Olivier did, in his autobiography and his book On Acting, note that he deliberately made Shylock repugnant and dark of soul; Shylock's "dance" when he hears of Antonio's ill luck is a case in point. Olivier based this on newsreel footage of Hitler dancing on Jewish graves. Small wonder that his portrayal is unsympathetic--but still brilliant and, in the final scenes, heart-breaking.
