All shows were magic, modernised with some Aussie and Kiwi humor , I have all of the traditional G&S operas but find these so funny Jon English RIP added that depthe along with all of the cast, the orchestration was also fun especially the banter between Jon and the conductor. For operas written well over 160 years ago they still endure. I usually as a morning thing wake up and recite anyone of the patter songs to get my brain out of its night fugue.Of course the reference to cricketings underarm went down with New Zealand audiences.
We did this in sixth grade (1966) and absolutely LOVED it! Our music teacher, Mrs. Sunderland, and English teacher, Mrs. Dyslan (sp, I think) were totally awesome and produced and incredible musical with some pretty untalented kids and one kick-ass singer, George Guinnino (I spelled that wrong, too). SILVERMINE SCHOOL, NORWALK, CT!)
How does this sound. Produce your own version of the play, and you can choose your own cast, and have a complete and professional orchestra. Until you do, good night to all, and to you, good luck.
Agreed. Although I'm not from Australia, I also don't understand why they couldn't simply adapt the score and modernize it without completely annihilating it.
That was fun - well performed by Ko-Ko - gee I miss Sullivan's orchestration - but this production really has some wonderful moments and other moment well, that aren't so perhaps. On the whole it is pretty fun - I just wish they'd done the music a bit straighter.
I have to say, I love G&S productions and even more, whenever Jon English is in them... I was raised watching Pirates of Penzance and have seen parts of EssGee's other G&S shows... However, their version of The Mikado isn't the best thing they have don't... I still enjoy it and want to see all of it ((in order would be nice too lol)) but it really isn't my fave thing to watch =)
when the LYTES did this in barnsley for the lamproom theatre we wrote our own version of the list and it was funnier. but i like the mikado unlike anybody else i know.
It doesn't make sense that it offends you because you didn't write the play, nor did you see the first ever performance of it. If the producers of this performance want to change it, they can, and they did. If you want "perfection", go back one and a half centuries and watch it there. But don't bother coming back. We'll have changed some more by the time you do.
Hmmm I forget the punishment for bad interpretation of G&S.. Boiling in oil comes into it somewere.. OR MELTED LEAD.. I know its lingering.. But humourious
I hope the Casio Keyboard got to take its bow at the end of the production. As it seems to perform the vast majority of the work. I don't mind if somebody wants to mix up G&S to a degree but at least make the effort in the orchestra pit.
I really dislike this degree of over-acting. His whole performance is twee. And the modern words inserted into this song are often inappropriate because they are directed at things other than PEOPLE. "American advertisements", rather than "Advertisers". The song can be very clever. But not here. The dilemmas that face this character are important to the plot, but the actor has failed to come to terms with them, or covey them to the audience.
this has to be the worst version of the Mikado. The person who plays pooh-bah over acts and tries to be in every scense. I like richard mcmillian's performance of the statsford festival better. Ko Ko is a bit too fenimine here for me, but he sings stellar.
