Getting kind of a.....snakeish, sort of Mediterranean vibe here, ya know? Like literally, try saying "Baby birch trees" in a spooky story and make it sound good. I dare you. I just think the words "baby birch trees" should never be in a Ligotti story, but what do I know. Stunted, maybe?
I really enjoyed this one, and I had actually never read it before until recently. Definitely lots of clues to pick up throughout the story, and worth a second read afterwords.
