So...Hephaestus accidentally had a kid with his great Grandma who was raised by his ex-crush whom he actually intended to have that kid with. Greek relations sure are messed up.
Well she hated Zeus with good reason too. He tricked her into a marriage she didn't want, and he raped her. Not to mention he cheated on her over and over and over again.
Athena has been my favorite god. She always seemed to be the most fair and level headed out of all the gods (assuming you go with the good versions of the Medusa and Arachni stories, which I do).
Actually, the real version of the story doesnt include athena or Psiedon...she was a gorgon born ugly (also had siblings)...and arachne, like u said, has a good version. So, she is probably the best greek god in comparison to the other major gods. She and artemis are my favs
@UCTfQDN8KdGFtxQoopMJtT Actually in the original Greek myth, Medusa is born a gorgon and is instead seduced by Poseidon while Athena had no business with them.
Well if the food is decoration then I'd say it's doing it job as a symbol of economic prosperity. Gonna assume Kunta in South Sudan would be eating that mfer.
Manophere. com ? I said aw because I think guys can do more traditionally feminine things and girls can do traditionally masculine things. I don’t feel insecure over it at all because gender is made up by society. Why’d you have to be rude about it lol?
Wow, I'm early! I recommend the SoloMerch. Blue from Overly Sarcastic Productions once said, "Athena is the god of smart war, and Ares is the god of dumb war".
5:34 - I'd never heard this story before! I knew Athena was often called Pallas Athena, but I never knew this was why! 8:37 - I'm impressed that they created a character who was half human and half snake and didn't just automatically write him off as a monster! 10:25 - On the other hand, she gave us a creature that eats flies and thus helps keep the fly population down a little. I've always liked Athena! Thank you for doing this, Jon!
Pallas is also the name of the God of Warcraft. Probably Athena’s own husband at some point before she was the “virgin” goddess. Sorry I don’t do virgins.
I could be mistaken but isn't there a version of the Medusa story where Medusa is narciccstic and claims to be more beautiful than Athena in Athena's temple so Athena makes her ugly. I was so excited about this messed up origins video since I ♥️ Athena so thanks Jon solo
@@barbie5623 thank you for being reminding me of that in a polite manner. I loved the video but that was just something that came to mind though I do feel bad for Medusa😭
Athena has always been one of my favorites! I’m so pumped you finally had time to cover her. Hearing the other sides of the Medusa story and the spider one, they were definitely awesome.
Not really sure what series you could work this into but I’d love to hear you cover the mythos behind Lilith. I think it’s super interesting and not generally known.
In one of the versions, hepheastus tried to aproached her, athena fought him off but some of his blacksmith soot fell on her thigh, which she removed with her hand that second. Then it fell on the ground, ericthonius was born, and athena became his foster mom. I like this version cuz athena remained a virgin, and she was kind to the boy too.
Ever since I was a kid and learned about Athena, I fell in love with her story. Been waiting a while for you to do a video on her background. And btw, loved the "I'll show myself out .." bit.
I am so glad that you included the Greek versions of the Medusa and Arachne myths! I often refused, as a child growing up, that such a level-headed Goddess would let jealousy and pride over-ride her senses (though not uncommon, there really isn't any other proof than these isolated myths) and after some more research, I found the Greek versions and thought to myself 'That sounds like Athena.'
Hephaestus is a highly creative force. Through his wounds (ie: shame for being different due to perceived flaws, his volatility, inexpressible rage, etc.) through his vulnerability comes an infusion of great healing power and unbridled creativity.
Athena's difference with Ares is that Athena's especiality is planning and tactics meanwhile Ares is more combat-wise. That means neither is as good when not partnered with each other.
Like I think Ares holds back or Zeus protects Athena cause as we know men are much stronger than women. So I think Ares could do some serious damage to Athena if they were on an even playing field
@@angelacooper8973 Except these aren't mere men and women, they are gods and their sex is much less relevant. Zeus doesn't need to protect Athene, she simply is stronger than most gods, male or female. Ares definitely doesn't hold back, he is just weak. Read Iliad book 21 and see for yourself.
The story I read about Metis had nothing to do with him eating her- it was rape/murder He chased her around the earth trying to rape her. Since they both could shape shift Zeus had a hard time tracking her down but determined to defile a woman be persisted and knocked her out and raped her.[head injury] Later he got a vision/fortune that the child Metis bore would over throw him, so he caught Metis again and killed when she was pregnant by knocking her out [head injury] then killing her. That when he got the headache, and gave birth to wisdom. Man gives birth to wisdom after killing the woman he raped and the resulting child. Historical this kind of made scenes, some cultures would kill the young males of the cultures the concurred because they knew when they grew up they be warrior seeking revenge. but its fucked up all the same
That's always been their appeal to me. They're admittedly flawed. I've been put off by the God of Abraham from an early age because he's obviously seriously flawed but still claimed to be perfect. Even without the claim of perfection by believers, he's a pretentious ahole in a lot of the stories in religious texts.
@@mikethehunter5212 - I can't choose to believe in "the forgiving God" or any other deity. I'm either convinced that they exist and that I should worship them, or I'm not convinced. And at this point, I'm not convinced. There's no valid basis for concluding that any deities exist. We have no valid evidence that any nonhuman has even claimed to be a deity. And why worship any being? What decent being would want to be worshipped?
@@mikethehunter5212 - Faith doesn't motivate me. And it appears that the faith you're speaking of could be used to believe in anything (including things that contradict each other). How is that a valid guide for behavior? Why be a decent person if death is the end? Because I don't want to mistreat people, I don't want to cause undue harm to others, I want to be proud of the life I've lived, I want to be a good role model for my kids, I want to be liked by other people and enjoy my time with them, I don't want to go to prison, I'm not a sociopath, etc. Was that a sincere question, or were you just being intellectually lazy?
I think my favorite Athena story was the one where her stalker assaults her, ends up getting his own grandmother pregnant, only for Athena to raise that baby.... wtf Greece?
I heard a similar story where Athena gets angry at a mortal man and tricks his daughter into sleeping with him (idk how the man didn't realise it wasn't his wife, it may have been the darkness lol). When she gives birth he is horrified to find the child is his son and grandson. So he casts her out and she gives birth but rejects the child, and Athena watching over decides to take the child in.
Yep. It was Hephaestus. I actually just watched the episode of Great Greek Myths about Athena and it was revealed that Hephaestus had been tricked by Poseidon, thinking that Athena was coming to, you know, do the do. He got too eager and ripped her tunic, showing her in all her glory, and that's when he accidentally came on her thigh.
Zeus has a headache, had one of the other Gods (Ares if I remember right) crack his head open with an axe and put popped Athena, full grown and full adorned in her battle-armour God-outfit ... or that’s the way I was taught it when we did Greek stuff in school. And all I can think remembering that is *”Ouch!”* 😂😂😂
I'm happy I found this video! Athena had been one of my favorite Gods since I was a kid, and watching the Campione! anime a few years back made me more curious about her pre-Zeus origins. That show had her being this goddess outside of Zeus's domain that he devoured out of fear for her power. The Metis angle makes it quite interesting.
I have been anxiously waiting for you to do the mythology for Athena, She is absolutely my favorite goddess and I named my daughter after her. YOU DID GREAT I might add... There are a few things about her it would have been nice to hear you talk about. HOWEVER, you did really well as always. The mythology of Athena is what started my love of mythology all around.
thank you so much! I plan on doing additional videos on all of the gods I cover just so I can get into the myths a little more (as well as what they evolved from) so this def won’t be our only time discussing her :)
According to Plato, the citizens of Sais, Egypt worshipped a Goddess called Neith. Neith was a Goddess of war and hunting and was also associated with weaving.
I love Athena She’s my FAVORITE Greek goddess thank you so much for this video I’ve been waiting for this video for ages For your next video can you plz do Artemis goddess of the hunt she’s my second favorite goddess
I always heard the version that Poseidon’s gift was a horse but Athens was rocky and “hilly” (for lack of a better word) so the horse was literally useless. It’s always cool to see the difference in stories lol
Are nuts fruits? Lol I dont think I've ever heard a definitive explanation for what's in common with all fruits and nothing else. Who's the guy that exclaims what is fruit and what is not on whatever whim he felt that day? I didnt know olive was a fruit either. 😓
Athena is definitely my favorite of the Greek Gods. And, "Match made in Olympus..." a joke like that, Solo, deserves a bounty so large that you won't be able to go near a civilized system.
The popular Medusa backstory is actually Roman, not Greek. In the original Greek version Medusa is born a monster and she is instead seduced by Poseidon while Athena had nothing to do with it.
Greek person here! I really appreciate the fact that you make these videos for people to feel interested in Greece and it's history (myths being a huge part of it). I have to say, your pronunciation of the words is really funny. They're wrong but it's super adorable! Keep up the great work!!!! I could binge watch your videos for hours even if I know the stories better than I know my own name! Also fun fact: Arachne means spider
The story I know of Arachni is she hung herself after Athena wove her tapestry showing the "future of man", to paraphrase, so the goddess felt sorry for her and turned Arachni into a spider.
I find it interesting that the most revered goddesses were virginal. I suppose they didn't believe that a female figure of power could also procreate. Or maybe they just respected a female figure who put all her power into helping men with their efforts like war or hunting. The goddesses that had children seemed to always get disrespected in the myths.
Lol I always found it weird that gods were usually men when women in real life were pushing humans through their vaginas... I mean yeah, women do it all the time but like... lol. That's some crazy shit 😂
We can have it all. I can be a mother and a boss bitch. That’s why when I play Sims I tend to make the virgin goddesses marry. Plus Athena and Artemis are Zeus daughters. He probably forbade them to marry.
Heh…myths in olden days were way more fun than the crap you get now. Not just Greek/Roman stuff, either - look into Norse or East Asian myths…like the Norse one about how poetry came to exist… XD Anyway, I explain the discrepancies about Athena like I would those of any old-timey god: they weren't perfect, and they weren't supposed to be. Athena was just and good, but she had a prideful streak. Gods back in the day were allowed to be complex, and I count that as a good thing. Side note: Jon, you can stop shaming me, I've stopped skipping your ad reads. XD
I thought you would talk about the Apple of Discord and the trouble it caused between Athena, Aphrodite and Hera, that lead to the Trojan War. Golden apples in mythology is interesting enough in itself. I would like to see you do that.
