Stephen King said something like this in relation to Harry Potter: "Harry Potter is a story about finding who you are, taking on challenges, and making friends who no matter what will be there to help guide you to happiness... Twilight is a book about how important it is to have a boyfriend."

@@guyfalks9801 no, and I even went looking for it. I think it's in one of his female hero's journey podcasts (where he's got the webcam set up). Something about confronting something that wants to devour you and facing it anyway. Taming the dragon at great risk to yourself instead of slaying the dragon and the like. My mom and I own neighbouring farms and people often just "re-home" feral cats by driving them out and abandoning them nearby. I ignore them, but my mom tries to tame them. All she does is get slowly closer and closer. She doesn't ask them to change or make any demands of them, but just her presence has a calming effect that allows the cats to gain the benefits of human civilization. It's not been risk free- and she has the scars to prove it. But her very presence has power to tame the wild. That's the archetypal female hero's journey being played out in Twilight.

@Joshua D while that's a fair criticism, you are still left with the reality that, for one reason or another, the series resonated deeply with readers. You can treat it with a dismissive "there is no accounting for taste" or you can recognize that it simply, without presumption, without complexity, without guile, was exactly what it was trying to be.

Listening to Jordan Peterson reminds me that knowledge is not a pile of facts to be remembered, but a vast web of interrelated truths. Every point in the topic reminds him of something related to that point that reinforces it.

There's a reason for that: every "truth" is an explanation of the experience, and behind it is a pattern. We need at least two occurrences of a phenomenon to figure out a pattern out of it (e.g. you see a picture of a cat, someone tells you it's "fat" but you can't figure out what makes it "fat" - having fur, being animal, having eyes... It could be anything. Only if you experienced something similar but when only one property overlap you can for sure say what "fat" means). And this is the reason we can jump from one topic, from one "cluster of truths" to the other, we can simply take pattern from one cluster, or should I say "flower" and jump to the other flower, picking up pollen and eventually making honey. And same as there's an enjoyment in eating honey, so is finding hidden connections between all those different knowledge and patterns they share. You're like a spider on a web, dancing and praying on an innocent, paralyzed child (trying to follow connections makes you stuck in your mind and paralyzed like a rabbit in front of the car light, or you now trying to visualize all I said to you, maybe even forgetting about that imminent spider). But don't worry, you can always find it ridiculous, put some skates on it's legs and laugh at it. Just like you're about to do it now. Just wait for it......

Thats exactly why we have concentrations in knowledge, jordan peterson doesnt know everything, he cant, and no philosopher can, its too much information to process, and anyone that trys is gonna have some sloppy amalgamation of tragedy. Thats why hes always on a tangent, hes not just recollecting what he knows, hes constsntly refining his thoughts while trying to teach ppl his thoughts. But it will never be enough for him. Hes struggling to teach philosophy. And as a fellow philosopher and admirer, he will never accomplish his goal in its entirety.

This made me realize as to how perfect it was that everytime Harry Potter and the crew helped the whole school from colapsying, they had to break some rules. This goes to show how sometimes you have to go outside the box to produce change. Even Hermione had to swallow that fact, after she almost got killed by a troll, and she would've died without Harry and Ron disobeying the rules.

Harry Potter's a rule breaker. But in other interviews he says Harry only breaks rules WHEN NECESSARY. So not really disobedient just capable of using his own discernment of the rules, to see if they apply to his situation. And what rules does he break. Yr1 he and Ron go looking for Hermione instead of heading back to Griff' tower, saves her life. Don't go to the 3rd floor, it's dangerous, u might Die! But they all go and manage to save the day. Don't go in the forbidden forest, it's dangerous, u might Die! And that's just yr 1! All the rules he breaks r ones put in place to keep the kids safe. Sooooooo.... U can't grow spiritually if always kept safe. Break away from the safe spaces, strike out on ur own track down ur demons, challenge them and keep challenging them until u prevail.

I wonder if this means you are the hero - your current life - AND you are the basilisk - the sum life of all who came before you, or the sum of your past lives if you believe that concept to be true. But you can’t literally see yourself, only your reflection - your mirror image - and your shadow. Perhaps the only time you may truly see yourself is in the moment of literal or ego death. Which then leads to transformation of some kind. I often find myself in thought about the concept of self reflection, introspection, and the amazing capacity of water - when still to reflect a paralysed image of you, and when flowing to reflect a constantly transforming, reshaping image of you. Mirrors by contrast to water can only show a fixed image - but as we know from a hall of mirrors at a circus for example - mirrors can be warped which shows that their reflections cannot be entirely trusted. Even more prevalent in this age of filters and photoshop.

A major part of the story for me was understanding the voldemort part in harry is the negative part that is in all of us. When it goes unchecked it will continue to torture your mind, filling you with anger, negativity, and isolation from your friends. It will continue to gain strength until you feel so bad that you can accept that you have to face it. Things have to get so bad that you no longer fear death. When you truly face it you are able to kill this part of you. Then re-emerging free from it. Like a dark night of the soul experience.

This a a very stupid and generic sentence from the moves that isn't in the books. Book version: "It is our choices that show what we are, far more than our abilities" - Albus Dumbledore talking about the sorting hat and explaining how it sorts + drawing a parallel to personal choices being someone's destiny. And here's a good Sirius Black quote (that isn't in the movies): "If you want to know what a man is like, take a look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals". The screenwriter really liked to shoe in "Light vs Darkness" into the dialogue as often as possible cuz it really says nothing and needs no context, but just sounds "nice and good" (and generic af).

This is complete speculation, but I think Jordan Peterson is trying to hint at the giants that were turned to stone (in the flood) and the occult / Satanist that rule every facet of government who came from this DNA lineage (nephilim), believe they are that transformation he's speaking about. Obviously he would never say that in a classroom because it would blow people's minds and sound ridiculous if you didn't have all the other puzzles pieces that complete this picture. I love how he flipped the transformation concept in the opposite way for the better (good vs evil), and be used in a positive way. It makes sense it would because it's the same concept for the two wildly different routes. It's transparent in that aspect.

This is because it is reflected in myths and truths of human psychology. The snake is a prey animal, and Harry’s encounter with it leaves him paralyzed, which is also true on a physical level for humans (we freeze up when we are scared) but also on a mental/emotional level. When we encounter a major problem (snake) we also have to pause and think about what went wrong. Then part of us dies and is born again with a renewed understanding, like how the phoenix is known for dying and being reborn. He touched on other archetypes as well.

It seems like a lot of destruction comes from people being unable to face their shadow, too many people want to split off from it and not acknowledge it, they want to believe they are "all good" and everyone else is "all bad." This concept is also a consistent theme in David Lynch's work, especially Twin Peaks. The dark half will consume everything if it isn't faced and integrated. That which is underneath the surface will make itself known if balance isn't maintained. I think that's a lot of what we are seeing with people now.

@Joshua D this is one of the reasons why your democracy doesn't work because there is no respect for the other side. You only look at extremes and base your political views on who you'd have a drink with at a bar. It's all a popularity contest and not about actual opinions or facts. Because of that missing respect it just doesn't work out because if you don't respect someone you're not willing to listen to their argument. Change your political beliefs as a country and stop villainising the other side as if it's a reincarnation of satan
@absol3441
@absol3441 4 года назад
@Joshua D I'm saying that both sides do the same thing. The Democrat party does pander to much to the extremes and leftist media but Republicans also pander to all of the right wing media and the extremes. You can see that by the fact that you both despise each other for acting both as immature. The difference is that the left falsly claim that all right people are mysogonist racists therefore disabling their ability to bring up a good argument and right wingers falsly claim that left wingers are all irrational morons who aren't willing to debate or are able to bring up good arguments. This is something you see time and time again and both sides are blaming the other whilst not reflecting on what they might be doing wrong. That's not how the world works and especially not politics. I'm btw not a centrist (clarifying this so it doesnt get used to invalidate my argument)
@absol3441
@absol3441 4 года назад
@Joshua D it's not based on both sides being equal but both sides should be seen as equals even though there are differences. Arguments from both sides should be valued equally and I'm talking about arguments from the sides not from all individuals because some are very irrational. It's also not like right wingers don't have "irrational views" the fact that some right wingers keep clinging to the right to bear arms even though there is a definite problem with gun violence in your country. I'm not saying that they should be banned because I think there is a midway but a lot of the times if there is a debate about changing the gun regulations (not perse banning them) right wing people keep screening "but the constitution" like it's your Bible. My point is just because there are irrational extremes on both side shouldn't mean that a whole group should be neglected. There are also a lot of racists who are right wing, there are basically no left wing racists but that shouldn't be a reason to call all right wing people racist. Both sides should view the other with respect cause that's where healthy debate can take place. I also don't like social media pandering from the left because that also shuts down debate which is bad imo. I'm more left leaning I would say but I'm still able to reflect on both sides just like I agree with some arguments from both sides. That's key imo
@absol3441
@absol3441 4 года назад
@Joshua D you are also making huge leaps here I'm not saying that defending the institution is irrational but blindly defending it without listening to someone's arguments is irrational. Another huge leap your making is saying that all leftists want a Marxist communist utopia. That's simply not true. Bringing up that basic health care or benifits for the poor (which there could be strict rules for) isn't equal to creating a communist Utopia. You keep talking in extremes while my whole point is that there are outliers but they shouldn't discredit the left or the right. Just like for example the BLM shouldn't be discredited by some rioters that are a lot of times white people from different cities that like to wreck stuff or arcinists. Another example is the anti-abortion movement which is labelled as Christians who think there are no circumstances under which abortion may be allowed which is also not true. American politics is discrediting someone by their outliers which you can see in the fact that Trump keeps talking about how retarded the left is and the fact that every leftist thinks that Trump is the devil himself. I'm just saying that you guys need to look at campaign points with respect and value even if you don't agree with them otherwise democracy doenst work.

When comparing his lectures to the ones I attended when I was at university, I can't help but realize the vaaaaast difference between Peterson's way of teaching and what I experienced there. Even if I was interested in the topic (and I obviously was able to choose my subjects) and even if the professors were competent and knowledgeable, there was not anyone who did not read from a script. Normally, you couldn't help but doze off after some amount of time. But in these lectures, the students seem attentive. I don't know why some comments say they seem bored...? Now I can see smt interesting from the perspective of my own experience. I would like to make such metaphor to show it better : a person needs two things - the roots and the wings. To exists properly in society. The roots are our culture, our ancestors, our family. The wings are our chances of education, of development, of making something for bigger progress. But when a person went through the process of cutting the wings the only thing this person has left with are the roots. Thats is how - I guess - many educated and critical and creative persons returned to their roots - becouse that was the only thing the society left them with by cutting their wings, their ambitions. And I guess that many people want to be more conservative and returning to their roots - of family, of religion, of culture - becouse they were punished for their virtues of creativeness, ambition, hard work and want of developing smt for the good of society. We were left by the society, by the govs, by the elites without the chance to enter the processes of developoment and to gain some participation in the process (on any topic), and so the only thing I - and many others - were left with was their roots, toward which we are returning now, becouse no one wanted us to join the progress by cutting our wings.

@themsuicjunkies
@themsuicjunkies 3 года назад
@@Frank7489 Postmodernism is just a way of saying everything that comes after the Enlightment. Because Marxism is basically modernism, what he wrote, how he thought about the world was a direct influence of thinkers like Adan Smith, Locke, Montesquieu, etc. Postmodernism is a critique or revision of this concepts, they are not all a bunch of hidden closet marxist, they are influence by him? Sure. Like they are influenced by Montesquieu and Einstein Theory of Relativity. We live in a mostly libertarian, capitalist world but he acts as if they teach Habbermas, Derrida, Gramsci and Foucalt to every american student. I would imagine that 99% of those students dont know who the heck these people are but somehow their thoughts, feelings and worldview are all infected by their marxist propaganda. He also uses Foucalt and Gramsci as interchangeble when they sre many authors who have direct contradictory points of view like Adorno or Bequer. The world we live today is basically libertarian and focus on individuals over the collective but you are telling me that what informs PC cultural wars is marxism? Thats just weird. How you dont know that the concept of uniqueness and freedom is not what is driven this movement?

In Croatian Odaja tajni is the chamber of secrets, and at the same time it is very close in sound to 'betrayal of secrets'. 'Odavanje tajni' really means 'Betrayal of secrets', but 'izdaja' means betrayal (of somebody or something, which may be by betraying of his secret, and as you can see the last four letters are the same. Not a coincidence. Somehow I was naturally patriotic in those days when the seed of idea has grown, but in our present time I have also recognized that message and meaning when the second book was published, but did not recognize personal connection between Joanne and me immediately. We where connected spiritually during her writing. And however even J Peterson has said . and there are how many of them (books) seven!... In the beginning I was more negative in observing her personally. I can not find the word for that. A few words partly apply, but none quite. I was aware that we must booth have been creasy about the literature from very young age. It was impossible to have a similar meaning for her from the very beginning, because of the task of writing seven books, have I started with very positive feelings about her it would be like Hufflepuff. A balloon that would make poof. And also she was active subject while my part was not well defined or clear, even now it isn't. That chamber is less secretive then the rest of the castle, without a doubt. Which plays into my explanation. One interesting thing is that people suspect Harry to be a bad guy exactly in this sequel were a creature of lover position in evolution has central role. Peterson didn't talk exactly about that, but his explanations apply to that moment in the story also. It makes him also potentially closer to Malfoy, and in one hidden chamber of other kind he saves life of his enemies Malfoy and Goyle. 11:47 beta mail guy. One of the roles of our culture is to make some of naturally alfa mail to appear to be beta mail. If they would appear like alfa it would be much differently then the majority of alfas, so alfa-ness of majority of alfas could some under scrutiny. When I say culture I mean people.
