One of the best edited films I've ever seen. Excellent acting all around. This film deserved more recognition than it originally received when it came out back in the early 90s.
Louis Lokuta 😂 yes a sandwich 🥪 can be very valuable if you’re hungry 😋. I only wrote my original post because at this point in the film the audience has NO IDEA what the contents of the briefcase are. Most people would have given the briefcase 💼 and minimal contents instead of fighting two thugs with knives 🔪. Obviously 🙄, not Michael Douglas’ character!
The briefcase is a metaphor for his old life. It is empty, shallow and all that resides is the bare essentials (sandwhich and an apple). He finally gives it up for his new life when he finds the bag of guns (destruction and chaos).
I was 16 when this came out and watched it sometimes in the mid 90s. now that 'm 41 & a working slave. This movie rings true more than anyoen can imagine
Agreed completely, unfortunately unless it has anything to do with race, gender, or any of that bullshit I doubt this comment will receive much attention since nobody cares about being a slave in the workplace sadly.
kritspoherson I just finished my school years and started to be in the working slave industry lol . Sucks but things aren’t cheap these days especially not knowing what career path you want . I miss being in my early childhood days
i wanna say there's a bill burr bit about never fighting the 35-40 yr old guy in the bar. he's dealing with a bitter wife, a shitty job, failing health, etc, and that's all gonna get taken out on YOU.
Lmfao I like the guy 80% of the time but Bill Burr is fully a shit. In America at least, most of those men are out of shape and dealing with health conditions that require going to the pharmacy 1-3 times per month. No grown dude pass his prime is fucking up real gang members or even dudes from college campus, sorry. Btw ask or read up on some of the best boxers/MMA fighters. Clear minds= much more room for error. Some dude who's running out of luck and has real issues will have a cloudy head. There's a reason why athlete's get paid so well, so their issues away from their sports can at least be compromised with $$$ like bills, college tuitions, food etc. Sounds like Bill Bur is going to get some middle age men fucked up lol. True prime for physically and mentally fit males in America/Canada are late 20s to really early 30s.
Specially after the trauma of lockdown under COVID. People has become more short tempered. I remember shuddering when I first watched Fallling Down. This is a very complicated and complex movie, it mirrors the most complicated and complex thing in the universe: man. At the end of his rope, he suffered injustice yet he turned self righteous. There’s a very good saying in English though: two wrongs don’t make a right. Even though I can identify with his emotional pain, violence / revenge is never the answer. But yeah, this a classical and visionary movie. It will always be current. It deals with mental decay, the man is really falling down, breaking down before our eyes. And this is very real, everywhere, all the time. Sad. I would really love hearing Dr. Jordan Peterson analysis on this character.
This movie is actually dealing with some serious subjects, but i couldnt stop laughing when he said 'You forgot your briefcase' and the dude was running away!
Easily his best role. I still don’t understand why so few people know this movie. Maybe it just resonated with me. But then again i am just a middle class white guy.
Great actor, but I could just not believe his character, no way did he look like he could pull off that scene with the Mexicans, they would have killed him.
@KingUnderTheStars yes, hoodlums come in all different colors. Unfortunately I think many people have the perception that it's mainly a specific race or ethnicity.
@@christopherwalker6056 I miss the 90s when hoodlums were considered hoodlums. Now it's back to being about race and ethnicity. Thanks identity politics and leftists.
@@ZeeboLaywicker because I'm at a point in my life where I don't care to be PC, i don't care what other's think, and the stress of life is pushing me over the edge. I won't going on a rampage. But I understand what pushed him to the limit...
I like it when he looked up at the sky and shook his head before saying that. When a white collar worker loses it, watch out! Before anyone jumps my shit, I did not say "white guy", I said "white collar".
Potcha Shamans if a kid in school is insinuating a school shooting massacre then he or she would probably get interrogated by the police and possibly have his or her home searched for any evidence of a potential school shooting.
@Zeal! The evidence speaks for itself in the fact that millions immigrate here or are in the process of applying to come here on a constant basis. Canada cannot compare, the UK cannot compare nor Australia....the USA is usually the first choice.
This was such an underrated film, not played too often and that's unfortunate. It shows someone who was pushed to the point that he snapped, and once he did, or was EPIC!
...probably the reason it ends as it does ...he was an "anti-hero" ...who went "off-track" ...one step away from being the sort of guy who would go on a workplace-rampage ...or go on to become a "domestic-terrorist"
One of my favorite movies. It really does a good job at explaining how a man can act once everything is taken away from him. It explains very well the bullshit that is happening even today.
This was such an under-appreciated movie. I think the critics didn't praise it too much, because it was so un-PC. Mike Douglas steps right into his dad's shoes as another great actor.
Critics liked it just fine. It's modern critics that don't talk that much about it, mainly because it never really caught on as a classic/cult classic. More people seem to remember Frank Grimes than DFENS.

Agreed. A great movie. Had Duvall and Tuesday Weld and Rachel ....
I had an engineering professor in college that dressed and looked just like this. ....hair, glasses.......everything...... when he saw the movie he started carrying a bag like that.......
MetalThunderForce he lost his sanity?? He is right about everything!! He just say everything everybody wants to say but never say or do but never do..,
Yeah, when the movie starts and he's sitting in the congested traffic lane he's already in prime meltdown. He doesn't snap after awhile, he's already gone.
Not one duped vet has done anything to defend the freedoms here in the states, not one has stopped the enemies within this country which are actually taking our freedoms. They just killed innocent civilians of other counties trying to live their own lives which retaliated back. All for the rich elite's games of power and profit.
Listen. When you walk up to a man and threaten him, and just talks calmly to you, maybe its a good sign to walk away. They're usually the crazy ones. Just saying
No, we are not crazy. We just don`t care and won`t be intimidated. Its like - if you want all I have, then you are going to have to take all I have....
This movie is genius, it's actually ironic in some way. The main character is considered a psychopath, but in reality, he isn't that crazy, maybe it's just society itself that made him that way. In other words, there's nothing wrong with him, he's just the product of our flawed society, it just so happens that he couldn't handle it.
One thing in this movie that’s often overlooked is the weapons. Each time he is confronted by the sickness of society, it upgrades his weapons. Becoming more and more violent and punishing to society, thus society gives him the upgrades of weapons. It’s a subtle symbology. He started with nothing, but the violent interactions each time, upgrade his response.
The briefcase was basically worthless, but in the mind of the character, that was all he had, so it mattered a great deal to him. It was worth fighting for. When people try to steal, there’s no consideration for relative worth. If there were, they might not steal as much.
If it mattered as much as you think it did, he wouldn't of given it to the the bum at the park. If I had something that I don't need or even want and someone came up to me demanding that I give it them, like in this clip, I am going to tell them to go fuck themselves. If they asked nicely however, I would say "Go ahead, take it, it's yours!". Get the picture? RECAP: Why did he not give the briefcase to the thugs? They were aggressive and violent. Why did he give the briefcase to the bum? He was only being annoying (non-violent), and he also wasn't getting the picture. Giving him the briefcase was the final "don't harass me, I ain't gonna help you, get off my back!", the bum annoyed him no more.
Well it wasnt worth something because thats all he had. not in the monetary sense. it was a matter of principle. it wasnt because thats all he had. its because its what he had. he had a lot more than a brief case.
@@logicalnotes5007, what evidence is there that they are not cowards? Did you not see them running? It takes a punk to mess with somebody innocent who doesn't seem threatening.
The only bad thing about this scene was that he threw his bat at the thug coming up the steps. He should have gone after him and given him a wallopin'.
lol, no. You guys keep thinking the people who call him nuts are on the side of the gang kids. No, it's because he watched the movie to the end. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cXPTzmUaptY.html
immigrants actually lower crime. When people flee violence the last thing they want is trouble. I do wish Trump supporters would actually do a little research. Fox news is brainwashing you.
@@ivv6721 This film predicts what all white men will go through over the next 30 yrs or so...once he's had enough of all the bullshit and once he's sick of being penalized for being white... eventually the white men are going to unite and rise up against the shit... starting with those evil traitors..'the white liberals' those stupid fuckers fuelling their own demise and not intelligent enough to realize it...yep we'll exectute them first... then we'll take power over all governments and return to a christian way of life where people can prosper as families, we will reinstate education systems that work, like the one's our fathers and grandfathers had, we'll make the world a fair place, rewards for effort and hard work, we'll make sure the lazy will never be able to live off the state benefit system..we will take control of mass media and regulate it heavily to stop the destruction of young minds and promote wholesome and realistic values. people will live in a world were privilege is earned and not simply expected...
It's hard to believe that this awesome flick was directed by Joel Schumacher. The same guy who made the infamous Batman & Robin. One a masterpiece & the other.... well, you know.
Tobias Chance The guy is pretty good at making Psychological Thrillers surprisingly, another one of his films, Phone Booth resonates with me in a similar way to Falling Down, albeit it focuses more on the terror than the dark comedy shown in Falling Down but I like it. I share your confusion on how he could fuck up Batman and Robin so badly, maybe he had his hand forced and had to make decisions on the film he didn't want to do, I wouldn't know, all I do know is that he made Falling Down and Phone Booth, two really well made movies.. :D
I like how he upgrades his weapons. Started off with nothing, then upgrades to a bat, then a knife, then a gun, machine guns and shotguns, then a bazooka. Lol oh it's World War 3 for him
It's hard to not feel sorry for him at this point in the movie. He has the Classifieds section of the paper with him, with potential jobs circled. He's evidently been without a job long enough that he can't afford to buy new shoes, because at least one shoe has a large hole worn in the bottom, big enough to see through. He is tearing off a piece of the newspaper to put in the shoe to cover the hole. Then two gang thugs decide to hassle and rob him.
Well paced and some damn good acting. Michael Douglas could have easily over acted in this film but he played it just right. Satiating and entertaining.
I just love how Foster just casually walks away while toying with the gang member's knife just after his life was in danger a few minutes ago. "...how they do that?" 🤣
Mexicans are fine, like with any people there are bad ones in the bunch. Why are you even mentioning a Portuguese country like Brazil when talking about Mexicans?
Classic scene...."you couldn't let a man still 5 minutes on your piece of shit hill?....classic...Very underated film..Its not about the Chicanos....its about William and his bizarre trek thru Los Angeles on route to Venice to see his daughter at her birthday party, despite the restraining order against him frim his ex-wife....Douglas plays this as good as anyone could ever play this. Wonderful acting! Powerful and of course, disturbingly humorous movie. Duvals supporting role as sgt. Prendergrast is solid and pivotal to the plot.....
Clearly, they didn't learn, because criminal punks never learn. The only thing they learn is pushing and killing people around. They only stop when they're unable to do those things due to disability, incapacitation or their own death, not because they become good/better. Wiping them out is a noble deed.
I do. Clear a path mf'ers I'm going home! The rage in that moment, I feel it deep inside, I think many people do. Michael Douglas really nailed the D-Fens character, I love him in this role.

I so relate to this film....and for me it's less to do with race and more to do with an ordinary hard working man who has had enough of the bullshit, hatred and injustice and sometimes just plain rudeness of the world....
Just dl'ed the movie to see what it's about. The racist bullshit starts about 5 minutes in when he basically holds up some convenience store owned by a Korean guy with some nationalistic bullshit rhetoric about how Koreans are overcharging for soda, and "do you know how much money we gave your country". Like the U.S. didn't fucking invade Korea.
I agree completely but unfortunately I doubt anybody is going to pay much attention to this comment as class consciousness is regrettably not on people's minds anymore.
