The Meaning of Apostles vs. Disciples

The gospels refer to the followers of Jesus Christ sometimes as disciples and sometimes as apostles. What is the difference between these two terms?
The term disciple means “student.” Disciple is the term used to refer to any of the followers of Jesus Christ in the gospels.
The word apostle means "one who is sent." The apostles were twelve specific men chosen by Jesus among the many disciples.
Here are the names of the original twelve apostles according to Mark:
"So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him."
Mark 3:16-19
Why twelve? There were twelve tribes of Israel. Jesus Christ selected twelve men as a symbolic way of appointing twelve new leaders of God's people, the Church.
The role of the Apostle was passed on through the laying on of the hands and the sacrament of Holy Orders. The bishops are the modern-day successors to the twelve apostles. These bishops also appointed priests and deacons to lead and serve God's people.
According to Matthew 28, Jesus sent forth his apostles to make disciples and baptize and teach his commandments. He sent them forth to the end of the earth.
Side note (not in the video): Was St. Paul an apostle or disciple?
St. Paul rightfully claimed to be one of the apostles. While he wasn't one of the twelve apostles that followed Jesus during his lifetime, St. Paul was a leader of the Church and oversaw the foundation of Christian communities in many cities throughout the Mediterranean. Jesus Christ also appeared to him directly and sent him forth on a special mission to the Gentiles.

From my understanding, when Paul became an apostle, that made 13, because Judas had already been replaced. Is that correct?

You forgot to mention apostle Paul - the principal apostle of the gentile as describe aside from the twelve tribes of israel. The 12th apostle or disciple of Jesus in replacement of Judas is Matias. Godbless

2 years too late, but none the less. I think your explination is flawed. In your video you explained that Diciples means student and that Apostle means Leader of the Church and “Sent” (Those who are sent). Jesus appointed the 12 Diciples (students) to follow Him and thus to Learn from Him. After Jesus rose up to Heaven, His Diciples became the Apostles (Leaders of the Church / those who spread His word / Those He sent to spread the Gospel).

Yes, and what most of them don't know is that Mathias was chosen by the Holy Spirit to be the 12th and final apostle that there were not 13 apostles, Paul could have been a disciple, but he was not one of the 12 apostles. Shalom.

Under your thinking Romans 1:1, 1 Corinthians 1:1, 2 Corinthians 1:1, Galatians 1:1, Ephesians 1:1 where Paul is called an Apostle would be wrong. The bible is very clear that there is more than 12 Apostles.

Your explanation at the end defeats the logic you initially stated. If there are 12 apostles that represent the tribes of Israel how come there are more that had their hands laid on them.

An apostle is waaaaay more than you declare. They MUST be ‘must-ed’ that is a term for making perfect wine. You haven’t been through the process. I can tell immediately by your unjoyless voice. Read deeply all of Apostle Paul’s letters. Ephesians & Galatians in particular. 🌹

Lead by the doctrine of the apostles, in that the apostles aren't continually the overarching leaders of the church & 5-fold ministry but through Christ laid the foundation with the prophets.

Paul refers to himself in his writings as an Apostle of Christ. If Paul is not the 13th Apostle then the bible would be wrong, which it s not.

uhm actually, most other religions believe in jesus and what he and his followers did, they just don’t necessarily believe in it and/or don’t see him as God’s son
