The MEDITATIONS of MARCUS AURELIUS: A Book That Will Change Your Life
During the peak of Rome's glory lived a stoic emperor who left a journal that became a blueprint on how to live a virtuous and good life. The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is an important pillar of classical education and classical literature. The "Philosopher King" would become synonymous with Marcus Aurelius as he would become one of the most famous Roman emperors in history. I hope you enjoy my ramblings on this amazing journal "Meditations" as we dive into Marcus Antoninus's thoughts.

I'm a paramedic and I find stoicism and Marcus Aurelius in particular relevant to a lot of things I have encountered over the years in my career

It’s definitely relevant. I imagine in a position like being a paramedic it comes in handy for sure. Thanks so much for watching and have a blessed weekend!

Been awhile since I have been up that way. Went to Beaver Dam for a concert one time and drank (just a few) beers in Milwaukee. I think a flying book club (minus the Milwaukee beer) would be a fantastic idea! Haha Likewise hit me up if you are ever down this way. Stay grinding brother!

You said Marcus Aurelius continually writes that death is a thing indifferent because he fears death. I agree with you. When I read his 1,000th variation of "death is a thing indifferent", I thought about the famous line from Hamlet, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Marcus Aurelius's fear of death surprises me because he faces death continuously during his life. Typically, we overcome a fear through repeated exposure to it. Not so with Marcus Aurelius and his fear of death. Perhaps Marcus Aurelius has an extraordinarily strong fear of death that cannot be overcome through exposure to it. Alternatively, perhaps the fear of death can never be overcome. I doubt that this latter alternative is true because many men have sacrificed their lives. These men have overcome the fear of death at least for a moment, but there's the rub. The duration of the sacrifice is often short. As Dostoyevsky writes, "Men will give their lives if only the ordeal does not last long but is soon over, with all looking on and applauding as though on stage." Perhaps the fear of death is overcome only in short bursts of energy, and the fear immediately returns after the energy is spent. You close the video by saying that nothing matters except living a just life. I like that sentiment. However, I know many men who would disagree. Those men love life so much that they are willing to do anything to keep it, which reminds me of another quote from Dostoyevsky: "Where was it that I read about a man condemned to death saying or thinking, an hour before his death, that if he had to live somewhere high up on a cliffside, on a ledge so narrow that there was room only for his two feet - and with the abyss, the ocean, eternal darkness, eternal solitude, eternal storm all around him - and had to stay like that, on a square foot of space, an entire lifetime, a thousand years, an eternity - it would be better to live so than die right now! Only to live, to live, to live! To live, no matter how - only to live! ...How true! Lord, how true! Man is a scoundrel! And he's a scoundrel who calls him a scoundrel for that." Would I behave like those condemned men if I faced the same circumstances? I like your answer to this question - 'No'. See you in the next video.

My man!! Glad to see you again! I completely agree with the fear of death idea you state above. In your warm bed laying in peace it is easy to fear death. In fact, no one really wants to die. But something happens emotionally during a combat situation, a natural disaster or when your kids/wife are in danger and the subject then becomes willing to die to improve the situation. Adrenaline it seems blocks the clear thinking receptacles that makes us reason for life or death. Very deep concept to dive down into. I often think about the crazy charges like the 600 in Crimea or Pickett's charge where when the horn was blown you knew it was basically suicide to continue on.. but so many people do. As for you second point I like that quote from Dostoyevsky and have never heard it. It kind of reminds me of the Poem "Rage"... I also think that is more of the Epicurean concept of philosophy which I have not ventured to deep down. (A book is sitting on my bookshelf full of the knowledge - but the time is not sitting beside it! haha) I have felt that I play the devils advocate with some of these authors. I feel I have to take their side and see it from their point of view and almost present the subject matter in that way. I think faith is more important than even living a just life (even though they are close to the same thing) and I can see where people may diverge from Marcus's purpose of a good life. Again, I truly appreciate you watching and thanks so much the though provoking comments. Makes me look up things and dive down other authors. Stay blessed and hit me up dude! I would love to chat.

I've been a paramedic for over 20 years and I've seen a lot of death. I've seen horrific deaths and sad deaths, I've even seen funny deaths and beautiful deaths. So it's not death itself that should be feared but the manner of death that you should be concerned about because while I myself don't fear fear death itself there are ways of dying that scare the shit out of me
@nickkrupa3818
@nickkrupa3818 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment. You highlight the difference between dying and being dead. Some people fear dying in a painful and humiliating manner. Some people fear death itself because they believe the pain and humiliation might continue when they are dead. Whether people _should_ fear certain ways of dying and whether people _should_ fear death itself are interesting questions. You answer that people should fear dying in certain ways, but they should not fear being dead. I am interested in learning why you believe that. Could you please elaborate on your previous comment?@@stretmediq

Yes indeed. I may be off concerning that observation but that is what it felt like to me. I think Marcus struggles more than we think now days. Who wouldn’t with that power and temptation? Thanks so much for watching buddy! Stay blessed.

I’ve read Meditations three times and never once had I thought that the common themes could be representative of the times when, actually, he needed to remind him that he didn’t behave in a way that he should. You’re completely right. My journal doesn’t talk about the times I extolled Stoic virtues. It only includes the parts when I struggled to live up to my expectations of myself! A very grounding and humbling thought. Also reminds us that Stoicism is a practice, and a discipline, and something we should continue to strive for
@The_Cause

Yes indeed! It didn’t hit me until I reflected on my own journal. I rarely mention the things I am doing great but I always include where I am falling short. I could be wrong but i do believe MA struggled with most of what he wrote about. In terms of temptations he had it much harder than me as well. I can only imagine the demons a political ruler who is trying to live just must feel. Truly appreciate you watching my friend and hope you enjoy the rest!

It's such a shame to see a man, over the course of these videos, cling so desperately to the very thing responsible for the destruction of the very things he claims to be desperate to maintain or regain.
@The_Cause

I’m going to need some clarification on this one. Curious to know what is being clung on to? What is being destroyed and what is he trying to regain? Just a smidge of ambiguity here and it may be my lack of intelligence to fully pick up what you are laying down. I truly appreciate you watching though and stay blessed!

@@The_Cause The ideology of individualism, equality, and the myth of "America" will forever erode the values you're concerned we are or have already lost. They're both founded on fundamentally flawed and incorrect assumptions about the world. Nothing anyone says on the internet will ever change anyone's mind, but I will direct you to G.K. Chesterton and Thomas Carlyle as starting points.

Well I am definitely looking forward to reading more into that. I know Thomas Carlyle is included in the Harvard Classics but not sure about Chesterton although he may be as well.
