Try THE SOUL GENE. The ending is more satisfying. I love Irving, though. Just re-read The Water Method Man. It's brilliant.

The only thing I (marginally) dislike about Irving’s work is when he injects politics, which he neither understands nor can intellectually articulate. When he grandstanded Gore and Kerry in “Last Night in Twisted River” it was nonsensical and added absolutely nothing to the story. The apotheosis of “A Prayer for Owen Meany” still confuses me after 4 decades and as many readings. That being said, his ability to create bizarre and arcane characters and yet somehow make them appear completely normal is amazing. The characters in “Son of the Circus” were so extreme that extremity became the norm, and the story flowed. The man is amazing. I’m lucky enough to possess an autographed copy of “Cider House Rules” made out to me that I cherish, but yet still lend to friends. I can’t imagine a world without the possibility of another John Irving dropping.

I read The World according to Garp and A Prayer for Owen Meany and I enjoyed both of them. John Irving is an original writer, funny with lot of excentric quirky characters . I like his writing style. I saw his new book at Waterstone and it's a big beast with 900 pages long. could they come up with a better title.
