Between being hanged by Undertaker and The Brood at WrestleMania, killing Al Snow’s dog and feeding it to him, wrestling Al Snow in the Kennel From Hell match at Unforgiven, and feuding with The Big Show over Show’s dead dad, Big Bossman had a wild 1999 to say the least.
You missed a great line by JR during the tag team battle royal: "The Headbangers are back after a leg injury for Thrasher, and a terrible gimmick for Mosh!"
That's effin funny. I watched it live, from home, and still have it on VHS. Lol It was so long ago, that I don't remember the quip. Great line! Cheers from Canada
Stephanie's reason for turning on her father was probably one of the best character motivations for a heel turn in WWE history because she definitely had a point that her father used her and put her in danger all for his war against Stone Cold Steve Austin. And she manages to be one of the most hated heels in the company which adds so much to the drama and anticipation for her inevitable comeuppance. The Authority angle definitely needed this version of Stephanie because she was willing to humiliate herself to get people over much like her father did unlike what we got where she rarely, if ever got her comeuppance.
I think her Authority comeuppance was being arrested, and an accidental spear. Definitely wasn't enough because she always came back like nothing happened
what are you talking about? her comeuppance in the Attitude Era was Rock/Jericho encouraging people to call her a slut/whore. It was really not a good time for female heel performers. "willing to humiliate herself" , you just want to call her $2 slut, admit it. Rock used to beat her ass aswell. That kind of stuff would not fly in the PG era.
Agree 100% But in general, you do have to give her ctedit for her insane match against her father, a few years later! What a crazy family! Thanks to all of them for the entertainment. We got our money's worth back then! Story wise of course, not when it comes to actual wrestling. Cheers from Canada
I agree, it was almost perfect. The only thing I would have changed, actually has to do with Jeff Jarett. When Jeff was getting heat for his match against Chyna, he put almost every woman into the figure four, even the makeup lady and Lilian Garcia! It was like, he had lost his mind! He had Steph set up for the move but either Test or shane saved her :( I think they passed overv a great opportunity. It would have got Jeff insane heat for his title match. And Stephanie would have got a lot more sympathy and could blame Vince for not paying enough attention to keep her safe! Wasted opp. IMHO Cheers from Canada
Yeah that storyline was so official! I really miss the days when there was actually some suspense and you would actually be surprised when you seen some of these matches. Nowadays it's so predictable that I literally can call exactly what's going to happen 2 weeks before the Pay-Per-View. Also WWE has this thing where nobody can take a clean loss, so it's always some b******* some interference or roll up! What happened to the days when m************ would just count the lights, then the next night you count the lights for them! If you're good enough character those losses don't matter.
Speaking of Teddy Long's weird character development through WCW and then redoing it in WWF, I remember that weird time about 10 years ago how Nunzio was a ref in WWE.
“Triple H Fears Turkey Jizz” That’s not a sentence that any of us commenting on this video right now expected to read today but yet here we are…..Happy Holiday’s & Merry Christmas🎅🏽🎄
Triple H is probably one of the most layered characters in wrestling. From his attitude, the theme music, and his trunks design. He was always ahead of his time, that man is definitely one of the GREATS
8:59 Good point on Teddy Long's Hall of Fame WWE career, Zane. This is like if Bill Alfonzo returned to the WWE or debuted in TNA (Impact) as a referee and not as a manager blowing his whistle. You called it right down the middle, Z-man.
I think Charles Robinson has 3/4 of that down. Ref'ed in WCW, became a personality, and is (still?) ref-ing in WWE now. Just needs to start a stable and become a GM, then he would have done the full Teddy!
@@kenterminateddq5311 Yeah in continental and in wwf, he said on byte this before that if they couldn't find something for him to do they would just give him a referee shirt. He reffed on a uk tour I just remember them trolling him by chanting "Harvey" at him.
Kane's cage-top flying clothesline was so damn cool and impressive. always especially dangerous when a guy does a air move that involves landing on the feet too. Tjey nailed it
I remember back then everyone got a title shot at the WWF Championship. Guys like Virgil, Repo Man, IRS. I like that they made Big Show a champion that would take on all challenges, whether it was main event, mid-card, or low-card.
It's so amazing to see just how horrible & unforgivable a heel the Big Bossman could be during the Attitude Era, simply because by all accounts Ray Traylor was one of the nicest men ever seen in pro wrestling. You can only imagine that doing all of this abhorrent stuff was so much cathartic fun for Traylor, because he'd never be anything like this in real life.
Thinking back, I would have been cool with that. Not a big run, just a few weeks, as a reward, from Vince, for a job well done :) Also, after Wrestlemania, Boss Man was technically a Zombie! Way before that ECW stupidity. Coming back from the dead is not an easy thing! Cheers from Canada
I was a senior in high school when this went down. Was absolutely shocked when Steph turned on her dad. Yet I fully understood where she came from. Man I need to go back and watch some raw from this era. Great video Z-Man!
I used to own the original UK VHS copy of this PPV, and yes. Miss Kitty was shown uncensored before Sgt. Slaughter covered her up. Also, Val Venis probably learnt that Spanish due to his time in CMLL in Mexico as their World Heavyweight Champion. He had worked in Mexico and Puerto Rico prior to being signed to WWF.
I don’t want to bore you with my life story but I grew up in this era of wrestling and have really fond memories (even if it wasn’t as good in hindsight) but now I work in hospitality and this time of year is really brutal work wise. This videos really keep me going and have gone a long way for my mental health this month. Thanks Brian and have a wonderful Christmas! Keep up the incredible content!
Maaaan looking back at Kurt Angle's few months in the WWF I'm just so glad management stuck with him and gave him a chance, given how fickle Vince especially could be even back then
Vince Mcmahon liked Kurt so he really didn't have nothing to worry about.. like the commenter said above me *"One thing about Vince Mcmahon once he sticks with you he stuck on you no matter what"* look at Roman Reigns for instance..
This is just starting the period i got into wrestling in a big big time. The 1st ppv i saw live was summer slam 2000, i love this era of wrestling, its created a lifelong fan in myself.
Honestly I think the Stephanie being drugged should have been retconned into "she was never drugged" and I think it would have given her even more heat.
My favorite Heel turn of ALL TIME. I was in my early teens so not entirely “smart to the business” as they say...Triple H was (and still is) my favorite wrestler at the time and I had a huge crush on Stephanie..that smile she cracks before they hug is so damn well done. I never saw it coming, blew my mind!
Awww, agreed. I was always an HHH fan. I was the only female wrestling fan I knew as a kid. All the males who watched loved Rock or Austin. I was SO EXCITED when Stephanie turned. I was like "Finally, someone sees in him what I've always seen!" Even as 9yr old, I knew they were meant to be. You can't fake the way Steph beams when they exchange stares. He blushes every time he looks at her. Deeper when he grins. So sweet and evil. #MHE4Life
I had the VHS tape of this show and the part with Miss Kitty/The Kat exposing herself was shown completely unedited! I'm sure it was blurred for the DVD and the Network but not on the videotape!
As ludicrous as the story for the main event was-I totally brought into it. And I think the pre-match promo was really nicely done with some great music choices. This just felt like a very special time in WWF when things were really starting to cook. The making of HHH as main eventer which he solidified a month later in the street fight, Kurt Angle new on the scene, Jericho’s first title and that tag-team Battle Royale really highlighted the depth in that division. Also like JR referring to Australia’s Greg Norman as one of South Africa’s finest golfers.
I actually didn't remember it at the time this video came out, but rewatching this review finally flipped a switch in my head about it. I actually first started watching Smackdown, and thus wrestling in general, literally the episode before the Raw with the wedding, which was a hell of a time to try and learn what all was going on. Hearing about the wedding the next week on the Smackdown afterwards, my first thought was "Yeah, that sounds about right for how it felt like this was gonna go." Thanks for helping me remember that little bit of personal history, Brian.
Happy holidays to you Brian, thank you for all the entertaining content you did for us this year! 😀 I wanted the Boss man to win the WWF championship so bad back then (he was one of my favorites in the early 90's haha). 😂
I really miss those customized entrance stages they had back then and wished they would bring them back... Would certainly add flare to a lot of the shows they have and if there are brawls that happen then they would have a logical excuse to use the stages like they use to.
"'...how do you marry someone without their consent? Shouldn't he go to jail for kidnapping a woman and drugging her?' These are questions you don't have to ask, because wrestling isn't real." - Max Landis
Also implicated raping her too. But...he can't go to jail once he convinces her the ends justified the means because they both were done wrong by her dad. So they can grow into their love by the shared hatred of her father.
If anyone wanted a jumping on point to watch the WWF in 2000, this show and the RAW the next night imo would be the best point. Side note: the RAW following this debuts best looking stage setup with the side trons
That look that The Acolytes give Too Cool as they dance down 2 the ring has never left my brain. 🤣🤣🤣 Mae Young always trying 2 get her 'puppies' out was hilarious.
I know a lot of people nowadays get offended when they see these Attitude Era women's matches but they always bring a smile to my face. I mean it's hot chicks trying to rip each other's clothes off. I'll always be entertained by that.
I might be alone on this but I would like to see Brian Zane cover Stephanie McMahon's run in the early McMahon/Helmsley era. The reason why I say this is because Stephanie's first heel promo on the RAW after Armageddon was quite impressive. Quite frankly, when she isn't yelling or screaming like a pre-Vickie Guerrero banshee, Stephanie McMahon can be a pretty decent heel.
Steph has proven over and over that she can be an excellent heel, she's terrific at getting heat and a crowd reaction. She definitely has inherited that talent from Vince, she's pretty great.
Gotta say, a lifetime around the business absolutely paid off for her, like pretty much immediately imo. She belongs to that section of wrasslin personalities that don't just "get" it, but they really GET it.
Stephanie was 100 percent to turn on Vince Stephanie:And he outsmarted you by making business personal, and thats something you know all about dad isnt it making business personal, ohh you look confused like like you dont remember I guess its been a long time its been almost a year since you had me abducted you had me locked in a rat infested basement with no light i thought no one was coming for me you put me there you put me there, the you had someone looking and my personal and private things but then the icing in the cake you had me strapped to a symbol and carried down to this ring to be sacrificed To the undertaker in a wedding you did it i was sacrificed at my father expenses symply so you could screw stone cold steve austin
I do not actually think HHH is literally why Test is dead, but I genuinely felt like them destroying Test's momentum abruptly and completely in this storyline, taking him from Intercontinental-champion-level pops to basically nothing, was the beginning of the end for him
D-Lo being a friend of the show, True Story: He was talking with some ladies and he was making them laugh and he was talking about Sammy Sosa and he was like: "Why do you think he does that gesture, it's all 'Kiss my @$$, kiss my @$$.'." lol And after the show he was on his way out I asked "Why do they call you D-Lo?" He said "I don't know, that's just what my mama named me." Good talk. 😁
This was my favorite era of HHH when he was the game peak heel top guy and had the bosses daughter on his arm. And two decades later they now they the place
Crazy to think Rumble 2000 was just after this, that HHH/Foley feud escalated QUICK. Plus the Hardy/Dudley feud too. Not to mention Kurts streak getting choked out.
I enjoyed this show as a kid but can’t remember ever watching it back again. Also I could’ve sworn Val won the IC title earlier in the year as his first singles belt
Kurt Angle has one of the greatest Moonsaults in my opinion. The clothesline by Kane was great. Personally, I think the Kane/X-Pac feud could have went better. I was so sad when their tag team broke up. I think it would have made more sense if they faced each other at Survivor Series, Kane goes over, maybe Kane could face The Big Show at this show for the title, but X-Pac costs him the match. They face each other at Royal Rumble in the No Holds Barred match that took place at No Way Out, but Tori betrays Kane. You have that Paul Bearer & Kane return, but it’s before WrestleMania 16 instead of No Way Out, & you either have that Steel Cage match we just saw or an Inferno match
@@silverback9572 Thank you. Also, had Billy Gunn not gotten injured before No Way Out 2000, I would've imagined the bookers shoehorning the New Age Outlaws into the ladder match with the Hardyz, the Dudleyz, and Edge & Christian. In fact, here's how the Outlaws would've been booked: As the Outlaws are being interviewed by Michael Cole, gloating that they will leave Anaheim with the titles once again, they're attacked by the Dudleyz and locked in a boiler room. Then, by the time the Outlaws do get out, the ladder match is already over, and Edge & Christian have won the gold, which could set up E&C vs. the Outlaws at Backlash. The reason why I'm saying this is because I kept thinking about how on Raw Roulette in October 2002, Hurricane Helms was beaten up backstage by Triple and Ric Flair, thus forcing Kane to defend the Raw Tag-Team Titles alone against Chris Jericho & Christian, Bubba Ray & Spike Dudley, and Jeff Hardy & Rob Van Dam in Tables, Ladders, & Chairs 4.
Thankfully WWF had Rocky at this time. I can't think of any other top babyfaces who could have gone up against Triple H other than Foley. Austin and Taker were both gone at this point and Foley only had two months left.
I agree. To me The Rock and Triple H rivalry will always be a top tier rivalry to me. It was perfect pairing to. Rock was this handsome but goofy good guy while Triple H was this manly evil bad guy. Plus the history of them before this point. They were perfect.
