@paulonius42 Год назад
@@patrickcromwell7554 That's a lot of words but you're still wrong. The "extra dude" was from the same passenger pod as the main characters. We literally watch that section of the ship being ripped apart as it drags across the ground. The back end of the passenger/cryo section is ripped off ON THE GROUND, ON SCREEN. So the "extra dude" came from there, not from the two cargo pods that were ejected hundreds or thousands of miles away from the crash site. (Maybe you need to rewatch the opening crash sequence again for a refresher?) This isn't a debate. You're simply wrong about what happens. It's okay. We're all wrong sometimes. Just relax, knowing that she didn't murder 2/3 of the passengers after all.
@patrickcromwell7554
@patrickcromwell7554 Год назад
@@paulonius42 You're a pompous ass. There's NO evidence whatsoever that he was in their pod. YOU just want it to be that way for your argument. The evidence we SEE doesn't fit. It's clear he's been out there for quite some time trying to look around. The debris is still clearly in walking distance of the pod they were standing on top of. And I don't need to rewatch the crash scene there's NOTHING suggesting that the pods she ejected were NOT filled with passengers. YOU are simply assuming she wouldn't DO that without orders. It is very clear that she has absolutely NO problem dumping people to save her own life.The ONLY reason she didn't dump the pod with the main characters is because it malfunctioned. She didn't even try to save them. As far as she was concerned it was "fuck them I'm surviving this crash." There's nothing saying she didn't drop people in their sleeper pods; just your assumption.

Pitch Black is a study in role reversal, the theme is recurrent in the film. Riddick begins as a villain but becomes a hero. Johns begins as a hero but becomes a villain. Carolyn begins as someone who doesn't care about the people in her charge, and ends up willingly sacrificing herself for them. Jack begins as a wise-cracking young boy and becomes a vulnerable young girl. Even the planet itself reverses roles -- changing from a world locked in eternal sunlight to a world locked in lasting darkness.

The writer/director on this film, David Twohy, has done surprisingly little of note since, given how well this film is put-together. He's had hits, to be sure, but with the level of quality here, you'd kinda expect to have seen a lot more. He is writing and directing the fourth Riddick film (as he did the other two), Riddick: Furya, which was just announced this past February. Another film he wrote/directed which kinda flew under the radar is a WW2 sub-based horror movie called "Below". Worth a watch! It will stick with you, though. Not gory, as I recall, but very tense.
