When hand lining and a fish is in the hook, don't neatly coil the line, pull it in hand over hand as quickly as you can. As soon as the fish is close yank the line hard & either net a big one or flip the sucker into the boat if small enough (like the one you hooked). Blue skies & following winds, mates.
@@StevenDiPietroBeerPartyyou’d need to be real skilled to gaff something that small while underway. And yeah, I don’t get why so many sailing channels don’t carry a fishing rod or 2 at minimum.
Right? Was thinking the same thing. And Joshua's vibe is perfect - so chill and amenable - it must have been such a relief to have that added support (physically and emotionally!)
I just wanted to pay you a compliment that you are amazing storytellers… Your terrific at video editing, filming, narration, choice of songs are really impressive. I’ve been following you for years and I’m grateful for your channel and what you do.
Jason was a pro photographer. he brought his production high quality game into yt. it is a quality production, they have no life. yt is a full time gig especially on a once a week schedule.
Damn. Nikki's talk about "routine" and what's "normal" really hit home. After 32 years of service, I retire THIS week and trying to get away from the routine and find a new normal, or having the ability to walk away from "normal", has finally come for me. Thanks Nikki, for the pep talk - I needed that.
I retired 8 years ago, and it was ROUGH. After being in the Service business for almost 20 years, When I sold, the phone stopped ringing, nobody needed my service. Be careful, you can't play golf or go fishing everyday, YOU have to find something to do..I started being a maintenance man at a large restaurant, for free, work an hour here and there, they just feed me and the family whenever I walk in... Good luck
I’m retiring in 11 month from military service and I’m starting to realize it’s not easy as I thought it was going to be. I need to make sure I keep my self busy for sure.
It's such a huge mental shift. I felt lost. When you describe a person, these days, they say "(age)-yr-old (name), a (occupation) from (hometown), ... Well, the age you can't control, the name is what you got given, and the hometown is where you're at. The (occupation) is the only area where you can make a difference - and that is about to cease, disappear, evaporate. That's your identity. It's something you need to watch closely, and MANAGE. If you don't control it, it will bury you.
I think it is safe to say that you guys are the best dressed sailors on RU-vid. LOL! Jason, your hair is starting to look very groovy. Be brave, grow it out, get bohemian, let it get a little wild, be a pirate; the girls will love it. Big smile.
17:30, not a coast guard boat, not a delivery boat, it is an interisland ferry boat ferrying passengers between Sibulan (Negros) and Liloan (Cebu), happy you are here guys.
I am so sad at so many toxic trolling comments that you get. We love you and appreciate all the enjoyment you have given us over the years. You were an enormous comfort through Covid and continue to be a must watch for us.
You need those hard times to remind you that life is real and to keep you prepared for the next hard time, but most of all it makes you appreciate the good times even more. You got to admit cruising in those glassy smooth waters is quite amazing even though it's not sailing you are still on the water.
I love that you show everything that you can. Not just the fun stuff but the fact that sailing can be exhausting. Having to take different watches on passage and always worried about leaving the boat when on anchor. Probably the only time you feel really secure is on a good mooring ball with no other boats in close proximity or in a marina. Two things you seldom do. I think you two are great examples of how keeping a positive attitude will pull you through most anything. You both looked so tired trying to find an anchorage. No matter what goes on you stay positive Nikki. Jason always manages a smile even dead tired and still knowing he’s got at least four hours of editing to do before getting any sleep. Hope the new boat issues all get sorted out. Cheers from Florida 🌴🌴🌴☀️
My granna would say "with out bad days there'd be no great days! All days would run boringly together"! And Niki a good cry when tired releases so much stress but also release coping endorphins to deal with exhaustion.. please take care you! I am enjoying watching you 3 interact so gracefully!
You had to know what one felt like to fully experience and appreciate the other. Good/bad, love/hate, joy/sorrow, peace/war. Like Nikki said, wear it like a badge of honor. Btw Jason saying suck it to yesterday had me cracking up. 24 minutes just flies by. Lots of videos I wish were shorter but I always wish yours were longer. Safe travels Wynn’s
Wow. Thanks for sharing the challenging stuff. A channel that is nothing but sunshine is not real. You do have the right attitude. Take the good with the bad and appreciate it all. Without the struggle it would be hard to be as grateful for the prize. Not for the faint of heart. I reflect on how easy I have it in my home with a pool. But I don't see the sights you see or experience the joy of a good day of sailing.
After watching hundreds of fish get away right at the back of the boat, this arm chair sailor believes that as the angle of the fishing line increases the likelihood of the fish coming off of the hook increases. As a result I propose a special tube shaped net that quickly attaches to the fishing line that also trails it's own separate rope. When the fish is 50ft to 100ft from the back of the boat then the net is sent down the fishing line where it's guided over the fish by the fishing line. The fish has no way of avoiding it. Then the separate rope is pulled and that closes the back of the net while also turning the fish backward in the current. You use the sturdy rope/net to bring the fish the rest of the way in. And congratulations, you stop losing fish at the back of the boat.
I love your videos, Nikki and Jason. You guys keep it real on the high seas. I pray you get more time to enjoy a fully functioning craft at some point soon. Hopefully, you get back to where you can get it fixed as well. Take care, and I'll keep watching for your videos. ❤ ❤❤❤
Another great story from the Wynns! I love how you make it about the tale, and not manufactured drama like certain other channels… and Nikki, a big thanks from my baking other half on your silicone galley item bit a few weeks back. Her silicone muffin trays have arrived and she is loving using them aboard👍
They put in long hours and get paid for it - most people consider that a job. Nikki and Jason typically work 40-60 hours/week to bring you this content that you can watch for free. Filming, editing, planning the next shoot, filming crew-only exclusive content, keeping the websites updated and running smoothly, etc. etc. And on top of that all, keeping up with boat maintenance and issues is pretty much another full-time job. Curious Minion
Out of curiosity (ha!), why don't you use a landing net? I grew up fishing on the great lakes, and we never dreamed of lifting a fish out of the water by the hook, of course we'd lose it! Shouting "I got one!" triggered a scramble to locate the net, get its own safety strap around one's wrist, and go help whoever was bringin' one in.
My therapist says obstacles and challenges build confidence for future ones and that we must run toward the obstacles instead of run away. You all are thriving and it's so nice to watch your professionally made content!
Life is like riding waves, with ups and downs. You meet each and wind up with "Steady as She Goes", which is my favorite expression for dealing with the waves. I really liked this video as you have shown it's not all sunny skies and fair winds. It takes determination and solid effort to reach those goals. As the Stones have said, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get what you need."
This too will pass.. doesn’t help while you’re enduring it. Much love to you both, boating was hit hard this week 😢 Just glad you’re both safe if not frustrated 🤗 Huggs
Nice being with Gone With The Wind, always insightful videos. It is amazing how much goes into selecting a proper anchorage and then getting hooked in properly. Thanks for sharing, c u next week, I hope.
❤ God bless locals willing to be Warning Wynn's off of🎉. Point man fishing. Bonus for bringing your vessel into HH freshly washed. Blessings cleanliness.
Interesting observation: There is another sailing channel that i unsubscribed to a month or two ago, because I found their way to report their problems too doom and gloom. Now, this episode of yours is also slightly doomy and gloomy. And yet, hearing it from you, watching you struggle is much easier to get. And just as I write this, wondering why that is, I realize: Even when you are in dire straits and high emotions, you are able to not take yourselves too seriously. You keep your head clear. Much closer to how I like to deal with difficulties. Thanks for this! And it is good to know you're through this by now!
Love waking up on Sundays and your videos are a part of our mornings. With this video I am going to put something out there... the elephant in the room.... I REALLY hope HH appreciates all you had to go through to get to their new factory. When they chose the location for their new factory did they think through what Every catamaran is going to have to sail through to get to that location??? The ease of accessibility for their boats should be high on the list for any company. The fact you had to sail close to known areas for piracy, sail against the tide AND the current, AND all the fishing nets. Just say'n HH..... 🧐 Maybe this was also a good learning curve of what to take into consideration when your planning where to go. Doing research with what info. is out there to know what to expect. (if the info. exist) And in the end it is all part of the experience. Fair winds and following seas Wynns! Awesome job. 🐬🏝💙
It's obvious to anyone that HH should have their factory on a huge barge, or maybe a surplus aircraft carrier, and come to wherever one of their boats needs service. Certainly they owe that to their customers, who should not be inconvenienced by having to sail their boats "against the tide AND the current", and don't forget avoiding "all the fishing nets". It is outrageous that paying customers would be abused like this.
Nothing in my life is “routine”! 😊Anyone who would try and follow me, would give up pretty quickly!🤪I don’t even know what each day will bring! And I love it that way!!!Probably why I can get bored easily if I don’t do anything different!! Loving the boat!! Life is never a straight path forward!! Oh, and remember, we have been getting slammed by CME’s from the sun, which has the Schumann Resonance up and down! Getting squeezed and then releasing! It’s a lot lately. A lot of migraines reported by people!! Take care!!! 🌴😊
You guys are awesome. Love your channel. You are so lucky to have such a fabulous lifestyle. Of course you will always have hiccups in life, but you two always seems to stay positive thru it all. Would love to spend a week on your boat just to experience your beautiful life. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
This episode brought back so many memories. My dad and I would frequently deliver boats up and down the West coast of the US. Some trips were nothing but routine sailing and following a schedule that would get quite boring. It was the times that we would sail through storms and searching for good anchorage’s was always difficult because of the volume of boats in every one of them.. often we would just split up the watches and keep moving. At least the winds were typically predictable. We always had boats with the good old “iron sails”. As I said the memories flooded back and even though they were trying times they always taught me so many good lessons in practical sailing.
That was so much work. Honestly, I felt bad thinking of Jason working on this video when he really needed to get some much needed sleep. Nicki do you still get sinus headaches since your surgery? That sure IS a beautiful home you guys have
Thankful you are safe and getting everything figured out. Praying for your safety and that all your repairs can be completed properly and efficiently. You guys are amazing Cheering You Guys On. 💝🙏💝
From a couple living our dream aboard a Power boat, we so appreciate your genuineness, your stories, your travels, your beautiful videos, and all your hard work. Although we don't have a sail stick in the middle of our boat, we get you.
Wow, thank you! We call days like these being "blissfully frustrated". Because there's no place you would rather be, but it doesn't mean you always love every moment of it. And as boater, you know exactly what I am talking about.
You definitely need at least a net or gaf to help you get the fish out. But every fisherman knows not to touch the line when the fish is on because when the line is grabbed it has no flexibility that the rod gives if and the fish can shake off easily. So at least a gaf or net, preferably a rod and reel. Just, only if you actually want the fish in the boat!! 😁
Amazing video! I always enjoy watching your videos, they tell a great story, bring the viewers on a world tour and show some of the real hard part of sailing. Thanks for allowing us to follow you on your journey!
Love, love, love the sunrise shift, so magical! That said, I don’t think it is possible to explain the feeling to a non sailor, when you are woken up by an anchor alarm. Definitely gets the blood pumping!
That 2 AM wakeup segment is why I would want a ship with a minimum 6 man crew (speaking ideally, not saying it would be realistically feasible). Three blocks of 8 hour watches with 2 people on watch, 2 people in an as-needed state, and 2 people asleep in their racks.
Have you considered or tried to go 'stern to' and use fixed lines? We’ve used this method in the Med when the seabed quickly moves to shallow depths. The anchor is pulled into the seabed to keep you offshore, while the fixed lines hold the boat securely in position.
There was a vid last week. You can always head to the blog (gonewiththewynns.com) and click on the archive tab. Vids are listed in order there, or you can click on a tab to explore a particular category. Binge on! Curious Minion
It's always a good ride with you sharing your experience with us. The land is passing by, seeing more of the Philippines than ever. Simply great. And thank you for the drone footage. Such impact from the vertical vantage point. You guys are so gifted. A true blessing for the rest of us.
Could you create an anchoring guide (places to go/avoid) for the places you go in the Philippines? It seems you're gathering valuable information for those of us planning to cruise these waters in the future😁
A sure way to loose a fish is to keep ploughing full speed ahead while trying to pull in the catch. Ease the sheets for a few moments while you draw in the fish and you will have a dinner.
Wow, you passed by my home town Moalboal, too bad you were not able to anchor there. Hope by this time warranty work on Curiosity is completed. Im impressed and at the same time exhausted just following your travels especially on those islands in my country that I don't know about. Thank you for sharing the good and the bad in your adventures, just like RVng. And that is how I first knew you through your blog , Gone with the Wynns which was about the same time of our RVng (LowesTravels)days. Both you and Jason have the best attitude and adventurous spirits. Keep on sailing.
Are we having fun yet? When I get into crazy situations I remind myself that I signed up for this. It’s how I made it through basic training. You signed up for this so suck it up and drive on! God bless and may you have fair winds and following seas!
That was a nice fish you lost, invest in an extension Galf, extension net and even a harpoon incase you get a bigger tuna or something, your first couple big fish will pay for this gear. Also a good Rod plus reel. You could be eating so good, those Mai Mai are tasty.
For Diesels being "bullet proof" as I've been told over and over. There doesn't seem to be a single RU-vid sailing channel who hasn't had major issues with there motors taking days of effort to fix. :D My own boat included
