This was a good fly (size 10) for me in a beautiful upstate New York trout stream for browns and rainbows. Thanks. A fun tie too.

I've been tying for 55+ yrs. and I have cancer .I was diagnose last year .I don't know if it is because of the fly tying materials I've used over the years. But, when it's now on almost every product we see these days "CAUSES CANCER" .YOU BE THE JUDGE.

Hopefully you’ll see this comment/question. Great pattern! I decided to give it a whirl. I’m having trouble with the segmentation with the flex floss. I’ve never worked with it before. Mine seems to be flat so I looked closely at yours to see if maybe there’s a round option and yours looks exactly like mine. I don’t feel I’m putting a lot of tension on it, but my wrap doesn’t seem to look as segmented as yours. Any suggestions? Thanks!
@TheFlyFiend
@TheFlyFiend 5 лет назад
Mine is flat too, it takes time and feel with tension to get how you want it to look. Keep practicing and you will get the results you want with time. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask!

To help build the body, why not just tie down the biots from the tail, instead of using the thread to build it up? What was your reasoning for doing it that way, if you don't mind?

I liked the pattern until you added the dubbing. I just thought it was too much, but this is just my opinion .

So many things wrong with the fly. These UV coatings do more harm than good... after the first fish the coating becomes damaged and dislodged.. it then changes from a clear coating to a whitened coating because it separates from the fly and theres a little air space.. becomes completely unnatural and it's a a chunk of rubber. Second you got about 3X's too much dubbing.. the abdomen is not that bulky.. Third.. the fly is not proportioned correctly. You have 50% abdomen and 50% thorax.. the abdomen is too large. The wing case is too small.. it should be 75% of the overall body..not 50%. If you tie the wing case the way you do.. it can only equal the thorax... the wing case actually extends half way beyond the thorax over the abdomen..on the real fly. And biot antennas dont help.. the tail is ok.. but not the antenna.. the natural insect has very thin and short antennae. You may catch a fish on this fly.. but it's not going to be a effective fish catcher..and not worth the time and energy. I used to tie flies like this.. your not going to catch any picky fish on slow days. This fly will only catch a occasional fish...if you can fish a really good spot where the fish are stacked up..and they become less discriminating because of competition

Mark Bolivar so with your comments, where is your stone fly ? Easy to be negative, you claim you tie better stones. I am not a fan of loon resins, Solarez is my preference. I have not had any of the problems you described. Depending on the waters you fish stones come in many varieties.
@baronvongrimm4780
@baronvongrimm4780 3 года назад
@@williamemmons8816 Theres about 5X too much dubbing. I'll save you some time... fish dont each furballs. I invite you to drop your fly in a glass of water and observe the UV coating under a magnifying glass. It cures to a cloudy color. And usually after a fish ...the tooth puncture it and its junk. I prefer varnish...
@williamemmons8816
@williamemmons8816 3 года назад
Mark Bolivar first off not my fly, second I have only had issues with loon products , never with solarez. And after your negative opinions I still don’t see your supposed superior version . Last I have had trout try to eat yarn , styrofoam and bubble style indicators . So far you are all talk.

@@williamemmons8816 I'm just saying a fly with that much body will never catch fish. And if you use about 5X less, you would have a better chance at catching fish. I prefer to create flies using materials that attract fish... I'm not talking attractor patterns... but materials. There are some magic materials out there that are flashy. But this guy and you if you think this fly is a fish catcher... need to understand why a sparsely tied fly is more buggy. My flies are secret... I have spent years pulling flies out of trees, finding flies in fishes mouths, found flies caught in the rocks, spent time being persistent and pushy trying to catch a glimpse of what another guy was using, been on the water and met people who have shared patterns, guides have shown me patterns, and some pretty good ones in books or magazines. I would never share any magic fly I use. If everyone was using my flies then it would be harder for me to catch them using my flies. That guy you see catching fish and you wonder what he's using... it's me. I have easily 2 dozen different proven patterns that I catch tons of fish. Not those hatchery fish that hit strike indicators... I'm a steelhead fisherman. I only use stoneflies to fish steelhead... because they love stoneflies.

Mark Bolivar I fish Eastern brook trout and landlocked salmon , no steelhead in my state. We also have browns and rainbows. Either way I not the watching someone else catch. I laugh at your secret fly reference. I have my share of preferred flies , someone asks I am likely to give them a few. Mostly fish the Northwoods and western part of our state. I would rather encourage others by sharing. Try it sometime, the joy on the face of another flyfishers learning something new and succeeding.
