It’s not cannibalism in a literal sense, but given how the island itself and the living quarters within are uncomfortably similar to a cult compound, I would consider the Chef a cannibal in his own way. Like a cannibal he has devoured the humanity of every other person in his kitchen and feasts on those he chose for his last menu. It’s just not in a literal sense and more of an emotional/metaphorical sense.

Chef allowed Erin to go free not only because she chose as her heart's desire, from anything he could have prepared for her, a common cheeseburger - a very common-folk item - but mostly because she gave him a moment of that actual love of his craft of serving people something delicious. She gave him something he hadn't felt in a very long time.

I also think that it’s less a question of if they deserved to die, because they were all just metaphors, not real people. They all simply represented ideas and bad habits and self-centeredness that contribute to making a creative service un-fun, a job, a chore, a misery instead of an art, and those ideas definitely needed to die.

I’m loving so many reaction channels are watching this movie! I really loved this film and it’s such a cool concept. Showing how people get burned out and exploited because of industries that only care about profit, losing the passion you once had, just, no pun intended, chefs kiss! If I may add something about Tyler, I think what chef meant with him being the reason why things are wrong is because he’s one of those “fans” that thinks they have a special connection to who they idolize, and thinks he’s superior to others cause he has the information available, even though he does not have any of the expertise it requires to actually do what those cooks do. Also, I have to commend the movie for not portraying Margo’s job as a sex worker as something shameful.

I highly suggest looking up ‘chef Reacts to the menu’ here and watching it. There’s one girl, she’s a black former chef. She gives SO much more insight into this movie that no one but chefs would comprehend. Every dish, including the appetizer on the ferry to the island, is purposeful and has underlying meaning. Sometimes even explaining what’s going to happen next. Jeremy’s The Mess was a literal representation of blood, sweat, and tears. I forget how she explained that’s what’s on the plate, but it’s fascinating. And like at 8:00, she explains exactly why it’s on rocks. And no, not for presentation.

Regarding the woman who came with the actor who went to Brown university, she died because Brown university is a very expensive university. Since she didn't have to take out any student loans means that she or her parents paid for it. This meant that she was one of the elites just like everyone else who was invited. That is why he told her that she was going to die.
@alastairwallace6153
@alastairwallace6153 Год назад
Exactly this, I cant believe people are missing the social aspect to this film and why all the staff and Chef are angry and why that young lad shot himself - no matter how good he was these idiots would never be satisfied and would have ruined his life one way or another - I reckon by killing the snobs along with themselves at the time of their choosing was about taking that power back from the elite and saying, now your lives are in our hands.

I truly think whats her face was able to leave because the chef knew, and his followers knew she wasnt meant to be there. And her last gift to him was a moment of forgiveness - almost of charity - for that moment, he enjoyed his passion of cooking again. In real life, anyone whose depressed knows you just have to look for to happiness, and joy in the world - its there if your willing to find it. Honest. He's more than likely psychotic, insane, and deluded in every way - but after being shown that joy before his darkness, he was able to save someone who was (more than likely) pure...er than the person who WAS suppose to be there. If anyone else had tried to pull that memory - it likely wouldnt have worked, because they all are worthless to him. But he truly connected (as well as anyone hardened chef can) to her, as a fellow 9-5 gal (working class person, who actually uses effort to get something they want, rather than it being handed to them). Id like to think this restaurant in its hayday mightve actually been something beautiful, but the darker chef got, the more evil seeped into his depressed mind. A simple way to avoid this would be having some kind of oversight on the island. Some regulations, or cameras, or something catch him doing bad things and getting caught - or if he truly made the effort to give them their moneys' worth - like making cheeseburgers of whatever kind for each of them or something. (or simply not hiring the crazy girl who proposed the idea of this night, or chef too - keep him away from the restaurant.... and you dont have a murderous restaurant...).
@x340x
@x340x 11 месяцев назад
what? the chef didnt do anything that evil before this night, where did you get this? he was simply fed up with the archetypes of the customers he chose for his last menu and with himself. the point of the movie is he and his staff lost their passion for cooking a good meal on their way to find perfection, sacrificing everything for people who didnt really give a shit about the food, it was simply a status symbol for them while the chef and the staff basically lived in the restaurant trying to please people that couldnt even remember what they ate. if you think this was about evil chef and crazy murderous girl souschef you really didnt understand the movie like at all lmao.
@fazelok
@fazelok 11 месяцев назад
@@x340x okay? but no sane person can deliberately attack someone else - he was deranged the whole time/depressed. The last time he ENJOYED COOKING was when he made burgers at the restaurant, when he was a young adult - its been years since then, and he went from being happy, to miserably serving expensive food, that no one cared about. THAT is what was being said. He wasnt evil, but he got deluded in his desire to please others, he lost the passion for the craft he had when he was what, 20 or 30 in the picture? And yes, he chose people that had the same thing happen to them, ending up at that point with a group dedicated to that same perfection without passion that he has, thats the point of the whole thing, and why they were all just ready to k*ll themselves too. So single person would just randomly snap after 'not being perfect that last time', theres a thing called emotions, and build up, intensity of emotions, etc. Depression, and then the breaking point when its too much, and they feel like they all cant just give up, and start over doing what they love right then and there, make burgers, and only burgers for their customers, rather than trying to nail perfection, as a critique of food, and then getting their feelings hurt because they did it for guests they didnt want in the first place, which they couldve done.

The customers were chosen because they were the ones who ruined the art of cooking. The woman and the guy who review restaurants and have them closed were chosen for the obvious reason. Tyler was invited because of his attitude of letting the world know that he’s eating good (taking pics of the food he’s eating). The three guys are embezzling money from the company. The old couple were super rich and just needed something to spend their money on and don’t even remember what they eat. The actor and his assistant for the reason that the chef said in the movie. All of this people ruined the art of cooking and the whole point of it. They took cooking and food for their own benefit and that’s the reason why the chef lost his appetite and joy for cooking.

The patrons couldn't just enjoy a good meal. The cooks got no pleasure really from the service they trained so hard and sacrificed so much to be able to provide. The restaurant benefactors couldn't appreciate a successful concept without trying to exploit the business for more profit. The critics couldn't appreciate the artistry or the painstaking effort or the quality of the product without finding and focusing on the most minute flaws. So sad.

From the original script: Lillian wasn't completely exaggerating when she said she put Chef on the map: He had another high end restaurant before Hawthorne, called Tantalus. Got 2 Michelin stars 2 years in, then closed up shop. Isn't heard from again until 3 years later, running a taco truck in Portland. He agreed to the interview only if he could keep his privacy, his own land, and it had to be by the water so he could source his own fish. It's established the movie star has a peanut allergy during the tour, and this turns out to be setup for the menu's eighth course, where Felicity is ordered to force feed him a dish completely comprised of peanuts so as to kill him through anaphylactic shock. Anne (wife of man who paid Margot to look like his daughter while j*cking him off) actually couldn't eat The Island as is due to a shellfish allergy. Hers was salmon. The broken emulsion gag escalates to where the servers literally waterboard Lillian with it. The restaurant has hidden cameras in the dining room, so even if Elsa missed something, it still got caught. The taco truck Chef was running was, according to him, the happiest he'd ever been, but Margot calls him out on it later, asking why he parked his truck at a Food Expo where he KNEW food critics were going to be, if he wanted to be left alone. Man's Folly was supposed to have more details about a woman chef's actual experience in the kitchen, from harassment to stereotypes. The women DO get bread with Man's Folly, and it IS as delicious as promised. You can even see Tyler chewing on bread when Chef comes up to confront him afterwards. Not only did Tyler bring Margot knowing she would die, he sincerely thought Chef was going to spare him. And even when called out on it, he STILL didn't apologize or take it back, because all he cared about was experiencing the menu. Them all coming to the kitchen to watch Tyler screw himself over wasn't originally in the script. They were just supposed to watch from the dining room. Margot makes another bid for her life before being ordered to go get the barrel. Which Chef appreciates enough to tell her so. Margot smiles upon seeing Tyler's hanging. Lillian realizes she's never going to get to write about this last experience, and THAT ends up being her real just desserts. Instead of dropping the ashes to set it all on fire, Chef originally drops a match. The last scene is of firefighters combing through the burnt wreckage, and the very last thing we see is the one photo of Chef as a young man, flipping a burger, but happy.

Its not a cult, its more like a social commentary, if you understand why the young chef shot himself, and that he liked Erin because she was working class/poor like Chef was growing up and the whole staff + chefs disdain for all the snobs, that's what it is really about, in a sense revenge of their collective mistreatment at the hands of those who dont even know their names or care for their lives.

Well it's not NOT a cult either. The thing was it was a cult long before the killing people part came in. Back when it was a regular restaurant and people spent their entire waking day working for a chance to become a revered chef only to sleep in a compound with all the others to get any chance for a few hours rest. They gave up their whole lives to be a part of the cult of cuisine happening on the island. Their whole social critic was that in a way high end cooking and the service industry had become a sort of cult.

Regarding Tyler, yes, his menu was somewhat put off because Tyler brought someone else, but what he really meant was "people LIKE Tyler" was the ruination of his art. Tyler is like a presumptuous foodie, arrogant and big-headed, putting others down for 'not-knowing', pretending to be better than he is. He knows a bunch of details but it's just to show off - and Chef's saying that people *like him* pretend to be as good as real chefs and cooks who work so damn hard to perfect their craft. This is why he had to demonstrate what people like Tyler really are deep down, just annoying big talkers lol. All that knowledge yet he couldn't prepare a simple meal. So yeah, Tyler is the embodiment, and representative, of people like that. REALLY great movie! Really enjoyed it, so funny! The only one I felt shouldn't have died was John Leguizamo, seemed like a cool guy, but he had his flaws too. Looking forward to the next reaction!

Oysters and lemon mignonette - Common flavors put together that have to be broken down and deconstructed, foreshadowing what happens to the guests. This is meant to be taken as Chef throwing down the gauntlet. Amuse Bouche - More foreshadowing. Charred lace - crater. Milk snow - ash from the fire. Cucumber and melon - the guests. The Island - Scallop on a rock - Chef presenting himself to the guests. Plants - "in the weeds" Breadless bread plate - straight up snarking at picky customers. But you can also make a case for Lilian's plate having a broken emulsion on purpose as his way of saying SHE'S as useless as a broken emulsion. Memory - Self explanatory The Mess - Pressurized vegetables - literal pun. Bone marrow - blood. Beef jus - sweat. Potato confit - tears. Man's Folly - Plum vinegar exists because of Umeboshi, whey plays a vital part in making yogurt, sea kelp and lettuce are what keeps the oceans biome from wreaking havoc. But everyone either doesn't know that or forgets, because they don't taste good, aren't as attractive, or can be very difficult to work with in their natural form. It's the same with women, especially when they try to speak out against unfair treatment like what the chef describes. They get called things like "bottom feeders", like crabs. Final scene with Margot/Erin eating the cheeseburger - She didn't care about giving him peace of mind. She just wanted to survive. And Chef acknowledged that. Using his menu as a napkin - She never believed anything he said for one second. She is, in fact, a taker that knows her worth. And that's why she lived.

He also plays the terrifying Nazi antagonist Amon Göth in Speilberg's heartbreaking Holocaust movie "Schindler's List" (starring Liam Neeson), for which he was nominated for the Oscar of Best Supporting Actor. He's also a world renowned stage actor.

During the cheeseburger scene, the smells drove the cast so crazy that John Leguizamo ended up ordering cheeseburgers and fries for all. Not just because she's seen the picture but also because she, as a working.class person, is the only one to truly understand him. Both of them loved their job when they started out but as they got increasingly richer clients, their love for their job crumbled as they couldn't satisfy their clients and their clients treated them like it's nothing symbolized in Mr. Liebbrandt who treats the expensive meals like it's just another dish while treating Erin like crap while demanding horrible roleplays from her. Also, Erin was the only one who could see the value in a cheap meal that was made with love and passion, something that none of the others would probably associate with cheaper food and they likely never ordered a cheeseburger.

*SPOILER* . . . Erin/Margot dies. They specifically bring up the aged beef and it's toxic effects, the chef mentions there's a savory course left in the menu when only dessert is remaining, she gets her burger medium which is a food safety risk, the boat breaks down suspiciously right outside the island, we end with her taking a bite and the chef's CLAP indicating it's part of the menu after all.
@xaten1923
@xaten1923 Год назад
The director has already confirmed that was not the case. Why would a chef spend that long perfecting his art to serve rotten meat? It makes no sense. Smoked meats are used for sausages and the like and not used to make burger mince. The raw burger meat is too light to aged, it would have a deeper red colour compared to the light pink shown. The boat was stopped intentionally to sit and reflect while eating an apparently pretty good burger. The burger was not a part of The Menu as it was referred to as supplemental meaning to replace the original course. Plus there was no mention of the meat being on the precipice of becoming deadly. For all we know it could have been put in there that morning. Not everything is a Chekhov's Gun.

Food for thought: Does Margo live? The chef's clap at the end when she took her last bite. The smokehouse (meat) part of the tour in the beginning? She's dead. The meat was not aged long enough, so she will die of food poisoning, not by the chefs hand. So macabre. This is no comedy, it's horror. It is loosely based on Agatha Christie's Ten Little Indians ..., or And Then There Were None. Awesome film with spectacular performances! Enjoy your video's. 😀BTW, a bit of trivia, Ralph Fiennes who played the chef was Voldemort in the Harry Potter films. For me: Pop, solid 10. On my top 5 list of the best films of 2022.

@@MrfuckinBeilke not everything has to be a chekhov’s gun for a major twist. I hate this theory and everything it stands for because: 1) it was stated that the meat would go bad the day after the intended aging period ends. Why would they have bad meat if they were all planning to die that night in a spectacle? 2) it doesn’t work thematically. The burger represents the joy in cooking, it’s what saves Erin/Margot from death by being a connection to the working class instead of high concept dining. It makes no sense to also have it be the instrument of her death. It the kind of twist someone would only think of for shock value, ignoring any plot or thematic coherence. 3) The conversation about the meat exists to establish character. It shows that the tech bros are very jocular and aren’t taking the tour seriously, and that by contrast the restaurant staff are very knowledgeable about culinary science and take everything seriously/literally. It’s also a bit of setting up the later mood with how eerie it is.

‏Margot / Erin actually died after the second bite of the burger that was the plot twist it’s a follow up on what they mentioned about aged cow meat bacteria at the start of the film. So taking that second bite sealed her fate and she probably already felt it after the first bite already and thought it would be a quicker death if she just finished eating. Or maybe she died not knowing but her facial expression before taking the second bite felt like she deep down knew she’s already dead. it’s a plot twist 99.9% of reactors so far missed because of how subtly it was executed! And it also shows that the start of a movie usually ties a lot to the end plot and therefore should be attentively considered. The reason Margot died is because she’s a privileged child with 80,000$ college tuition to brown.
