Award winning filmmaker Marc Isaacs explores the secret life of Britain's truckers, discovering an uncharted world of isolation, loneliness and the open road. Finding many of these men sleeping in their own trucks in lay-by car parks and service stations, this film is an intimate and poignant portrayal of modern masculinity on Britain's motorways.

Awful. The filmmaker probably had this great idea of interviewing men who drive trucks and thought he'd find some heartbreaking brilliant stories of how difficult it is and tough it is and uncover this 'uncharted world of isolation' ... but in reality they seem pretty content and he obviously spent absolutely no time whatsoever getting to know his characters because the relationship between the filmmaker and interviewee's is non-existent and SO so so awkward. He sounds like a creepy trainee counselor trying to pull some sorrow out of them. Give us some worthwhile content please BBC... this was a shambles.

I spent almost 40 years as a truck driver, almost all of them doing distance work, 26 as in international driver. What this stupid interviewer does not seem to comprehend, long haul truck driving is not a job, it is a way of life. It cost me 3 marriages, but I don't regret any of it. I slept better in my truck that I ever did in a house. For almost 13 years I was an owner driver and spent most of my life just going from one job to another, I loved it. I'm now retired and I miss the life sooooooooo much.

Thank you for your comments Fred. I was hoping i could ask some questions; 1. What was the appeal of being on the road? 2. Did you not miss your family/friends? 3. Why did you hate being home so much? 4. Did you ever feel lonely on the Road?
@fredgrove4220
@fredgrove4220 7 лет назад
T Man:- I don't mind answering questions, so here goes. #1 No bosses looking over my shoulder. As long as I got my job done, there was no one telling me how to do it. Also, I woke up to a different view out of my window every day. #2 I have never been much of a family man. My first wife did a good job of turning my 2 kids against me, with the help of her mother. Most of my friends were also truck drivers and I did run into them now and then on the road. #3 No real point in being at home. My house was just an address for people to write to. Besides as I said, I just did not sleep well in a bloody great big bedroom, like getting agraphobia , lol. #4 No, never did feel lonely, I've always been quite comfortable with my own company. As I said I often ran into other drivers I knew, French, German , Spanish, Dutch etc., being a professional driver for many years, I've picked up a smattering of a lot of languages and most other drivers are the same, so with my being able to speak a little of their language and they speaking mine, we managed quite well. I hope that helps a little, if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
@ipman3564
@ipman3564 7 лет назад
Thanks Fred, I'm not sure i can do it. Its a good job, demand looks constant (once you get your experience) but the lack of social interaction i think might get to me. You've been at this a long time, so, can you tell us; 1. "Who makes it in Trucking and who doesn't?" Thanks man...i really appreciate your input. ~T
@fredgrove4220
@fredgrove4220 7 лет назад
Put it this way, if you go into long haul truck driving as a job, you have already failed. If you want to drive for a living and do as my cousin does, only have one maybe two nights out a week, then yes, you can treat it as a job. If you want to do as I did, then it isn't a job, it is a way of life. You are born to do it. if you have any doubts, then save yourself a lot of agro and heart ache, stay away from the life. Anyway, what ever you decide to do, the best of luck.

This video is a disgrace to our industry and I'm ashamed that the BBC have added their name to this tripe! No offence or insensitivity to the truckers involved but this doesn't depict trucking or truckers in a good light and by far makes us all appear dull, depressed and sad. Even the editing, music and shit questions depict this too. I’ve been driving since 76 at times all over North America, it’s a vast country based out of Canada. At night I summarize my days work, think about tomorrow and go to sleep. I get the job done, and look forward to spending time at home with my wife and kids content with the feeling I’ve done my best to provide for them.

I think I would be depressed sleeping in those shoe box European sleepers. They need a big sleeper cab like we have in Australia or America.

I slept 15 years in such shoe box. They've improved a lot. People couldn't stand up in the past. In Europe, there are size regulations about the total length of trucks, so a bigger cabin would limit your payload. And many companies don't have space for bigger trucks.

no how can they be to small when 25 meter B trains are suddenly allowed in Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany? That means there was always room, the rules are set arbitrary. You cant make delivery everywhere even with a short truck and trailer so it isn't really an argument.

Completely untrue film. I’m a truck driver I never feel lonely. I’m always in moving from one place to another, I meet and chat with different people, at the parking place we cook, drink, talk and laugh before sleeping, it’s always fun. And make enough money to keep my family happy, we can go to the holidays we want. It’s a professional job, don’t look just at some unorganised drivers.

This film looks to be making drivers out to be lonely, boring people. Im 25 and been linehauling for alittle under 5 years staying in my truck minimim 2 nights a week and i love. My own space an time,no one around to bug me. Just me myself an I. Wouldnt change it for the world. I still live a normal life. Come home, do home duties,got a gf for the last 10 years, go out in the weekends etc etc. Everybody has there own story. Not everyone gets lonely an bored!

Depressing dirge of a film. Barely a single mention of any positives, just a few truckies being cajoled into saying how shit their lives are. No mention of any of the other causes of trucker shortages either, if you only had this to go on, its just because they're lonely and have family issues.

My grandad was a heavy goods and long distance driver for 30 years. He's been married to my grandma for 53 years and they've had no disagreement about my grandads career. He loved every second of it, even wishes he could back to it at the ripe age of 75. It's a career for gods sake, and a good one that at. A lot of money to be made in such a job. The interviewer was basically trying to back these lads into a corner and make them say 'I'm so lonely on the road I hate my life and job.' Poor interview skills, just a terrible attempt at tugging heartstrings

Hahaha... Worst example of a journalist trying to make misery where it's not to be found... Those guys are like most truckers - we love what we do and we love every aspect of it. Yeah, we have shitty days - I mean, most of us has tried to get stuck during the winter or discovering that the farm we are delivering to had less space than expected. But then again, when you park your truck after a day of honest, hard work, turn on the parking heater, get a bit to eat and a shower - life on the road isn't that bad afterall... Even though your'e far away from home - because sleeping in the truck is another thing we love... I have been driving for 17 years now, both locally and long haul and I will keep on as long as it's possible.

I saw a program about an ex driver who now goes around to visit drivers parked up for a chat and to help with any problems, he said he spent hours crying, feeling lonely, it must be tough for some of them , time away from family, so good luck and respect to all our drivers. 👍

Interviewer: Why though? Trucker: Sense of freedom, I suppose. Interviewer: Do you not get lonely though? Trucker: No. Interviewer: Just say that you're lonely so we can play the sad music, ffs.
