How the hell did we go from this to Alexis Sanchez?
@camdened123456
@camdened123456 4 года назад
A willingness to consume at cost from the fans. A fear of missing out from Manchester United. A player with a good bargaining stance in Alexis Sanchez. There's a lot of money in football. Manchester United thought Alexis Sanchez would help them gain more of it by increasing on field success (/Denying Manchester City another good player). Alexis Sanchez had only 6 months on his contract so the transfer fee was small. (Think of his salary as £200k a week + £40m transfer and people, at the time, wouldn't have batted an eyelid).

I thought you would have mentioned Sunderland in this video regarding them breaking the Maximum wage regulations after Trevor Ford's autobiography revealed that he and other players at the clubs were receiving illegal payments and gifts from the club. Quite a number of wealthy board members were suspended from football (Sunderland were know as "the Bank of Engalnd" club in the 40s and 50s due to the high transfer fees they were paying), along with Trevor Ford. Sunderland were relegated a season later, in 1958 for the 1st time in their history and you could say they have never recovered this, as they have only finished in the top 10 of the top flight 3 times after this incident.

Too much cash being concentrated at the top. I can live with West Brom maybe never competing for an EPL title but right now even very big clubs are being completely locked out of progressing. The principles are the same as before, it becomes a case of who's willing to pump more money into their club to win ( look at city and Chelsea for example ). Also the scale is drastically different now. Back in the 60's, the average income was £25/ week , so if a player earns £100/ week it's 4 times the average wage. Average wage now is around £600/ month now, and players are easily getting more than 20 times that, in some cases almost 100 times ! only the elite can afford it and it stifles competition.

They are ruining the sport and player careers in pursue of their own financial gain.

I don't think that it will help much with the competition. Many teams will still be considered prestigious and will get the best players. @@deadmansfire I get what you are saying about it not working with all leagues but if it's just an overall max salary it shouldn't affect the smaller leagues at all. I disagree with saying the current system helps smaller teams get better by offering more money to get players when that's just not what happens, (unless a club is bought by some oil money billionaire) the smaller clubs get priced out by huge clubs spending ridiculous money on wages. It's not sustainable for wages to keep skyrocketing the way they are.
@deadmansfire

@@seanward98 Agree to some degree, although with a cap on players wages clubs with new rich owners may find it harder to get the best players available in my mind. Maybe an overall salary cap,for the whole squad,like in the NBA for example. But there there needs to be a big framework to work around to implement it. At this point I don't know what we can do about it. As long as there is so much money coming in some leagues there won't be an incentive to change. Also for the biggest clubs all this money left in profits will be taken out of the game by the owners.

@@deadmansfire of course other teams are more prestigious but smaller teams are still historical. If a salary cap was in place it would give more incentive for players,especially home town players to remain with their local club. Players will then play for who they actually want to play for. Right now the money is out of control and football is turning more into a circus every year.

I think there should be a max cap again, say 2K a week but separately they can get more money through sponsorship etc, 'cus atm the money they get is disgusting. This way players will be playing for the love of the game instead of those just sitting on the bench/half assing it on the field cus they are just naturally gifted and stealing a living. so i reckon we will see more hard working/passion in the game from players such as Vardy,Gazza etc in turn will be more enjoyable to watch.

Normal world: governments put laws into place that make sure that there's some kind of minimum wage for workers. Football: a maximum wage with governments allowing that to happen for decades and decades. The world is a weird place sometimes. I just can't understand how such practices weren't illegal and why governments didn't act against them. And you would assume that maximum wages would be illegal as well...

If you remember that footballers are employees working for companies, then the idea of a maximum wage is kinda gross. Like the whole bit about how clubs could control players pre-1956 made me nauseous. It was a form of slavery. It shouldn't really matter how much people get paid so long as there's a robust and progressive tax system to take back all the excess. Putting wage caps in place wouldn't make football cheaper, it would just increase the profit margins of football clubs, making their owners and shareholders even more filthy richer.

Somehow, god knows how, American sports are drastically less neoliberal than European football. Here in the US, franchises have to manage around salary caps and luxury taxes. Transporting the model, ManU would have zero chance of not getting hammered on the cap and luxury taxes. There would be no Galacticos. Ever. You'd see massive star player movement throughout the major football divisions if it were anything like the NBA. Sports here enable some modicum of parity. Football is laughable for its disregard for parity. Teams like Wolves or Burnley crack the top 8 and it's a major story. Here in the US, few care about any team barely squeaking into the playoffs. If you want a comparison, imagine Harry Kane and De Bruyne playing for Burnley, facing off against a Bournemouth side with Pogba and Van Dijk. In Major League Baseball, teams like the Yankees keep small market teams afloat. I love football, but it is economically perverse.
@jdbolick
@jdbolick 4 года назад
Your comments are delusional. Only the NFL has any semblance of parity, as there is a massive spending disparity in Major League Baseball with the Yankees routinely at the top of that list, and they have won nearly a quarter of all World Series since 1903. Meanwhile, the Lakers and Celtics have won 45% of all NBA Championships since 1947.
@rb291189
@rb291189 4 года назад
If the European Leagues were anything like American sports it would be the death of them. You really can't compare sports that have a league system that has promotion and relegation to sports that are closed off. American sports are anti-sports as they are like private clubs, where you are only allowed in by invitation and not by merit. The reason why teams like Wolves or Burnley cracking the top 8 is a big story is because they came up from the Championship not long before, and of course people dont give a crap in the US who goes into the playoffs because its a closed off league. Finally, football is very different to most American sports. In football anyone can beat anyone, dispite the differences in finances, whereas if American sports had the financial differences, I don't think it would be the case.
@blakehunt3546
@blakehunt3546 4 года назад
@@jdbolick The NBA cap existed for one year in the 1940's and didn't come back until 84-85. Many of the championships you're referring to happened when the league had eight teams; the Celtics won through the late 50's and early 60's, Lakers won several in the late 40's/early 50's. Again, minimal competition in those days and no cap. While the NBA has been largely defined by dynasties, it is vastly more competitive now. If you think that has nothing to do with financial structure, you're wrong. The Yankees haven't won anything in 11 years. Baseball uses revenue sharing in lieu of a cap. Hence, the Rays and Marlins have multiple rings between them. Soccer is increasingly defined by the haves and have-nots in a way that you do not see in American professional sports.
