The LOST "Christian Civilization" of Bensalem By Francis Bacon - Harvard Classics - HC3 Ep12

They were lost at sea and almost gave up hope until they stumbled upon the land of Bensalem. A Christian utopia comprised of some of the most virtuous and pious inhabitants. They valued knowledge over gold and wisdom over commodities. In the story of The New Atlantis, Francis Bacon lets his pen flow with imaginative details that would not become reality until centuries later. I truly hope you enjoy this episode of "The New Atlantis" by Bacon.

Glad I found this channel! I found a great deal on a super old set of the Harvard Classics and I've been reading through them (somewhat sluggishly, but making progress). I'm now reading volume 6. Hoping to follow along.

Sounds like Bacon forgot to pencil in the amazing coffee there in Bensalem when he was crafting this Utopia. Let’s face it, no true utopia can exist without some bomb coffee! It was almost perfect… almost.

Do you know if Sir Thomas Moore wrote Utopia before of after this? The intro to the video, where you suspect that Bacon was creating an image of the sort of society he would want to live in reminds me of one of my favorite Thoreau quotes from Civil Disobedience "Let every man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and that will be one step toward obtaining it."
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 4 месяца назад
Moore's Utopia was a few decades before Bacon wrote this one. That is a good point to bring up. I have heard Moore's kind of set the foundation for this style of writing even though Plato's Republic kind of touched on it. Thanks for watching!

I would return home. Although a society like Bensalem that cherishes faith, family, and practical wisdom is desirable and is perhaps better than my society, I agree with Odysseus when he says: "Yet every day, while absent thus I roam, I languish to return and die at home."

I'm not entirely sure why the almighty algorithm brought me to our channel, but I'm it did. After watching the entire series this week, I'm definitely on the lookout for every future video. I've also added a few of these to my exhaustive "need-to-read" list. Concerning Bacon's work, I definitely agree on your hope for a return to the family as the foundational unit of a society. This age of self that we seem to be in has led to many unfortunate consequences that I think could at least be mitigated with a return to faith and family as the pillars on which a civilization stands. Anyway, I appreciate you doing this. I love learning and discussing learning, so I'm here for all the ones to come. Might even find a friend to start our own little education-cast.

Just listened to all your videos and I’m inspired to read even more. When I found this channel I had just finished reading through the entire bible which took me a little over a year. I have read through the Bible about three times so far. Recently I wanted to learn more about the early church fathers. I want to know how they lived out Christian faith so early after Jesus death and I have heard that some of them were quite wise and learned. It would help me get a new perspective on things.

No wonder that Eliot stated at the opening their was no particular order to the various works that make up the Harvard Classics. If left to my own devices, I fear I would procrastinate too long over which I must attend to reading first, whereas they all build on each other. I thought you made that point well, as it seems clear that this is a series that should be revisited with not only one reading of the series but perhaps revisited at intervals of a year in Ones life, perhaps taking a year every decade or so to enable the richness of the collection to be heard at various points when different tunes will resonate with growth and compounding impacts will be safely rewarded for such an investment of time. It would likely be time lost watching commercials on an idiot box for so very many including my younger self, which is much to be lamented as a fools leisure all these decades later.
@The_Cause
@The_Cause 4 месяца назад
Very good point. While reading a book written by Mortimer Adler he said a true understanding of knowledge can’t even be really understood until after the age of 50. The experiences in life integrate into the works being read and the takeaways are elevated to a new level of understanding. The older I get the more I believe that is true. We like to fight that concept in our younger years due to ego and what not. Like always I truly appreciate you watching and love hearing your feedback!

Another great video Rob, thanks. I found it quite interesting what you said about Bacon’s writing with all the technology and science…some of which came to fruition. I attributed much of that to Jules Verne and here Bacon was doing similar feats (a writer before his time) and about 200 years earlier. Too bad he wasn’t able to complete it. Not sure if this book is recognized in the Harvard Five-Foot shelf but you may be interested in Thomas More’s Utopia. Thanks again, hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas!

coffee time! the new shots near the beginning were cool but I think the takeaways and meaning part moved a bit too much lots of guys on that island if european ships kept showing up is there really that much focus on the family unit in the book? that word is crazy haha I thought the story would go more like the land of the lotus eaters or calypso or many of the earlier stories but I guess they were pagan lol and of course unrelated but I'm curious did the keyword from a week or two ago end up working?

to be fair I get motion sickness quite easily haha - so the movement might be totally fine I'm excited for when you get the "this channel is underrated" comments! I'm curious to see if part of the success of the first video was because of the top view you showed in the thumbnail and then again at the beginning of this video or if it was just a solid title, thumbnail, and information - probably everything lol I'm still amazed you changed one of the titles - so if you made a video my mind would be officially blown I'm mostly just getting prepped for a bunch of family stuff that popped up but I think I'll be making an insane number of videos when that ends I'm not confident about the quality of all of them but they are improving - I think I have 52 for 2024 and 3 for 2025 so I guess 55 also - it's really cool to see your replies on most if not all of the comments you get - especially because they don't seem to be negative even when that would be reasonable@@The_Cause
