The migration of a mennonite colony to Colombia's eastern plains is a little-known story worthy of greater coverage due to the environmental and social impacts this has had on the region and the traditional communities found here. And yet, hardly anyone has heard about it.
On this episode of the Colombia Calling podcast (available wherever you get your podcasts), Oscar Parra from Rutas del Conflicto - a website dedicated to bringing you stories about the Colombian conflict not covered in the mainstream press - and journalist Natalia Malaver join me to discuss this topic.
Hear about the history of the mennonites in Colombia, what they are producing and why the Colombian authorities look the other way as deforestation takes place in the name of progress.

Its so fascinating to see the cultural differences and how land is used between the people that has been on those lands for centuries (if not millenia) and the new migrants. I do not think it is a good idea to discourage these types of settlements, locals can learn and compete …

I understand your perspective and respect it, however the criticism towards this project is that forcing the agricultural frontiers into incredibly fragile ecosystems, something that is occurring tragically in Colombia through extensive deforestation and cattle farming is very damaging in the long run. The other issue is that agrarian reform and the right to the land is arguably the underlying issue for the long-running conflict in Colombia (sure cocaine and so on come later), but, to push the traditional communities from their land, is never going to go well. Even last week, there were confrontations in the region between the local indigenous people and their disagreement with this agricultural exploitation on their traditional land.

And, regarding the error on the size, yes this has been corrected and an apology mentioned in the latest episode.

@@ColombiaCalling I totally understand, land reform is needed and justice needs to be made if land was acquired irregularly.
