To be fair to the other diners - I don't think asking for burgers at the end would've helped any of them, because none of them knew or understood what the burger represented, or what it *gave back* to the Chef when he cooked it. Only Margo/Erin knew. And the Chef *knew* that she knew, and was grateful for the gesture, which is why he showed her mercy. Great film! And it's so awesome to have you guys back! :)

One could also view this as an exchange of services. They are both service workers. He is a cook, providing clients with good food. She is an escort, providing her clients with fantasy fulfillment. The Chef has clearly dreamed of a diner calling him out for his BS and ordering a simple meal like a cheeseburger. She figures out his fantasy and offers to fulfill it for him. He accepts and they play things out. Once she is done satisfying him as a new client, she is now off-the-clock and gets to go home.

@@kellynolen498 exactly, well innocent relative to the other attendees. Which I was confused why the older wife got her fate other than being rich alongside her husband and I can't imagine they have any family to care for left or be concerned about. So in a sense she had nothing left to live for in finding out that her husband was fooling around with Margot. Plus, perhaps insulting Chef by mistaking and forgetting which fish dish they were previously served

THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT: The entertainment industry, every character is designed to represent different people in the filmmaking process, there's an interview somewhere where the creators discuss this. It's about being a creative person, with everyone else is either helping the process, slowing it down, profiting off it, or criticizing it.

The rich people were almost completely oblivious to the chef's intentions until the sous chef unalived himself. Anna Taylor Joy's character seemed like she was catching on faster. I think that speaks to the oblivious nature that rich people take with who they consider "the help", the service workers that clean up after them and feed them. They don't consider them at all. Nicholas Holt's character didn't care what the sous chef's, Jeremy, name was because it didn't matter to him. At the end, they were all cowards that ultimately didn't do anything to keep themselves from being unalived.

So yeah, like you said a lot of The Menu is a commentary on class and wealth. But I want to kind of expand on some things you mentioned in your wrap up. Head chef Feinnes obviously got started as a burger flipper, where he discovered his love of the culinary arts. Then the critics found him and elevated him to new heights. At first he enjoyed it, he could flex his culinary and creative muscles. (I haven't seen the movie in a while, sorry if I skip over some stuff) His continued growth was bought and funded by drowned angel-man. As his restaurants became more high class, his food stopped being for people to enjoy. His clientele shifted to people who were only there for the prestige that his name brought. Gordon Ramsay charges 26 USD for a single basic-ass burger, once you get that big you're a slave to the rich. So when you ask why all the other chefs went along with it, it's because they too lost their souls. The rich took their passions, they have to constantly one-up themselves to appease shitty critics ("how many restaurants have you destroyed with your little reviews") so they have no free time. They became food machines for people who couldn't even be bothered to taste it. Hollow lives to serve soul-rending food to hollow people. Erin (Margot), is established as a prostitute. She gives men pleasure for money, so of course she manages to hone in on the one thing that could please Feinnes. There are a couple ways to read the burger scene I think. In my mind, she successfully dragged him back into lower class thinking and he responded almost reflexively to her request to take her order and leave. Another read is that she gave him a spark of joy and when she didn't finish her burger it denied him the chance to give back. Given the whole "givers and takers" thing, I could see him choosing to let her leave as a way to complete the transaction. I think you got most of Hoult's deal, he's not a chef, he just worships them. He buys what chefs say are great products but he doesn't have the education to support it, and has no idea what he's doing. Like, not even home cook level. That said, if you do everything chefs tell you to do, buy what they tell you to buy and kiss their ass 100% of the time, then yeah I guess when super-chef says 'kill yourself' you'd do that too. Last thing (lord knows this comment is long enough) you questioned why the other guests didn't try to escape the same way. Aside from the usual 'rich people are useless' reason, the meal is a status symbol. They can't order the burger, that's poor people shit. The same way they don't fight back, it would be like fighting their own extravagant wealth. Anyway, liked your commentary and thoughts on this one. Welcome back fellas, looking forward to the rest of these reactions, I hear they're bangers. Personal rating's like an 8.5-9, I think this one gets better every rewatch (was a 7 the first time around).

At the very beginning when they are getting off of the fairy to go to the island, the “foodie” guy said blah, blah, and Margo replied, “It’s your dime.” That is the only mention (hint) of him hiring her as an escort. I LOVE Judith Light. I wish they would have used her more. Hong Chau, Elsa, was nominated for an Oscar that year for “The Whale”. All of the discussion around her after the release of both films by the Academy was, which film will she be nominated for. There was no question about her strength in both films, but they were both going to be in the Supporting Actress category. They nominated her for The Whale and ‘the Oscar goes to…’ Jamie Lee Curtis. No surprise, but it really put Hong on the map to greatness. She had the best two lines in the whole film. “These are Toortiiilllas.” (Dead pan face as she is talking to him sarcastically,) and “You will eat less than you desire and more than you deserve.” Now THAT’S intimidating and threatening!! Perfect delivery on both. This is not a horror film. This is the textbook example of a Dark Comedy… plain and simple. This was a fun reaction!! I also gave it an 8 the first time I saw it. (Just a thought for you to think about in the future… the “coming up” segments you have before your intro are giving too much away, and in my opinion for what it’s worth, a little irritating. But it’s your channel. You do you. I’m just here for the pop corn and eye candy!) 🤤

looking at it from a SW lens really made relate to Erin a lot more than probably the average audience member. There's also the whole theme of are you with the givers or the takers, but neither of them want or even care if the SW is on their side, we're almost "other"d, the whole "you're not supposed to be here" vibe, but i did really like the blip of "do you enjoy what you do?" "oh i used to but..." It's got a whole fuck ton of layers and ways to interpret the themes and I really enjoy that

A cult often revolves around a charismatic leader whom its followers adhere to unquestioningly, regardless of the absurdity or peril of his actions. In "The Menu," his staff revered him as a deity, while the victims, feeling utterly hopeless, ultimately resigned themselves to their fate.

Tyler is such an interesting character... he worships the culinary industry and devours it on an intellectual level, but doesn't have even the most basic skills to be a real part of it. Tyler builds his self-worth by knowing every detail about the science of food, but he doesn't understand the art and passion of it. Watch chef's face when he offers his guests the chance to ask him anything about himself and all Tyler cares about is identifying the bergamot in his tea. I don't believe Tyler "wants" to die, he just desperately wants to feel like he belongs in this clique of fine dining people. He thinks chef invited him to this dinner because chef appreciates Tyler's knowledge. He has no idea that he has been invited because he is another aspect of the food industry that the chef loathes.

I think the term Tom and Sean were searching for - this movie isn't quite a comedy, but it is _satire_ - parody's more-serious emo cousin. I just love this movie. I went in not knowing anything about it except that it was labeled a horror/comedy, and although I didn't find any of it especially strong in either as far as they're usually expressed. It's much more of a black comedy/almost-psychological horror and does both those really well. I thought everyone was really well cast too, especially the main 4. As for why everyone just went along with it at the end, the staff were probably that dedicated to Chef Slowik that they never once thought of going against him, and I think the rest of the customers were just that broken down after everything they saw that they, too, just accepted their deaths as being fact.

I don't totally buy the guests' passivity at the end but I can see how the staff would go along with the chef. They're very cult-like. The staff, chef, and food are their whole lives: they live on the island, barely leave it, have no room for family and friends. They sleep close together on cots and use the bathroom in front of each other. They spend their entire days preparing the food then go to bed to do the same thing the next day. From what we saw of Jeremy during The Mess monologue, it's a miserable life. The chef's anger at John Leguizamo's character comes from how he had one day off for the first time in weeks and went to see what turned to be a terrible, very lazy movie, wasting the little free time he had.

Erin was the only smart guest there. She was able to see that them not getting bread is because Slowik sees everyone else as evil vermin

I absoluyely do NOT agree with your rating! It's a 9-9.5, if anything 😄 I hadn't laughed that much over a movie since forever when I first watched it.
